Mushoku Tensei episode 21, Turning Point 2, is one of the most hyped moments in the Jobless Reincarnation anime series. Dragon God Orsted v Rudeus, Eris and Ruijerd, plus the intense moments with the Man God or Hitogami, were certainly enough to make episode 21 of Mushoku Tensei exciting, but the scenes also raised a lot of questions and mysteries! In this video, I answer some of the major questions about Orsted from the episode, including who is Orsted? How strong is Orsted? And what is the connection between Orsted and Hitogami? Orsted is hands-down the coolest character in the story. A dragon in human form is badass alone (and a severely under-utilised concept in fantasy in general), not to mention he is basically as strong as a physical being can get. But by far the coolest aspect is that he is at least 20 000 years old. I mean, consider that - the human brain grows tired by seventy years, on average. Not to mention he has lived through the SAME years, knowing his timeline like the palm of his hand, not even being afforded the small mercy of surprise to keep his mind going. All Orsted has is his mission and his vengeance. And yet, he finds the strength to slog through his loops anyway.
Now that is a depressing, epic fate to suffer.
He's also kind of adorable!

In a way, Rudeus and his family was his reward. Something to break away stagnation, and providing new fresh experience.
It’s like Rudy stumbled across the protagonist of the the actual story and realized he’s just an NPC in Orsted’s story.
Less an NPC and more like "temporary party member" lol

The original name of the The Human God was actually _Jinshin_, Hitogami is the name given to him by the Dragon God to distinguish him from the original Human God. Both are possible pronunciations of 人神.
The reason Orsted's mana regeneration is slow is actually a result of the technique used to hide him from Hitogami.

I remember "keishou no uta" did something similar instead of the lyrics saying "koujin" it said the japanese literal "inishie hito".

Actually, the precise to why orsted has extremely low mana regeneration is his technique that lets him redo his 200 years many times in order to make sure hitogami will die ( hitogami didn't know that until the MT story ending)

Orsted is one of the very few things i appreciate Mashoku author for because it reference an obscure SNES JRPG that was probably only played by me, him, Toby Fox and 10 other people across the world.

@@mr.protagonist5639 it is called Live a Live. It's a collection of seven short stories set in different ages of history, such as prehistory, ancient china, the far west or a near future where mechas and esp powers exist. Most of them are simple but enjoyable homages to a genre of fiction.
After that an eight chapter is unlocked, about a knight named Orsted, where the connection between the 7 stories is revelead. It's the kind of things where it's easy to say too much and spoil the big reveal. What i would say, is that the final boss theme, Megalomania, has been confirmed by Toby Fox as an inspiration for the much more famous Sans Theme.
I think now you have a wonderful time now that Live A Live will have remake with 2.5D style and the amount of people who play it will increase that number

i was pleasantly surprised to see the anime covered just about every detail of the encounter from the light novel (because the manga GUTTED this scene). every magic that was brought up there was shown here: voice magic, disturb magic, Rudy inflating his lungs and creating distance with air magic and his attempt to nuke orsted with fire.
its funny that if orsted wasn't so socially awkward, the entire first meeting would have gone differently. it shouldn't have taken 5 minutes to realize Rudy is an outlier which is older than the mana calamity AND immune to his curse. This should have made him worth questioning BEFORE collapsing his lungs.
If only Nanahoshi spoke japanese to Rudy, then the interaction would have been different
For sure. But it made sense that she never tried that. He doesn't look Japanese, and she only knows of people being summoned as she was, not reincarnated. She may have thought he was someone like her, but wouldn't think he'd be able to speak Japanese, and reincarnation wouldn't necessarily occur to her.
The existence of nanahoshi should be enough for Orsted to realize there’s at least 2 other people who could’ve reincarnated into the world
@@chilwil07 Yes, which is actually one of the reasons why Orsted heals him. Nanahoshi actually tells him something along those lines. It wouldn't have made sense for an apostle of Hitogami to just openly say they were working for him to his worst enemy.
Part of Orsted's flaws is specifically his unwillingness to discuss things first. This also changes because of Nanahoshi, because in their rematch Orsted actually asks why Rudeus challenged him when Orsted has left him alone for what was about 7 years. When he realizes Rudeus was manipulated he offers him a choice with literally nothing but benefits.
@@ApexGale There's one more thing tho... that isn't quite explained well. Orsteds method of finding the apostles isn't... good... He has missed one, granted, that one's really really hard to detect. But even so he does make mistakes. The fact of the matter is, Apostles, even if appearing harmless, cause a lot of issues. All will be explained, so, just let the anime play out.
To answer the question, Orsted is the true best waifu of the show.
Also mad props to the sound director who saw that the dude is called a Dragon God and decided to get Kaiba from Yu Gi Oh to voice him. Based.

Seriously though, we haven't seen a limit to how much mana Reinhard can absorb to boost his stats, since if he absorbs too much, he essentially disables all magic in a huge radius, which he doesn't like to do. We can assume that since Tappei said he could destroy the planet 'fairly easily', Reinhard could (probably) absorb the entirety of Od Laguna if he really wanted to, to essentially become god-tier in power.
Of course, that's disregarding all his divine blessings, his sword that uses Reid's ability to cut literally anything and can manipulate reality somehow? The Dragon Sword is weird.
Pitting anyone against Reinhard that isn't some sort of cosmic entity is terribly unfair, since in theory Reinhard could eat a cosmic entity and gain its power.
So basically, I'm super curious how insane Orsted is to compete with that.

Comparing Orsted with Regulus would be really interesting though, Orsted had the raw power and tech, but Regulus has OP authority.

Regulus is an unfair opponent for basically anyone. He's immune to change and his attacks have effectively infinite power. Really the only counter is something that targets his mind or soul.
Reinhard would have been able to defeat him with the Dragon Sword, but powerful ability or not, Reid doesn't consider him worthy.
Ostred is nowhere near as powerful as reinhard

After watching episode 21 I am definitely going to read the light novel of mushoku tensei. The story is just so interesting it’s the first time I’m going to read a light novel can’t wait.
it's 100% worth it. i read the LN and the Anime has done really well so far, and this most recent episode was absolutely amazing. All that reading the LN did for me was make me more excited for each episode

i was waiting for this episode to post this specifically, notice how within their dialogue, Orstead spoke to Rudeus saying that Paul should only have two daughters. Also alongside that he was surprised at Eris and Ruijerds progress in strength and well being. Now the point of singling this out is that his specific saying to Rudy that basically means "You shouldn't be here", is explained by the closing outro after each episode this season, where Rudy is highlighted in transparency where Eris and Ruijerd are walking around. (Posted this while watching video so no idea if you mention it)
I just thought it was a nice touch for the story that the outro hints or exemplifies.

Orsted and the Househusband in Way of the Househusband have the same curse. Dragon race gate magic is cool. I do hope we see more of Eris’s POV. Maybe that will be the start of next episode or the season finale since it showed how hopeless she felt. It makes sense he would attack on Hitogami apostle which also goes to show that there may be apostles in the world somewhere
Am I the only person who can't think of that Japanese story about the boy in the peach anymore without just remembering the version from Way of the Househusband? Certainly made watching Peach Boy Riverside a bit weird lol.

Also I recommend reading the actual arc of I stand on a million lives that was supposed to be the final arc of the anime. The last anime arc was a poorly written anime original

He treasures them. Rudeus lives for his family.
He’d do anything for his family, and if you hurt them, you will become his enemy.
He’ll hit you with all kinds of unthinkable attacks from all directions, and when it looks like he’s about to lose, he’d easily throw away his pride and betray Hitogami or the like and beg for forgiveness.
I can’t name too many people as devoted as he is.
So to be his ally, you have to pay attention to his family.
At the very least, any mistreatment is forbidden.
Which is why I’ll assure their safety to the best of my ability.
As long as I protect what is precious to Rudeus, he won’t betray me.
That would be impossible for Hitogami.
Leaving aside the calculating thoughts, it’s quite bizarre that Rudeus’s children are immune to the curse. But I don’t dislike it.

Though the episode is done obscenely well in my opinion and I would say surpasses the manga; alot of the conversation dialog was cut or switched and the final scene with Eris was changed which I felt would have hit harder in this episode if left in. Plus the inclusion of Hitagami just to add exposition was a brilliant way to extend the tension of a sudden death. All in all probably the best episode of the season for any anime coming out right now.
Now back to watch it again.
For me, if I was going to make some kind of hypothetical 'best episodes of 2021' list, I'm not sure which I'd put at number one between this, and the finale of Odd Taxi. It's been a good year for anime, for sure!

Omniscient reader's viewpoint is a Korean webnovel. One of the highly read novels on its original platform. The plot starts with the world of an apocalypse novel coming to reality. It only has 551 chapters and could be binged in under a week if you are a fast reader.
The story is highly meta-narrative talking about story writing, the characters in it, and the roles of the readers. It encompasses many mythologies from Greek to Lovecraft, Egyptian to Hindu gods while also utilizing real-life history and historical figures.
The characters and the subtext of the story have been very interesting and deserving of analysis. The characters feel real and relatable despite having an unrealistic back story but more trauma and charisma. I would love to see your interpretation of the story.

there is a strong chance Rifujin na Magonote is a physics student or had learned it because it seems he used some inspiration from it for the names of people and things in MT,
Laplace and Orsted are two very well known physicists. "Turning point" is a term used in WKB Approximation (Quantum Mechanics) it would explain how he came up with the magic system for the story as well.
LOL actually my boyfriend is a physicist so I'll ask him if he spotted any other references! Though I think a lot of people have heard of Laplace due to the Laplace's daemon thought experiment.

Rudeus and Nanahoshi are also prime examples of the butterfly effect in chaos theory. Their existence completely changed the direction of the world.

The Miko girl with time reversing powers got caught up with the first generation Dragon God's time looping magic construct casted in Orsted body. There was one chapter which entails the experience of the said Miko,
There was a time demons conquered the country she was living at.
There was a time when she was killed in civil war.
There was a time she experimented on due to her miko ability.
and many more. Times 200
The only thing that saved her was the boys smile and kindness.
She fought time using her time reversing powers, again over and over(every loopl. Seeing him die and die again. Her hatred grew, she does it on every loop. Since it doesn't stop. Every time Orsted loops she also restarts as a child(5) a normal villager in a rural village, taken by the kingdom, forced to use her powers to summon. Her actions began to twist the fate of the world, that twist is what you've observed in the episode 7-8 the red dot in the sky(magic that summons nanahoshi) while an unknown soul traversed that crack in fate and resided on Zenith's unborn son which was supposed to die. The story of Rudy begins with that, changing the lives of people around him, Paul, Roxy, Sylphy, and Eris. The twist on fate became bigger and bigger because of that which caused the event of Mana teleportation disaster.

Great Video! I have a question…as someone who is manga only will we ever be exposed to this lore? It are we missing out? I love the fact that authors have so many avenues to flesh out their stories, but it’s sucks when we only have access to one form of their media.

He actually the MC that want to beat a Demon King (Hitogami) and save the world.
The episode actually says Orsted is #2 of the 7, not #1, although it does say that in a fight he would beat #1, so I don't know what specifics put #1 above him, but perhaps in correcting that, if the LNs go into detail you could explain that in a video.
It's because orsted is holding back (his mana regen limited)
Technique God isn't really active in the story, so I just forgot he was technically above Orsted in the rankings. I wrote the video before watching the episode, which reminded me that I was wrong on that. To all intents and purposes though, we won't encounter anyone stronger than Orsted, kinda thing.

I know very little about Orsted, including all the new things from this video. but to ME i think its unlikely that Eris will ever be dethroned as best girl, as far as MushokuTense characters go.
Also i didnt reaalise we are already at ep 21. guess ill have som catching up to do!
Eris has been the only one with any development really but after episode 22 or 23 combined with the development of Roxy and slyphy Eris won’t be so far ahead it’s actually an interesting order of development from the start of the series till the end of this season and into the next arc

I don't know actually, I've never looked at a translation of the lyrics!
That could refer to Orsted, Zanoba or even Rudy if we really want to stretch it. Think about it, Rudues parents actually died before reincarnation. He was also cursed or hated by everyone around him before reincarnation. The lyrics telling to let go and sleep, may just allude to Rudeus dying in his previous life. But these are probably wild imagination from my parts.
So far the only POV of him is the redundancy chapter 13 I think

My opinion of him had already improved when he fought to save Rudeus but just hearing him

Say that waking up in the morning had been the most frightening time for him, that he was afraid that he'd wake up like Subaru after dying in his sleep, and that he had never imagined being able to sleep without fear.... that sealed the deal for me

He has done and is planning to do terrible things but everytime something about him is revealed I like the character even more
Really for me the only thing that's missing, and it might sound cruel, but I want to see his doubts, sorrow, despair, and bitterness
We know that he can appreciate good people and positive emotions, so to fully flesh him out, I'd like to see him express how hard 20,000 years of bitter fighting can be even for a Dragon God

Hoooollly crap, that episode was EPIC. Although I will say even having read the LNs(up to the end of 8 so far) I was veeeery angry at Rudeus even to the point of yelling(mildly lol) "Shut the F up Rudy" at my 📺. If he just shut the hell up then Orstead would have just walked on by without a single issue. (Btw the subtitle seemed weird for that part on what I watched, it seemed like Orstead said a sentence and all my subs said were "Man-God" and nothing else).
But as far as that scene goes I can not believe how much it got me! Yeah I can be a softy and the stuff with Paul/Rudy hit me pretty good but man this episode when Eris was crying and trying to do everything to stop Orstead even though they were all absolutely outclassed, that was powerful and surprisingly got me emotional and had the eyes well up a bit(no drops, but still wow). Thankfully they did the pinch part for laughs. Btw why did she "punch" him for hugging her?? Was it because she's still uncomfortable with that sort of thing? I know the pinch was normal Rudy being a perv but I didn't think or notice anything that was untoward with that hug. I am so sad we only have two episodes left until god knows when. I really hope that since they are exclusively working on MT that we get a half a season in a year-ish and then 6-7 months after we get the other half. Because this year it should have been Jan Part 1, July Part 2 so they clearly can do it faster than most studios working the way they are and especially doing half seasons.
Oh and If they do a movie I REALLY hope they don't go the Demon Slayer route and we see the movie and then the first 6-8 episodes of the next cour are just the same damn thing with 1-1.5 minutes of extra scenes, I absolutely loved the Mugen Train movie, but it's been way less exciting with that on, until today.

The problem with Rudy talking at that point, was that he didn't have the in-born fear of Orsted. It's one of those "Show, don't tell" moments. Rudy is curious by nature. Likewise, Nanahoshi has black hair and a slim body; this struck him as odd, as it was she didn't have the ears to match the slim body, and no one has black hair, hence, the focus on her hair.
Eris just isn't touchy-feely; she is also just plan violent. Most of Rudy's pawing has been hentai in nature.
All that said, the scene is pivotal for the future. It has a huge impact on Eris; Rudy's lack of fear, his actual combat ability, and his fragility. Her world now focuses on Rudy. On the slapping hand, Rudy learns that there are people you just can't be half-assed with, his inability to kill, is gonna get him killed. While he learned with Ruijeird that is eye can't be relied upon with everyone, Orsted had blurred his entire vision, that's how many moves he had at his disposal.

@@clintcarpentier2424 also It wasn't so much the talking at that moment that bothered me (although still if my strongest companion who terrifies the entire world is afraid, I think I'd listen) it was that he kept a secret for years even from his closest companions, I don't think there's anyone who would keep an important secret from everyone and then reveal it in less than 2 seconds to a stranger and especially a super dangerous one. Ugh I can't stop thinking about how bummed I am about 2 more episodes
Eris didn't "punch" Rudeus for hugging her, she did that to "punish" him for being reckless (which is an understatement and an understated punch, because he practically died).
So, every 200 years he goes back in time and relives it but my question is what if he does something different from the previous loops , does that a parallel universe is created because that didn't happen in the previous loop?
There aren't multiple universes. He is in the same universe that get continually rewinded. So if he does somthing diffrent, of course somthing diffrent will happen.
Thats overthinking it. Dont think the author will ever take it there, so its a waste of time to think about unless u wanna create ur own lore
No, I don't think it makes sense for this to be a parallel universes type thing (why would it matter so much for Orsted to achieve victory in just one of many realities?). I think it's more like Re:Zero and the world is literally reset.

I was so glad to see studio bind adapt the fight scene almost exactly how I imagined while reading the WN. I think it was beyond impressive, how amazingly it was done. Studio bind deserves all the praise.
I would have loved to see some of the dialogues that was cut, but probably it was for the best. It would have been too much on the nose if they spelled out everything.
I really really hope they get the chance to adapt all of the novel.

The Man God didn't reincarnate Rudeus. He had nothing to do with it.
