    This is so helpful Rebecca, I am a care giver to senior citizen, I prefer to refer to myself as their “personal assistant” it sounds fancy and less dependent. My main client lives in a senior apartment complex with lots of other ladies and a handful of eligible bachelors, I was asked to speak next week, and I have been trying to figure out what to talk about, personal safety, avoiding scams, and now I can share this information and recommend the video to the ones that know how CZcams works! Most are on tight fixed incomes, I can go thru your list and make a shopping list, they do go to Dollar Tree a couple of times a month, this will really bless them!

    I think DT is better for single people. If you're just one person buying in bulk doesn't make sense, especially if there's no room for larger items.

      @norfolk03 She's addressed that. The $7 items will be in the freezer plus section, which is currently $3-5. Some $1.25 are going up to $1.50. Some may be actually coming back down to $1. Sounds more like a Dollar General style pricing, but with most items still being in $1 to $1.50 range.

      First of all, are you single ? Do you shop at DT yourself ?
      I am a single person and do not buy in bulk nor do I purchase everythingfrom DT. . I am frugal. And sometimes buying a one serving meal or at DT is not the best bang for my buck. Still there are times when it is the best solution
      I am not a fan of cooking rice. Please do not waste your breath giving me cooking tips - I wont do it. Instead, I like the microwaveable Rice packages from DT. Quick and easy and that which is considered one portion, [ CHECK THE BAG ], can for me be 3-6 portions depending on what I make - side dish, soup, stirfry, casserole. So, the expense is worth it to me.
      Spices, Bagels, Coffee, frozen Pizza, frozen Chicken Tenders, Tea all make sense to buy for a single person or a family. 4 Bagels in a package come to $.31/.32, and a cup of coffee instant $.03-5.
      However, the cereals, energy bars, chips, sodas, and water are way too high.
      So, even as a single person sometimes it is best to purchase larger size packages and freeze the extras.

So after the first day, I went to Dollar Tree and loaded up on snacks and canned ice coffee from there. I got canned coffee, popcorn, pistachios, pecans and milk chocolate covered pretzels. It was so much cheaper and I got some healthier options this way.

      When traveling, I can always find a dollar tree in the area and that’s where I get majority of my food for the trip. A lot of it is hotel friendly and it’s saves sooooo much money. I like to go to hotels with free breakfast to get in some variety and squirrel away a couple yogurts or fruits for the day and then make some rice and tuna bowls in the room for lunch.
      I definitely take advantage of hotels with free all day coffee and doctor it up to taste a bit better 😅

      Not all stores in an area are equal. While Dollar Tree pricing is consistent, availability may not be. Other stores, pricing and availability both can change from one zip code to another.
      Lists like this are a great starting point to be able to fine tune the data for your area.

    Can I just commend you on your dedication?! I know this had to be a LOT of work on top of holding down a regular job. The thing is this is useful for everyone no matter their situation. I live pretty equidistant between Walmart and other grocery and dollar stores, so it's not such a chore for me to stop in different places whenever I need just a few items, so it's good to know if I need a jar of mayo to get it from DT instead of Walmart, but also someone living in a rural area where you really only make one or two big grocery shopping trips a month also benefits because they can plan and strategize where to go and how much to spend at each store. I know we all say this a lot, but you are truly doing good work here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being so kind and empathetic for people who are struggling to afford food. Also, sort of related, but I was wondering about maybe branching out a bit from just food to household items like cleaning supplies and toiletries? Those items can also eat into a tight budget.

    Hi Rebecca!! I absolutely loved this video, as I constantly break down price by oz for items at Dollar Tree, Dollar General, my local grocery store and BJ's. Unfortunately, I live in NYC and the only walmarts we have are in the rural areas of NY. Hours away by car (which I don't have). As an autistic person, saving money by crunching numbers and getting the "better buy" has been a special interest of mine for some time now, and I find your videos to be extremely helpful for creative budget meals.
    I have a video request if you think it's possible! I have problems with eating the same thing everyday, unless it's one of my safe foods (again, autism), so meal planning had never worked out for me personally. BUT I would love to see you create a menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner for 2 weeks from Dollar Tree and Dollar General with at least amount of repeated meals back to back as possible. What I mean is, maybe make smaller portion sizes so there's not much leftovers, or space them out to not eat the same thing back to back. I know you've sort of already done this but if you aim for 2 weeks we can see a wider variety of meals! Since it's two weeks, I think a $50 or even $75 budget would give you a bit more wiggle room. I'd love to see something like this because my family likes to shop at BJ's in bulk but I think it's more reasonable to shop at Dollar Tree or Dollar General to save money as we are on a really tight budget.
    I apologize for such a long message, but your recipes have changed my life and allowed me to actually eat nutritiously on a budget, and I would really appreciate being able to expand on that. Thank you so much for the effort you put into your channel!! 💜

    Hey, Rebecca! Another great video with lots of great info. In full disclosure I'm an ASM with Dollar Tree but also a budget shopper that compares prices weekly and also buys at Walmart when the price is right. So I have a few points to add that I hope you and others will find helpful. To be clear, I am not representing the company in any way with this comment only adding my personal opinion and experiences. As far as the canned fruits go, your store may not have them yet, but ours has recently received others that were in either light syrup or even 'no sugar added' (mandarin oranges). So there may be options alternative to 'heavy syrup' arriving soon. Other things to watch out for at Dollar Tree are Limited Edition close out cereals. This happens infrequently and usually close to holidays but it is possible to get family sized boxes of brand cereals for $1.25 when you can find them. As an example, one of the last ones we received at our store was Reese's Puff minis in a family sized box (19.8 oz, if I remember correctly) and Walmart had the same exact box for $4.86. Standard coffee filters, brown bags, and small boxes of storage or snack bags may be a better value at Dollar Tree if you pack lunches or snacks. One thing I absolutely buy at Walmart is Toaster Pastries. At one point Dollar Tree had 8 ct boxes that beat Walmart's price; however, they have since shrunk to 6 cts for $1.25. Walmart has 6 ct boxes of the same flavors for $0.98 but also 12 ct boxes for $1.92. It would cost me $2.50 at Dollar Tree to achieve the same count. That's all I can think of right now. I really enjoy your videos and perspective since we have similar cooking styles and interests. Hope you have a great week!

    Dollar Tree is great for vacation cooking.
    We go shopping after we get to our villa and see what is available. Then we go to Sam’s for fruit, salad, and snacks, Walmart for variety and basics, and Dollar Tree for condiments because you can get smaller quantities.
    For a 10 day vacation, we usually eat 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 3-4 dinners at the villa or pack for picnics. We started doing this after seeing how you eat at ComicCons. Before that we ate out every meal and stayed in regular rooms.
    We save $$$$$$ doing it this way, eat better, and have more room in a villa.
    I know you prepare meals before you leave for Cons. But I find I have more car room and have less stress if we shop once we are there. Part of the fun is planning our villa meals together and picking out fun treats instead of $$$$ treats at amusement parks. We travel for fun instead of work so it works for us.

    Blue diamond almond breeze shelf stable milk $4.34 for 32 oz.
    What really love is the shelf stable table cream sold at Walmart in the international isle. Nestle Media Crema Table Cream, 7.6 oz for $2.32. It's great to have heavy cream on the shelf when I want to make a chowder.

    One thing about walmart canned vegetables/fruits is you have to weigh the actual fruit/vegetables from the container. It's not as much of a savings as you'd think because the Great Value brand tends to have less weight of actual food in the cans.

    • @lalalapurdue
      @lalalapurdue Před 4 měsíci

      thats why she looks at the ounces in the container ! they exclude the weight of the metal.

      @sarahstarbell Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@lalalapurdue I'm talking about the weight of the actual food in the can versus the entire weight of the can (basically the amount of water in each can/brand)...walmart/great value typically has more water compared to fruit/vegetables.

Sometimes people just dont realise that it can be cheaper overall for the larger size elsewhere but if you have $1.25 to spend then thats what you have to spend. I know what its like to scrape up enough cents to buy bread, buying in the larger sizes was a luxury I didnt have.

    Thank you for taking the time to do this. Based on the information you provided, it looks like Walmart is the best fit for me... which is good, because that's what I've been doing. (But now I can be SURE, rather than wondering.)
    Another thing I've done in the past might be helpful for people who have two grocery stores close to each other (or at least along a particular route) that offer pickup. I open a browser tab for each store, and search for the items I want. Whichever store has it cheaper, I put it in the cart. Then I stagger the pickup times so I get one right after the other. That way, you can do comparison shopping on the fly without having to go in-store.
