SLWoA 4 St Enda's Monastery

In this video, I bring you through the site of St Enda's main monastery on Árainn. The area is called Killeany, or Cill Éinne in Gaelic, meaning the hermit cell of St Enda. A Viking attack in the 9th century destroyed the monastery, and later the buildings were dismantled to provide stones for the construction of Arkyne's Castle, a Cromwellian fort nearby. However, there are still plenty of marks on the landscape from the time of the monastery, and this is what I want to walk you through.

How many times over the years I’ve walked and cycled past there and all I saw was the tower and small church. Thanks Dara for that enlightening and fascinating tour. I’ll be there again in August and will make sure to follow your footsteps from the sea to the tower and Church and everything in between! Grma. Paul
