I knew him in 1984 and he was a genuine, loving guy. He protected me and was a big brother to me. I will always love him.

This is my favorite player, all time! He was traded to San Diego because our Saints coaches did not have the 'people skills' to reach him. Few did in those days. While Dick Nolan was busy trying to force Dallas' "flex defense" on our guys, Muncie fell in with an offensive genius and players in San Diego more suited to his success ... not to mention returning to Ca. where he was a college hero. He was not a bitter man at heart. Smart, graceful, kind and tough ... one of a kind never forgotten.

Bronco fan here. OLD Bronco fan who doesn't hate and is a fan of the old AFL teams and the AFC West. I also loved your 81 Bolts, and looked forward to watching Denver try to beat them. They were among the best and Chuck Muncie was a huge part of that. Condolences to you and the rest of the Charger Nation. God bless and good luck in 2013.

I remember watching him play when I was a kid. He was a freight train! I wish I could have met him. Rest In Peace Chuck.

Another one of those guys that we don’t talk about enough. As good as any back that ever came through the league.

Chuck Muncie helped to beat my Steelers in the 1982 playoffs. Respect to Muncie for his outlook in helping others. He did get a raw deal at the time.

I moved to San Diego in Jan of 91 pretty much on a whim. When I arrived my Boston teams Celts and Bruins had their games during the day. I would head over to this sports bar mid-day to watch the games. Place was nearly empty with the exception of a few bar flies. The bartender was really cool, talked about sports and such.. It was so empty that he and I would play pool together. For a month this went on, playing pool, drinking beer and watching sports. One day, bellied up to the bar, I'm sitting with this lady next to me (said bar fly) when the bartender and I were taking jabs at each other on how we were going to take each other to task on the pool table.. She says, you'll never beat Chuck, I said I beat him all the time.. She says, do you know who he is? I said ya, Chuck!? She says, this is Chuck Muncie the former San Diego football player. Being young and from Boston, I hardly knew any players outside of New England. Chuck never mentioned he played sports.. but given his stature it was easy to believe.
Chuck left that bar, but we ran into each other frequently - We played a few rounds of golf together at Tecolote Canyon, one night I ran into him on a booze cruise in the San Diego harbor - what a night! I don't know how to explain it, but Chuck was so kind, so humble, very funny and had a fantastic smile that would make you instantly feel good about life. You've got to understand, I am the epitome of a white guy, blond hair, blue eyes with a fortunate background and so much opportunity ahead of me.. Chuck clearly a black man with a tough upbringing and a tough journey through fame and fortune. And how does this guy react to me? He embraced me with love and kindness. I learned a lot about Chuck and how he gave back so much to the community and although his journey was a challenging one he made the very best of the twists and turns.
I'm so thankful I met a truly great person who just happened to have played football.
RIP my friend.. Eight ball, Corner pocket, no rail.

Had Chuck had the work ethic of other runners, he'd have easily been the all time best running back in Charger History. Unfortunately that was not the case, yet still a stellar running back/career. I enjoyed watching him in college at Cal then onto New Orleans and then when he became a Charger (Go Chargers)! RIP Chuck, you were the man!

Chuck Munchie was a tremendous running back. I think he finished 3rd in Heisman to Archie Gwiffin & Tony Dorchett in 1975.

This is a classic example of.. never take what God gave you for granted because it can be gone in a second.
When I was a kid I always appreciated Chucks ability to run by, around and through and over defenders. If he had recognized that flaw.. he would have been one of the best

Yeah, I swear, he was carrying the football in one hand and pushing his glasses up with the other as he'd make that cut upfield. We used to laugh like hell when we were little kids cause he looked funny, but he was bad, though.
