      Thanks! The core gameplay for this was much easier than I imagined. Some of the edge cases where cards overlap with rules or other cards created a few questions along the way, but for the most part this was considerably easier than I imagined it would be for someone who doesn't have a lot of Civil War gaming experience. And speak of the devil, Enemy Action Ardennes is my Shelf of Shame game for April! :)

      @@ZillaBlitz great! I can't wait to see your play of EAA. I will say EAA seems complex, but once you get past the situational aspects of some of the gameplay, it's fairly logical and the whole chit-pull mechanic of combat is very interesting--as is the well thought out AI for great solo play. AMFS looks great and one thing it has is a kind of immersion aspect with the names of the commanders and leaders etc - It lends to a kind of "role play" that is very fun. I'm looking forward to actually doing a day or even the 3 day campaign... the question for me is always "when do I have time??"! Thanks, ZB!

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yeah, I thought as well that the Union would hold the top, but clearly both sides were exhausted by that point. :) Every scenario I've played has this sort of sweeping back and forth action to it. It's really fun.

  • @pterrok5495
    @pterrok5495 Před 3 měsíci +3

    Armchair General:
    I dunno, that Take Those Colors is a HOLD card, so charging up into the withering fire of BOTH Rebs seemed a bit...bad? I for sure would have held it to attack the Rebs if they managed to move up and sit on the Hill--as you'd have a good choice of who to do it.
    Then Seeing the Elephant, I woulda moved Ward NE so that if Robertson moves onto the Hill, there would be two Union hexes to give defensive fire.
    ~~~
    That said, those dice results are hard to understand--some horrible attacks yield an OPTIONAL Skedaddle which is ignored, then a piddly little (basically) even odds is a FORCED Skedaddle? Just the way it is, I guess...
    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před 3 měsíci +3
      Yep, I was thinking that a possible strategy could have been to hold both the Rebel Yell and Take Those Colors until the end, although the bonuses they confer can really punish defending units immediately. Lots of different ways to play this, I bet, and I make no claims at being a good player yet. :)
      Definitely some wide swings in combat results. I mean, more power and better cohesion will deliver better results on average, but a good attack can go awry, and a weak attack can pay handsomely. Combine that with the events on doubles and the event cards, and it's chaos all about. I love it. In the previous scenario I played a confederate cannon hit a Union ammo caisson, which decimated two batteries of Union artillery, panicked a union brigade, which sent them skedaddling into another Union brigade, which also panicked. Fun times! :)
      The CRT is built so that with Fire Combat, it is more likely that a unit will take damage but stand its ground, unless the player opts to withdraw them out of that position (with the optional Skedaddle). If you want to force the enemy from its position - i.e., get it to Skedaddle - that is more likely with Assault Combat. So essentially - firepower to soften up, bayonet to take the position. Thanks!
    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před 3 měsíci +1
      Yes, makes sense for sure. And even if things went sideways for the Confederates the Union forces wouldn’t have had an opportunity to move into the vacated hex. Although I wasn’t 100% sure what all the possibilities are for the Fog of War card that was coming up last.
      Thanks! I think the top is just rocky? There is a little splash of woods on the east side, but I think because the majority of the hex doesn't have woods that it's just a rocky hex. Not 100% sure here though.
      Makes sense, Patrick! That's actually one of the goals of the videos, is to help people make informed purchasing decisions, and not every game is for everyone. :)
      The only thing I'd add to this is that the larger scenarios with more artillery and larger force pools have a different feel to them than this small one. I contemplated recording a larger scenario, but then I would have had to cut out a lot of the details. In the end I decided to show a deeper playthrough of a small scenario instead of a superficial look at one of the larger scenarios.
    This is just my opinion on how your game finished, but I’m not so sure that is a Confederate “win”. I think that the terms of “victory” in that scenario need to be re-examined. Perhaps the terms of victory for the Confederates need to be “all victory hexes taken”; and for the Union “control of Little Round Top victory hexes”. Any other result seems to be, historically, a draw - because of the geography of Little Round Top, the units as they finish in this scenario could not still hold their positions. They would probably keep fighting until one or the other retreated or was destroyed. And yes, I realize the time factor involved but I still say that the Confederates still could not claim a “victory” as this scenario ended.
    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Před 3 měsíci
      I can definitely see your point. In my mind, with darkness approaching, I could see the side with lesser control conceding the position, but I can certainly imagine the fighting to continue as well. :)
      The scenario/game doesn’t show it, but the Union trains were located behind little round top. Opening the gap between big and little round tops created a clear move for Rebel forces to strike those trains.
      Edit: should probably point out that in the battle, the Union managed to just hold all of little round top and the low ground between the two hills (after a bold bayonet charge by the 20rh Maine).
    Hey Zilla, apologize for another comment, but...
    One thing about Gettysburg that frosts me a little is that this (Little Round Top) end of the battlefield seems to always be at the forefront, while what happened at the same time on Culp's Hill was just as, if not more, important. The 137th New York was holding the right flank of the Union line, and they did almost exactly the same thing that the 20th Maine did - including bending their line to meet an overwhelming Confederate force and a charge that held the Confederates from driving up the hill to the rear of the Union line. But... their Colonel, David Ireland, died during the Battle of Atlanta and unfortunately did not get to write a post-war memoir about the great things he did at Gettysburg. Even today the Battlefield Guides will tell you that what Ireland and the 137th NY did was extremely important to holding the Union line on July 2nd. I would love to see a wargame that covers the bloody battle at Culp's Hill.
