Oil pencils aren’t supposed to blend into each other. They blend by layering over each other, sitting over each other like transparent colored film and that’s how it changes color. It’s not going to smoush together like a prisma. Your color blends were to sparse and not intense enough to be able to create a new color blend. In order to create blends with oil pencils you have to overlap the colors with various layers. As oil pencils are layering pencils. They work different than a wax pencil. I don’t think your blend test was a fair representation of the blending that any oil pencil could do. However I love how accurate all your other tests were. Very good job! I enjoyed your video and great personality 😊

Ugh I know! I wish I’d done a little bit denser gradients for this test. Basically I’ve done ten lots of pencils tests together so I can visually lay them out and look at what’s done better or worse. Made it easier to rank (which to be fair im sure if I really should have bothered with as people can make there own mind up). I think I must have been a bit tired doing that test as yes it’s a bit sparse.
I’ve tried to do tests which I can do with all pencils and keep them the same. I weighed up doing layering for oil cores vs blending(mixing) for wax and just settled on a one pass blend. Unfortunately that’s the trade off with generic tests sometimes they are slightly unfair.

I like the Staedler Design Journey and the Stabilo Original. They are fabulous for small areas and the colour lay down is satisfying.

Okay, I’ll add them to the list of pencils to check out in the future ☺️💜

These pencils look very nice! Maybe I’ll try them someday!
BTW, just a tip: the tags for this video show Holbein / Japanese pencils just like for the previous video. You may want to update that. 😺

That was a lovely ☺️ presentation. Sure, staedler color pencils are great 😊 I will get a set of 72 for Christmas and a prismacolor set of 150 I hope to own a full set of each brand. Diversity is king Jack of all traits of colors :3 thx 🙏🏼

Thankyou! To be honest there is no such thing as too many pencils 😁! That sounds like a great choice, The harder staedler and softer prismacolor will give you a great range of pencils for any project!💜

@@StuffBySunshine thanks for the advice I always take notes 📝… @w@/ I hope to get also the dark edition of faber Castell of a 100 colored pencil worth of 30 bucks that is huge deal I suggest to get those and review it It would be a big plus with your wonderful channel. I also interested in the derwent chroma flows and lightfast (my highest aim) including the polychromos with that I will be guaranteed plenty of colors pencils for the next few years. plenty enough to play or practice my skills at coloring with low price colored pencils and the high end color pencils do some commissions to show my love 😍 art. I hope to see you in the near future coloring. I pray for your success. ;3

@@StuffBySunshine before anything else I hear rumors of a similar brand making “almost like” or the real deal of prisma color in Japan but no sure all this is base on word by words or the network in the art community. Sure news press faster than the colors themselves. (ノ∇≦*)

I actually have the black faber castells ordered so I can review them next year😊. I still have a few pencils (and some paint) to get through before I have a chance to look at them but I’ve heard good things. As for the Derwents, I gave a review coming up for one of the original pencils but I’ll have a look at the new ones and aim to check them out ☺️!

I love these pencils and I find they blend great but you do have to layer them and these layer great IMO.
I actually got some of my best results using these pencils but I also discovered the paper stock also makes a difference. I absolutely love the colour palette and these perform so much better than some of the other pencils from [insert name of company that starts with a "D" that has outrageously priced coloured pencils here].
Not for all tastes since these are not buttery but they are smooth (I do not find them scratchy at all), but like I stated, I got some gorgeous results with these so they are my go-to for colouring, and outside of the Polys, these sharpen the best & have the best points for small areas, which is something I cannot say about the Prisma Verithins (which have been a nightmare to work with for me).

They did surprise me how good they are to be honest. While I’m still a big fan of the Polychromos for a lot of my professional work I’ve done a few art pieces with these and each time been very impressed ☺️

I would expect with a consistency of gradient like with these color pencils, problems with blending and strength. As I posted on the other color pencil tests, light waves and colors are not all equal, so you have to do something to the formula to even everything out. When the gradients were fairly consistent with a predictable drop/step in the blue and green,I wasn't surprised that the blending and the strength had issues. There is always a trade off.
Also I would be interested in seeing Cecil's suggestions of a taste test, and and velocity drop test.

I mean for what they are, i'm pretty impressed with these pencils though. I think experienced pencil users could adjust the way they used them to make them work for them.
I asked Cecil he says they taste pretty good so, I guess thats an extra point to Staedtler? :)

No brand of color pencils is going to have exact consistency of lead strength for every pencil due to the differences in the actual pigment. I suppose that is why you are trying the various colors to get an average-smart.😮

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine  Před 9 měsíci

      Glad you’re enjoying!
I have been fairly surprised by how consistent some of them are, but yeah I couldn’t see any way to make this work other than averages. I actually really wanted to do multiple packs for them as well but $$$. With the break test I’ve been trying to redo any test that seems out of the ordinary (the staedler test I did a dozen times as they were so bad) just to check the results remain the same. As a whole they do.
Basically I wanted a series of generic tests I could use on a heap of pencils, sometimes doing it like this is not super suited to each pencil ie wax vs oil vs other mixes. But that was the only way I could figure out how to do it so people watching could see the same/similar example/test for each pencil.
