  • This is a quick test drive in a Mercedes Benz Unimog U1300L Ambulance. It shows how to start and stop a German Army Spec Unimog. It also shows what it is like to drive a Unimog on the road. This Unimog was going out to a customer and I wanted to give him a quick idea of what to expect. I thought I'd just share it it with everybody.

    Hi there! During my military service in the German Army I spent a lot of time on the right seat or, as a recruit, with seven comrades on the loading bed of that model. Thanks for bringing back memories. I like the sound very much.

    This reminds me of the time I got my truck licence when doing my reserve army training, way back in 1974 I got my licence in a New Zealand army RL Bedford, I would really love to h ave a RL as my 'car', keep safe and well everyone.

    Great to see a video from you, George! Similar to our Truck. I guess the Cab-overs have a different system as they won't let you turn the key off until the motor is off. Similar speed to ours also...57 when we got it and 62-3 now with 395's on it. Hope to see you in the DIY at the Expo this year!

    A bit late.. But the red light on the speedometer is there to warn the driver that he/she is nearing highest allowed speed for heavy vehicles. In Europe you’re not allowed to go any faster than 90kph in a heavy truck, if you’re hauling a trailer you’re only allowed to do 80. This differs some between different countries in Europe, but the upper limit is always 90kph. All vehicles with a total weight of 3500kg or more are subject to this speed limit, except for buses which, at least in Scandinavia, are able to do 100kph. A small question: do you use the tachograph behind the speedometer in the US?

    • @theunimogcenter
      @theunimogcenter  Před 2 lety +1

      Tachographs are not used in the USA. I just keep them blank. Yes the warning light is at 80kph for speed limit warnings in Europe. In the USA I can drive 100+kph on many highways if I want to;)

    • @1966cambo
      @1966cambo Před 2 lety

      I do not believe that is correct, Unimogs are not full time 4x4 as far as I know. They just don’t use locking/unlocking hubs like a regular old truck did, they have a full time hub setup but selectable 2 wheel drive/4 wheel drive…..

    • @theunimogcenter
      @theunimogcenter  Před 2 lety +3

      The U1300L is not fulltime 4x4. You are not always in 4x4. Normally you are in 2x4 rear wheel drive. Not sure where you are getting your info from. Clutch press depends on specific vehicle. Some have a clutch press safety, some don't - depends on the requirements for specific markets and uses.

    • @18Chriss88

      Yes thats correct they are normaly rear wheel drive even the Newest. There are some expetation. The biggest models are Standard 4 wheel drive. And thats only with the last gen and the actual gen. Greetings from Germany

      It's a speed warning light. It comes on if you are exceeding German speed limits for commercial trucks. Not an issue in the USA or most of the world.

      For the Unimogs with this cab there are three gearboxes:
      First One(~1979 to ~1989): UG3/40
      Second (~1990 to ~2002): UG3/65
      Third (~2002 to today): UG3/100
      All gears are the same, maybe not exactly, but you wont see any difference.
      Only ecaption is the 8th gear of the UG3/100, ist 26% (0,74i instead of 1,00i) faster than the 8th gear of the other two.
