- In this video, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. I'll be unboxing the Art for Joy Sake palette by CZcamsr Kristy Rice of Paintcrush and sharing my first impressions. And some of these colors kind of scare me so it's going to be quite a ride. So grab your favorite beverage and join me as I dive right in and see what all the fuss is about. ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I love the flower pattern on the palette and your artwork is amazing! I am a bit aprehensive about the colours, though. Red flags for me are: no pigment or lightfastness information, plus chalky washes (an indication of fillers). Neon colours are very fugitive. If the only yellow is fugitive, all the mixes producing oranges or greens might fade over time. For a 12 colour palette, I miss having the trusted combo of a cool/warm combo of primaries, maybe a phtalo green or a dioxazine purple and a couple of earth colours. This seems to be a "white label" palette made in China by Phoenix or Superior (who make palettes for Arteza, and others), so I will be staying away. Thanks for the review, which helped me make up my mind -and for the beautiful ballerinas!
I totally understand your concerns especially with so many white label palettes out there! Let me clarify a few points, I hope this is okay Margot, if not please delete XO.
My palette is a custom formulation I worked with my manufacturer on for the better part of two years, so you won't be finding these colors anywhere else. I do share the pigment numbers used in making this palette on the Amazon listing in the q&a section plus an extensive community post from June of 2022. Future inventory shipments to Amazon will include a card inside to include this info.
One of the main intentional features of my palette is it's variety of watercolor personalities represented including opaque watercolor. So the opacity you are seeing is not a result of fillers but the inclusion of white pigment in some of the color formulations.
In terms of lightfastness, you are correct and as such I do make a regular point of discussing how I protect my own work
Thank you for this clarification Kristy and I think that’s a good idea about including that info in the pamphlet or packaging in the future as it is a legitimate concern as @gardenia fair mentioned. I’m pinning this since I think many viewers would find this info useful. 👍
Ps. In terms of lightfastness concerns, I scan and digitize all my artwork so very rare is it for a piece to be hanging out on my wall. However, for artists creating commissions or originals to sell commercially, I would recommend doing your own lightfast testing and/or default to pigments and formulations that are guaranteed ASTM "LFI" rated
@@KristyRice But why wasn't this information disclosed in the box / on paint wrappers / pan sides (as is the norm for artist quality paints) in the first place, Kristy? A community post doesn't always show up on the home page, and a lot of folk don't even know that community posts exist! It isn't on your webpage, either.
Also, how many folk read the Q&A section (or even the reviews - which can't always be trusted anyway) of an Amazon listing , when they've seen you / others on CZcams talking about it?
Apologies if this reads 'off', but it's a genuine question for me, and I think for many others, and what I've written isn't intended to be insulting, angry, or anything else negative.

Oh Margot! I love to follow you and Kristy was the first one I discovered on CZcams that made me feel like I could do this water color thing because of her relaxed manner! I watched a video that she asked if anyone needed art supplies and so to my recent retirement I said I did with no expectations- well low and behold her team sent me that pallet along with brushes and paper! It truly has changed me and what I create! I just wanted you to k ow that little story of generosity she has! Also I’m so happy to follow you and learn so much! 😊
So interesting how that neon colour 'Fearless' struck so much fear in me too! It really shows the classic human conundrum of overthinking/meta-cognition & rapidly trying to assess and make judgements about the unknown, when really...it's just a colour...it's not a medium for failure or an exposé of our insecurities, it's just a colour 💛
How beautifully said. You seem to have a wonderful sense of self awareness and introspection as an artist. You’re right! It’s just a color. What are we so scared of? Cheers to shedding the fear of the unknown 😉

I have a very neurotic, biologist mind that automatically goes to that overthinking place. However, I'm learning to really reign it in and challenge it in "enjoyment" activities like art, piano, and ballet!
@@Madeline96 That makes me so happy to hear! I tend to overthink things too and while there's definitely time to think and analyze things, much can be said for allowing your instincts and reflexes to take over too!
It’s actually what sold me on this pallet. After seeing Kristy use it, I put it on wish list and was soon able to work in my budget. So glad I did!
Those last four colors, Punchy, Flow, Blossom and Growth, the way you have them blended together -- it's like The Hungry Caterpillar bumped into Picasso the Green Tree Frog!

Thank you for this review! I always like to see artist curated paint sets. I see a lot of gouache characteristics as you were able to paint your ballerinas over the background. There are only 4-5 colors that intrigue me but still it looks like a nice range. Kristy is a fabulous artist and really promotes " Art for Joy's Sake"
I definitely concur that there are some gouachey aspects to the formulations to some of these colors. Definitely worth trying out though and given the price, it’s a great value for what you’re getting 👍

I bought this palette about a month ago. I was also hesitant because the colors were so different from what I'm used to. I LOVE it, and I've had so much fun mixing even more gorgeous colors! The neon yellow mixes beautifully with all of the other colors. The way you did the swatching, and hearing your excitement, made me even happier that I finally bought this palette! Oh wow that’s a gorgeous ballet 🩰 painting at the end. I love 💕 how colorful the curtains are for the background of the painting. Definitely a great set of Kristy’s colors. I have been curious about this set too. It took me a while to figure out how the ring on the bottom of the palettes worked too. I find that slipping my finger instead of my thumb is definitely more comfortable with holding on to the palette while painting outside. that's an interesting colour combination. I like it though. I have a soft spot for curated palettes because the maker often already had certain harmonies in mind, which can help getting some diversity in my pieces instead of always relying on the same paints and mixes.
I am not the big fan of the brown...but it could be useful in mixing.
I guess some of them might not be lightfast, but most of my water colour pieces are in a sketchbook with minimal light exposure so I am less worried about that. tbh. lightfastness is only really important to me if I am giving the painting away.

With the ring on the back, I believe you can use it like a Popsocket and thread your finger through it to have a better grip on it if you are painting outside. That is my interpretation on it.
The ring is to put your thumb through….so you can hold onto it when painting.

This is perfect palette for sketchbook work and studies and for fun. Yeah it’s not lightfast but tbh most people looking to by palettes from Amazon that aren’t name brand aren’t going to hanging their stuff in a museum. Its for sketchbooks or friend and family. I don’t like how every single person is so hung up on lightfast test results for Amazon palettes. If you’re an artist selling your work then yeah but you already know which brands can be trusted. Otherwise you really don’t need to be worried about it.

The loop is to slip one or two of your fingers through so you can hold it in your hand without having to grip it. Think about the traditional wooden pallet with a thumb hole. It's kind of like that. It will save your hands if you are someone that likes to hold your pallet while you paint.

Pretty sure the ring is intended to put your finger through if you're holding your palette with one hand and painting in the other. I honestly have no idea but that's my guess
The ring is for plein air painting. When outdoors, it is assumed the availability of table tops is limited. You hook a finger (or thumb) into the ring and paint from your outstretched hand.
i'm glad you enjoyed her pallet! i don't have it (and my painting style is radically different from hers) but i love watching her use it and i enjoyed watching you use your style with it. yes, when she designed this it was very much intended to be used to mix not just as single use colors. she put a ton of thought into it and it is nice to see an outside thought on it because, let's face it, when she talks about it she might be a bit biased. ;)

Neons make very interesting mixes. Especially neutrals in my opinion. Mixes you couldn't get without them.
I'm just dipping my toe into the world of neons and you're so right! What are your favorite neon mixes if you don't mind me asking?
@@Pointebrush Opera rose with literally anything and mixing 2 neons that neutralize gets you some very interesting grays 🤩. So you would need a set with at least a flourescent green and a blue. Though the blue won't really be a fluorescent color. . Some sets only come with the warm colors. But you could use any blues/geens really if you got one like that. There is just some thing interesting about taking 2 fluorescents and getting a color that's not. Yes they are not light fast, but we can just play with them in a sketch book or something
I just purchased Kristy Rice's pallette I can't wait to receive it. I absolutely adore her. Her leaves and floral work is phenomenal. I want to be like her when I grow up in the watercolor world. So much to learn. And now I have another fabulous artist to follow Ms. Margot, and she's a dancer to which my son was a dancer. He was a theater kid, he had travelled the world performed on Broadway and became a choreographer for a performing art school in New Jersey. He has passed away in 2017 from Kidney disease. My son was an amazing dancer and very artsy. I'm so glad to learn from both ladies in my later years. Painting has become my absolute joy and stress reliever. Looking forward to my Paintcrush pallette!!

Kristys palette is DELICIOUS! Each color is so beautiful on its own but each color in this palette ALSO plays so well with each other! The neon yellow scared me too until I did a mixing chart and discovered the MOST GORGEOUS peachy pinks greens and everything in between! That color rocks my world!! She did an absolutely astounding job with her palette and I have been recommending it since it came out 🎉❤ thank you for the review video I’m sure it tickled her 😊

The metal loop under the paint palette is so you can hold it for field painting. It's like the hole in a traditional flat palette 🎨
My daughter loves to use her UV light "spy pen" to watch the neon designs pop out of artwork --- this yellow and shades like opera pink will glow under the light. You can even hide tiny designs that will reflect later 😁

Wow these paints look so pretty 😍 for someone who dislikes lemon yellow because it's too bright for me that it literally hurt my eyes I doubt I'll enjoy neon yellow 😅😅 but it looks so fun to mix with ☺️
I totally understand and very rarely do I use anything this bright straight out of the tube either. However, I will say that lemon yellow and other brights are the best for creating color mixtures because they dull down a lot less as they dry. Often if you mix muted colors with muted colors, you get a very murky painting. Hope that helps if you have any brights lying around that you want to find a way to use 😜
