  • In this video I’ll be going through my 6-8 week running training plain to run sub 88 minutes. The Farnborough Half Marathon is on the 22nd January 2023. Follow my journey on the ups and downs as a runner, hopefully smashing my PB for the Half Marathon.

This is a sensible plan, short and to the point. I will be following Chris!! You got this

I am an older Runner also, will be 70 years old in February and also training for my first Half Marathon Race. I 'm more of a Mid Distance Runner 5K -!0K. Strength workouts are a must to keep injuries abbey! I took on a 12-week plan, needed more of a 4-week of easy run Base buildup of mileage. I think as long as you incorporate Strength workout, Intervals, Tempos and a Long Run weekly, you will be successful. The most thing I discovered is that you feel recovered from week to week. My base build up was between 40 -50 miles and peaked out a week of 60 miles. Then decreased my mileage to 30 miles when I started doing Intervals, Tempo and Long Run. The Interval and Tempo run are done with not more than 8% - 10 % of weekly mileage!

Amazing👊 I’m like you and definitely prefer the shorter distances. Every time I’ve run a half marathon things go well for approx 8- 10 miles and I’m bang on pace…then the wheels start to fall off.

Yea, there's a fine line in racing and knowing what your race running pace is!

Seems to be a plan very personal to you Chris. Personally I would use the first two weeks as a slight build phase and last two weeks as a gente taper .with the middle two weeks as two good strong heavier mileage weeks. I would probably have speed and strength on the same day mid-week and then use park run (without racing)with the run thereand back as a medium length run the day before your longest run of the week. But you need to do what works for you. Anyway, good luck with your training

Thanks for your feedback Kathy, appreciate it. It’s a difficult one for me to train for with such short time. But there’s only one way to find out of it works 🤞

What kind of mileage do you manage? Your HM goal based on your 5k/10k times should be achievable purely by upping your mileage. I upped mine from high 20s to mid 30s and managed a 1:19:25 for my first HM (also not a spring chicken at 41). My long runs are normally 10-12 miles, and have only ran further that a HM once (14 miles). We’re all different of course, but your goal is easily achievable with just more mileage IMO. Only potential issue I’ve noticed is a probable overstride, but sounds like you work on form.

Thanks for your feedback, appreciate it. Yes definitely need to work on my form and also stop the rocking from side to side

I think if your body is responding well after the first 2-3 weeks, I'd be tempted to put some race pace training in to the Tuesday runs. Mile on/off, x2 2-3 miles at race pace etc. For the Parkrun you could pace a group at the speed you want to run at, which would help you from going too quick. Good luck!

Great idea for the parkrun Steven. Definitely something I will consider for the Tuesday run. 🤞 my body responds well. Can’t say I’m looking forward to training in the 🥶

If I understand correctly you're going to do 10+ mile runs of Tuesday, Thurs, Sun at VDOT easy pace. And something around Threshold or speed at parkrun. I' say "no" to you breaking 1hr28. Good luck - I hope you prove me wrong.
