How to Disassemble and Maintain a Fat PS3

  • This is the process I perform on every FAT PlayStation 3 before I do anything else!
The 19 blade fan isn't absolutely necessary, but I highly recommend installing one. They can be found on ebay for ~$20.
The spray I'm using to clean with is 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, and I used some DeoxIT on that bit of corrosion I found on the edge of the board.
This is not the same 2032 battery socket I used in the video, but this looks like a good fit for this mod because it has pads for wiring the connector to: amzn.to/3ia0a6Q
    DeoxIT Contact Cleaner - amzn.to/35Pzal5
    Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste - amzn.to/2MpnIoy
    Largest HDD for PS3 - amzn.to/34OqzNZ
Things I use all the time:
    iFixit toolkit - amzn.to/2ZiyjXw
    Soldering Iron - amzn.to/38Y61G6
    Solder - amzn.to/34HUl7a
Soldering iron tip cleaner - amzn.to/2EJniov
    Flux - amzn.to/35Pe7ir
    Solder sucker - amzn.to/2PPp8up
    Silicone Wire - amzn.to/35QoLWa
    Auto Wire Strippers - amzn.to/2MnnIFn
    Flush Cutters - amzn.to/394s265
    99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol Aerosol - amzn.to/2Mo1vqG
    Multimeter - amzn.to/2s44Y7b

This video truly inspired me to make the Ultimate PS3 from my still working CECHA01. I plan to dust out the internals, replace the token capacitors, de-lid the CPU and GPU; applying arctic silver above and under, install a 1.5 terabyte drive, install a 19 blade fan, replace the power supply with an APS-226. And do all of this in an environment that is completely free of electrostatic discharge. I have one broken ps3 (I got at a garage sale) that I can practice the operation on. I have zero experience whatsoever with any of this, so I’ll spend the next month reading every applicable forum and guide I can find. Wish me good luck guys. P.s. Love the Bloodsport addition :)
Update: The Ultimate PS3 will be realized on December 31, 2021. Final preparations are being made. I’m transferring all my PS1 and PS2 memory card save data through an adapter.

I wish I had that PS3 model. I’ve been looking for a good deal on one. I want it to be my main PS3 so I can play my PS2 games on it. And I would pay someone to fix it up and have it running good as new. I don’t trust myself with that stuff as much.
My slim model from 2009 has started to not read 5% of discs so far. Mainly my copy of Stranglehold. Which will never get remastered. PS5 won’t be backwards compatible with PS3 and below so I want to do that.

Yet another totally superbly presented video, a complete contrast in presentation to the Gamecube/Xeno install video which itself was unbelievably good, this one has brilliant music and as others have pointed out, it complements the video perfectly. I have one of these beasts, I bought it brand new many years ago, it always ran like a dream, never a hitch and it still has the original firmware, I put it back in it's original packaging when I bought the PS4. I loved the first 3 Playstations, but the PS4 was a bit of a disappointment, to me at least, apart from the PS3 game reproductions like Uncharted. Your such an inspiration man, I really want to get it back out and try it again, but after 5 years or more sat in it's box - I don't know whether it'd be OK, but whatever, excellent video, that's the second one I have watched and I look forward to seeing the rest, many thanks.

I remember my first time disassembling and attempting to clean out my PlayStation. I was legit terrified because it was only me in my room trying to teach myself how to do everything properly. Plus at the time, i didn't understand that the heatsink needed to be cleaned out alongside the fan. Now about 5-6 years later, it's a piece of cake disassembling the PS3, PS4, and PS5 to clean them out. All it takes is a little knowledge, patience, and confidence to get the job done efficiently.

I had the 80 gig CECHE01 give me the Yellow light of death a year ago. I attempted repairing it twice, but with no luck. It I think already had it before I got it, because I saw the warranty sticker was not on it when I got it. It would use to get loud, and shut off a bunch, and then one day when it did shut off, I saw the light turn Yellow just before it did. Now I got a CECHG01 model (non-backwards compatible) fat. So far, I'm pretty impressed by it. It's super quiet, and doesn't make much noise. I got it sitting out in a well ventilated area with nothing in it's surroundings to block air flow, I got it lifted on little wood blocks to keep the fan off the surface it's sitting on (since it's located underneath the console) and I got a small mini fan coming that I may have blow cool air into the side vents just to keep cool air flowing through it. It's barely been used by the previous owner, and it was made in November 2007. Never been tampered or messed with inside.

Loved the video man! Been there done all of that... Quite the process but oh so worth it. Got any tips on fixing the YLOD? I originally took it apart to melt the solder joints with a heat gun. It was a $20 CECHA 01 that originally had the YLOD (Fully backwards compatible). To my amazement, it worked for about a year. I went to turn it back on...and nothing :/ It's ashame because it's fully modified and even has Linux on it!

I'ver found it's either needing a re-balling or reflow of the solder under the GPU or the NEC/TOKIN caps around or under the GPU. No way to know for sure unless you hook it up to a SYSCON or find out the hard way!

I love how those warranty stickers peel off clean 😂 at this point my suspicion is that every PlayStation has been broken into

Very impressive video, thanks for doing it. At the moment I only want to change the RTC battery, but I think I might do the full refurb on mine eventually. Mine is slightly less complex than the one you show in the video. It only has two USB ports on the front, and no card reader. Quick question: Do you often find corrosion, like you did on this one, or had this one been stored in a damp environment? Thanks again!

Cool vid bruh. If I could offer some advise it would be to wear gloves when handling any consoles EM shielding. Cheap metal and fingy prints turning into corrosion prints. It takes many years, but it happens. See it all the time in NES/SNES/N64 era consoles. Cheers.

How much does this help by the way? I have one of these and is wondering does it help with the yellow light? Also, can you see game improvement?

This video shows that the original ps3 models are reliable, you just need to look after them very carefully. Lots of people say these models are unreliable but the systems were net looked after well enough

Anything can be reliable if you look after it a lot, for something to be reliable you shouldn't have to look at it a lot, so you can RELY on it

@@sylamy7457 this is the case in a xbox 360 fat that I have, its just turned 12 years old and it works flawlessly, but I do take very good care of it.

Great vid. What fan did you replace it with? I like to attempt this with one i just got.

I used the 19 blade fan. They were standard parts on the Launch models. You'll have to open it up and see what yours has. You can find the 19 blade fans on ebay.

Would you also recommend upgrading the psu to one from a newer model that runs cooler. Do you know the model number? Thanks

The ps3 needs a little more thermal paste than the normal amount shown in the video since it generates mate heat quickly. But that amount is fine since to much thermal paste is bad because you don’t want the thermal paste to absorb all the heat instead of the heat sink.

    • @RETROCUTION
      @RETROCUTION  Před 4 lety +2

Yes, you're right. These chips do need a good amount of paste. The amount looks smaller in the video than it really was. I also recommend doing the X technique or spreading it to make sure you get a good spread on these PS3s.

  • @michaelthebarbarian3380

The Screw you put in at 12:12 is wrong. That get's a long screw through the top cover of the console. Fantastic VIDEO though! I just redid mine!
