If you have a farm with animals, a gun IS required to defend from coyotes, wolves, ect.
No, no you can reason with them. Like women reasoning with bears for instance.
Yep. Every American farm has a shotgun and rifle. Likely a pistol too.
Exactly. Coyotes can be chased off with a couple well placed m80s, but anything bigger needs to be dealt with.
Maybe Mel's character was a pacifist Christian, like Desmond Doss in his film Hacksaw Ridge. :P
@@Sam-lm8gi Well, than he would still need a rifle to drag people away from the battlefield.
To quote Scary Movie 3: 'They've mastered interstellar space flight, but they can't figure out a wooden door?!'
Give a first gen phone to modern young people and see how many could figure it out while focus on chasing someone.
Is Gary Buechler an alien? hmmmmm.......
Do they have an opposable digit and a wrist that twists? If not it could be a challenge.
We have no idea how the aliens perceive things. Something like a door might not stand out as it does to us. We look at things and see whether or not we can use them. If not, we data dump 'em. Consider trees: you see them, but could you pick out one tree from a similar tree in a line-up? Honestly, you cant'---you don't see trees as any more than wood or objec-in-my-way. If I took pics of five trees of the same species and you'd be hard pressed to tell me which one was the one you drove by every day. Therefore: it may be how they perceive the world rather than assuming they think like us.
Well, all doors we see them struggling with are barricaded. It’s essentially a wall at that point. So I never really understand how fly a spaceship helps one get through a blocked door. But the movie does show that their smart, and will bang on things to keep you distracted while they find another way in.
That part when the alien walked out of the bush scared tf outta me when I was a kid.

Same here. The scene with the hand sliding underneath the door and trying to grab Graham… I remember me and the whole theater gasping, even SCREAMING at that moment. Ah memories 😅

Everybody makes fun of this movie, but I really liked it. I saw it as a teenager, long after I should be scared by horror movies, and I got genuinely scared watching this movie. That alien leg sticking out of the corn for half a second was nightmare fuel.
Just people jumping on the ban wagon to agree with other people. It's like people sh*tting on Nickelback like nobody likes them even though they've sold millions of albums.
I'm older but I grew up with the Nightmare, Chucky, anf Friday franchises so by the 90s I was pretty numb to the fear impact of horror movies, but the first Scream scared me. There was something super creepy to me with that cheap mask and that flowing black costume. Maybe it was because everything else I watched was supernatural but Scream could have been real.
I imitate the alien noises once in a while and my wife yells at me. She hates those noises, especially at night. 😄
Thats because people assumed the entity's where space Aliens, they would say "Why would a alien race come to a water world if they can be killed by it?" However a demon or evil entitie being killed by water makes more sence, especially the fact that the main character is Christian.
Yes same, it gets unfair criticism and I don't know why - it's very well done. It's subtle.

Agreed.
I think that depends. Sure yes no violence against other PEOPLE but predatory animals to keep your animals safe I think is fair game.
Misinformation. What makes you think pastor can't own guns? I mean, my pastor (one of several at the church) does. In fact we have plans to go shooting. We are commanded by God Almighty to protect our family. At times the Shepard must protect his flock from attacking wolves. Non-violence yes, everyone is called to love and respect the creation of the Lord, mankind. Thou shalt not kill. However, we are not meant to stand idly by and let atrocities happen. What we do we must do for the glory of God, if that means taking life to protect life, repent. I grew up on a farm, currently live on a farm, and a shotgun (or any gun) not being in the movie has always driven me nuts.
When I was a kid the quick shot of the one on the roof had me freaked out for so long. Walking my dog at night I’d be scanning all the rooftops nervous as hell lmao

Yeah movies never give me an actual physical response but that one scene did lol
It might have been inspired by the Murfreesborough incident back in the 50s.
Back in 1965 when I was a lad, I was out late one clear dark evening walking our dog, I came home along our long drive and went to go to the back door and by chance glanced up to see a black sillouette following me along the peak of the house.
My hair stood up on end for a second or two until our black pussy cat stopped and sat down and looked down at me. Never forgotten it. 🙂
Saw ‘Signs’ in the cinema when it first come out and I couldn’t get it out of my head for a good while afterwards.
It really freaked me out.
The tinfoil hat scene is one of my all time favorites.
The first half of it is very good at building dread and just showing you a bit but not enough of what is hunting the familly and invading the planet. Makes it very effective horror-wise. It just goes up it's asshole too much with bad writing and too many coincidences lol. Just makes the movie seem to convenient. Flowing water has been said to be uncrossible by certain entities as well. I believe vampires are one of those things, and if I recall right, there is even a scene in the last season that points to this. Only putting this out there because you triggered the memory, this is only a movie, after all.

The theory is correct and Signs is one of the best movies ever made. Two more things I would like to add: The Crop Circle was a sigil for opening the gate to the Abyss which allowed the demons in. There is a whole other aspect there going on as to who made the Sigil (consciously or unconsiously), and also the closeness of the family enhances their psychic interconnection amongst one another as they are a very loving and close family. This is a very powerful aspect in their survival. Even the brother - whom I suspect may have unconsiously made the crop circle as he was a depressed/despondent and easily manipulated person for a demonic walk-in. This was also shown in how the TV took complete control of him. Great review Dave.
@@nw4185 How are the demons supposed to know what's holy water and what's regular water? They may have an instinctual fear of water due to how easily the holy version can kill them. You're spot on mate 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👌🏽💯🙏🏾
While MOST farmers will have a gun to defend against coyotes/wolves/small game/etc., as Mel Gibson's character is a former priest, I think it was more of a choice of being a "man of God" and a "man of peace" that he didn't for personal reasons, not practical reasons.
Not to mention that a gun is usually needed for 2 reasons on a farm: to protect livestock from predators (their farm has no livestock). Or to protect from other people.
In either case, he has guard dogs that are clearly trained to attack intruders as they are implied at the beginning of the film to attack the aliens that were near the kids. Not only that but the only people that he deals with is seemingly some prankster hoodlums or whatever you call them, harmless nuisances that may not even be a consistent issue.
The movie shows that he relies on the police quite often, as he is friends with the cop that comes to his house. She also got there quick so she is probably familiar with getting there often. And on top of that, when he calls the police after seeing the crop circles he speaks as though he is seaking guidance and peace from a priest, even asking for closure so that he will be comforted. So he relies on the police as a higher power you could say.
His unwillingness to confront things and care about safety rather than stick his head in the sand is a consistent theme of his character, to the point that its the main reason his son prefers the brother. Him not having a gun makes more sense if anything.
Uhm, apples and oranges.. funny some yall think just owning a gun is evil, when really, not owning one and putting your family at risk is the true sin..
@@StayFractalesque None of that negates anything I said. I said it could be a character choice, not mine.
Never said guns are evil. But I've known people of faith who simply don't believe in guns. I've known people NOT of faith who don't believe in them either.
If the movie had good writing they could have included him going nuts at his brother about keeping a gun in the house. He could have made him get rid of it. They could have made his wife die by accident from a gun or something so gives him a reason to hate them. Would be a better coincidence than all the other bullshit in the movie. The movie is just badly written, I do enjoy it still though for what it is.
Where do people get this literally wildly insane idea that "men of god" dont own guns? The bible explicitly tells people to be armed and to take action to defend themselves. the only "Man of god" not owning guns, is one who cant read his own bible.
Brother, this has been my theory since the day I saw the movie. Love the fact that it is still being recognized. It indeed does make it a better movie with this understanding. Thank you for the video.

What an eye opener!
The thought of "why aren't there any firearms?" Never crossed my mind when watching signs till today.

That is a pretty awesome theory and makes a lot of sense. Another scene that comes to mind is the girl who encounters Mel Gibson's character in town later and proceeds to go through an impromptu confessional session of her wrong-doings with him, even though he's clearly disinterested, showing that as much as he thinks he's turned from his faith it's still something that people in town regard him for and that he can't manage to escape. That seems to follow the idea of all of these "prophecies" happening through the film that he's dismissive of, but ultimately culminate in the film's resolution once he accepts it all. Thanks for sharing this theory!
Wow way to over reach. "He also stares at the rooftop for an extended period of time. This indicates his nature in wanting to make sense of God and how his faith is yearning to be restored." Giberish ramblings of not even half baked ideas.
Swing away!
Love this film.
6th Sense, Signs, and The Village are all brilliant.
I truly adore The Village. Most people didn’t care for it, but i did.
I enjoyed Lady In The Water as well. The "twist" is more relatable as a lot of us think we are the leaders but in actuality, it is someone else who have been around us all the time yet doesnt push themselves to that role that is the actual leader. How many times in our lives have we thought we knew our roles to only be confronted that we were mistaken.
I think all of those movies are good. Lady In The Water suffered because the stupid studio branded it a "horror" movie when it was more of a fairytale. I also liked the Happening because nature doing that is very scary.
@@brockdavid I think it's becaused it was marketed as a Horror film, when it's really a love story. The scene where William Hurt is discussing letting Ivy go to the "towns" with the other elders is one of the best acted scenes I've ever seen. Criminally underrated film and I'm dying for a 4k transfer of it.
@@Ironica82 I enjoyed Lady in the Water, but it's kind of a mess, objectively. Giamatti's performance was incredible though.
Heard it before but you presented it very well, thank you
I totally have to thank you for posting this! Signs was one of my child hood movies that I would watch over and over, I always loved it. I go back to it from time to time as one does with one of their favorites aha Always had significance to me with the faith aspects as I grew up as a believer and recently being bolstered in faith and than seeing the connections in real life of aliens not actually being what they appear but are demonic..well watching this video talking about just that as the ACTUAL plot to one of my favorite movies of all just secures that even more for me. So thank you again for this ✌️
I'll never forget the feeling of fear I felt when it showed the alien on the roof. I watched the rest of the movie through my fingers 🖤
Very good theory. I enjoyed this topic. I’ve watched your channel before but now I subscribed.
You got me convinced. Great video.
Aliens are fallen angels
Looool
I do believe that was part of the theme here, and why MNS never directly stated or openly alluded to 'the aliens' being demons (and why little details like the news broadcast talking about The Middle East, are there).
Even Pagans, Hindi, and Asian Spiritualism/Mysticism all acknowledge 'dark, otherworldly and ancient entities' (Demons, Djinn, etc. to 'The West' and 'The Middle East).
"The 'signs' are there", in every long-standing culture/'mythology'.
Signs comes off as obtuse or utterly lacking but, I feel like 'what isn't there' had meaning.
@@Jeff.55649 Nothing funny about it.
Angels, in general. As no angel is from earth.
I had a nice detailed reply as to MNS's seemingly-purposeful lack of allusion one way or the other...
Apparently, I triggered the keyword filter, and it got censored. Oops.
Personally I always felt that at the exact moment his wife says the two lines tell him to see, and tell merril to swing away…that she had become a telephone from god. God was saying…before you go say this….
Facts
Especially since she says, "and tell Graham," to which he replies, "I'm right here." "Tell him to see." It's like it wasn't her anymore. It's like the Holy Spirit was talking TO her and she was repeating it back.
Gee, almost like the movie heavily implies this in the first place with its themes of no coincidences and there is someone watching us. You guys are all acting like it's deep subtext when it's surface level info the movie is hitting us over the head with during flashbacks in the climax.
I'm insane with anger 😆 gets me every time.
Awesome theory! I love all of the little details.
They didn't need a shotgun, they had Merril swingin away!
Love that they could be demons! Change it to demons instead of a aliens makes the movie so much better
Agreed. It also helps explain why when i see it for the first time on tv in Mexico city it chills me deeper than fear.
Not really. Then you've gotta deal with the supernatural element and it's a completely different movie from the middle on.
@@bennygerowisn’t there already a supernatural element that “someone’s looking out for you and everything happens for a reason?”
I lived on an American farm and we had enough firearms to outfit an infantry company. There were gun racks in most high school kids trucks lAlso, zero murders in county for several years in a row. It’s almost as if firearms don’t cause violence.
A disarmed society is a vulnerable society. Murders will happen no matter firewarm bans or not but it negatively affects everyone else. A Psycho killer will think twice if he wants to cause harm in a state where every single person has a gun on themselves.
@@joebenzz this is basic common sense.
Guessing your county suffers from an appalling lack of diversity?
They’ll replace the guns with cars using cgi nowadays
Loved the part where arthur fleck freaked out at the TV when he saw that alien come outta the bushes in mexico
Wow, this was one of my favorite films too, and I would say my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie. I am a Catholic. This was the first time I heard of this theory and it blew my mind. It makes total sense. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Signs is all about chance, circumstance, fate, faith, and belief. There are many different layers to it. I haven't seen it in a while, so if I had to, I would have to watch it a couple of times to re-familiarize myself with it. But it's brilliant. Much more than being about aliens.
Thank you! I've been saying this since it came out and for decades people told me I'm nuts😂
The director/writer of Signs himself has stated the creatures were alien in origin
The movie where a character needed a premonition to know attacking a hostile alien with a weapon is a good idea
This theory gave me chills! Good video 🙋🏻♂️
Wow - I love this theory. I'm on board with it. It's a spiritual story...not an alien invasion story.
It always was a spiritual story.
Depends on who “aliens” (strangers) really are.
It's an alien movie on the surface, but a spiritual movie underneath.
The aliens are basically stand-ins for demons.
Aliens are demons anyway
it's both because the water was contaminated the daughter even say the water taste funny and old so germs hurt the alien when the water fell on it
and you can say it's holy water and these are demons and not aliens
The “aliens” being demons is most definitely the intended interpretation. It’s the only way the movie truly works. The movie has absolutely nothing to do with an “alien invasion”. All the…signs 😏 …are there from the beginning. Everything from crop circles to holy water. It’s all there. Such a great movie.
I watched this movie as a teenager for the first time with my best friend. We were watching it in his basement during a terrible storm outside. Just as you see the demon on the rooftop for the first time, there was a huge crack of thunder and the power went out 😂 Yeah…we shit our pants 😂
No, it's not the intended interpretation. The director of _Signs_ has stated the creatures were aliens from outer space
Really cool. Makes a whole lot of sense. A whole lot.
Great video!
I just watched this 3 days ago! This is the second time you have reviewed a movie I watched about the same time. Scary!
Is it,,… a SIGN?!?? 😨
Most farmers not only have a shotgun, but are pretty well armed with a variety of firearms.
I am not a farmer and I’m very well armed.
Great video and theory. Makes me want to watch the movie again from that perspective!
Doesn't a bird crash into something invisible in the sky?
I thought so. Pretty sure someone mentions that but I have to watch the movie again now.
Yes
Yes, but you never see what. The demons can camouflage, so why couldn’t flying demons do the same.
The poster for the movie in the video gives off a “hellscape”vibe…like this theory a lot
I watched this movie so many times growing up that I never knew it was supposed to be scary/unsettling
Your explanation makes complete sense. This changes the movie entirely and makes it good now. I wish I'd picked up on this. Thanks for the video.
I have been telling people for Decades that Signs is an amazing movie... They just expected something else.
It's been well received in general and the demon theory makes it worse despite all the half baked ideas people make up in their heads to support it.
If Satan can whisk the creator of all from the middle of the wilderness to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem, then conjuring up a fleet of UFO or space aliens out of thin air can't be a stretch.
Well, Satan \ Lucifer is an fallen cherubim, very powerful entity, basically can do almost of the miracles that Jesus did , and also made the Giants , and I think even dinosaurs \ dragons , Dna manipulation , at Noah event everything was corrupted. And miracles like Moses and the servants of the pharaoh with the snakes transforming into a staff... Matter manipulation....same as Jesus with water into wine .
So Satan has retain he's powers after the fall ... Scary
Very true. Many Christians don't like to think about the power and hold the evil one has on this world.
Jesus did not create the universe Dude. Don't listen to Priests, read your Bible.
@@Willy_TepesFirst chapter of John. Read it. Tell me what it says about Christ. Also, read Genesis. Read the section where Abraham greets both God on earth and refers to the God in heaven. Christ and God are one.
@@Willy_TepesThere is no universe. Heaven is above us. And Jesus is the cornerstone of creation.
nice! i love this theory. i gotta watch it again.
