Reviewing The Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencils - Are they worth it?
Hi friends!
Today we are looking at a very special pencil, possibly one of the best British pencils of all time. The very elegant, very velvety Derwent Lightfast pencils
The Lightfast's are Derwents first foray into oil based pencils with a claim to 100 years of lightfast colour with shall we say unique colour range.
BUT are they everything they are cracked up to be? Are they worth it? How do they feel! How to they handle? All the questions!
Lets test them and find out:)
- Sunshine💜
ALSO YES theres a funny background at 33:00 I just thought it looked cool so i've left it :D

    Hii, Nice review! Well done! I also have this koh i noor progresso and i also might do a review about them sooner or later. From now i am still having fun using them and testing in Multiple ways.I bought them in a trip to Croatia and there they were surprisingly cheap for their quality. Your review is technical, you actually Talk about the most important topics we should consider when chosing a pencil color. Very complete, well done for that! I would add something to this review, once on my tests i am not that technical- testing them in a colorful paper (example Kraft). They are truly amazing and actually pop comparatively to other pencil colors. I think their potencial is in this and in the fact that the pencil is woodless (and you can use similarly to pastels or charcoal ) - i think you referred this last One. The way they blend, is different from other brands - for example, in the case of caran d'ache luminance or on the case of bruynzeel, the colors really blend and transform In other color - you really get green from mixing blue with Yellow. With progresso blending is not that smooth, but it works somehow. I really love to work with them - a thing that i dont like that much in them is the color selection - i would expect to have more difference between the light blue/green to the dark blue/green. But white helps a lot getting different Shades. They are amazing! Try them on different paper 🙂

  • @kokuinomusume
    @kokuinomusume Před 2 dny

    For some *really* strange and niche Koh-i-Noor pencils, try the Tri-Tone (wood pencils) or "Magic" (both wood and woodless pencils in several formats) line: they're pencils with a mix of 3 colours in each pencil so as you lay colour it keeps changing. Some of the mixes are less surprising like lighter to darker greens or blues, some other mixes are more exotic like red-purple-black or grey-orange-red.

    • @StuffBySunshine

  • @JessicaSzempruch

    I built up to a full set of these through open stock over time. They are very unique pencils, and the earthy color range is good for me as I deal in landscapes. These pair perfectly with the Luminance from Caran d’Ache to get an awesome color range when combined. That’s a very pricey combo, but one that for artists is well worth it since the Lightfast and Luminance will stand the test of time, both in quality and on paper.

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před 2 dny

      Oof that is a very expensive setup! Do you find you stick mostly with the lf1 for the lightfast and add the the Caran d’Ache to fill in the colours that are lf2? Or ignore the lightfast rating? I’ve heard about the pairing with the Caran d’Ache from a few people, while I haven’t actually used them yet but hopefully I’ll get a chance to soon. I’m doing a piece with the lightfast at the moment and yeah it’s a challenge with the limited pallet but they quite a pleasure to work with. ☺️💜

    • @JessicaSzempruch
      @JessicaSzempruch Před dnem

      @@StuffBySunshine I typically use both LF1 and LF2. I don’t have all the Luminance, just some open stock to fill in the gaps with Derwent’s color range. Maybe in a few years I will eventually own them all. I find buying small sets and then build up with open stock over time is easier on the wallet.

    Very cool! I get the feeling you’re onto something watching this review… The scale test revealed something I love about these pencils. You can get very light color but also nice coverage when using very light pressure, so they’re good for layering kinda like a Polychromos; but also you can use them with hard pressure / burnishing and get really deep and smooth color. So they’re kind of a “best of both worlds” in my mind when it comes to texture / application! (And your scale test proved to be a nice way of displaying that in a more objective way) I also find that they blend extremely well, especially with a Derwent blending pencil or solvents. BUT I’m with you on the quirky color palette! Even with the full 100 color set I see what I believe to be sacrifices, probably due to the lightfastness! The best example really is the Mid Ultramarine which I find quite the misnomer as it’s very light, nothing mid about it! And following it, the next lightest blue is something like the Sapphire which is already quite dark, so there’s not really a true mid blue in the set. However, what the palette lacks in brightly saturated colors, it more than makes up for in DEPTH! The greens in this set are unmatched by any other colored pencil range, they’re really so unique and they go so dark it’s unbelievable! Very hard to beat for realistic nature / landscapes (which admittedly are not my forte but…) 😺

      Thank you! Your observations and suggestions are very welcome and honestly very interesting and I’m now pretty excited and curious to see what they’re like on an actual art piece! Every time I do a pencil review I then use the pencils on at least one art piece to see if I want to include them in my mediums and I’ve always come away with some pretty interesting and surprising things that I didn’t find out during the review. Anyway, thank you again for your comment, I’m looking forward to experiencing them properly 😊

  • @beuvelain
    @beuvelain Před 6 dny

    I find them hard to work with on their own (too soft to use for details and subtle gradients and too hard to be able to layer lighter colors on top of darker) , but I love the darkest colors to layer on top of other, softer pencils, because they are so transparent AND pigmented. It makes something darker without it losing its saturation! I haven't been able to find that function in other colored pencil sets! Also, I agree with another comment here: I can't believe you're not the most watched CZcamsr in the art category!

    • @StuffBySunshine

    Most if not all colored pencils are a blend of Oil and Wax. When a company advertises their pencils in one way or another it only means there is more content of the advertised material. I hope people know that… Not sure with the use of the scale and those initial tests as professional art supplies are designed to be layered. For instance in test 2 with white, if you start with heavy pressure the tip will lose it’s sharpness right the way thus creating more texture as it’s not able to get into the deep areas of the paper…

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před 5 dny

      Sure that’s true and they often have multiple other resins mixed in as well. It’s just a way to get across to people what to expect from the pencil. Same thing with the scale test, you at home can see how they respond and work, It’s really easy with a low saturation pencil to drive them into the paper and say “see how much pigment they put down”. With the scale, every pencil we do has a base line, or atleast a common pressure we can look at ☺️

    Hello sunshine, 😇return to start of experiment. To harden the Musou black at the scratch, you must add MAT catalyst for polyester resin (this is the composition of the Musou black) I haven't tried 3.0; I have enough experimentation to do with Musou for the moment. On wood or paper, the backgrounds must be prepared with special resin primer paints tinted black or MAT black. A very expensive addition of products, but for what I am going to do with it it is worth the cost. Have a nice day. I live in France, so you will have to look online for catalyst mat in your country 🙃

    • @StuffBySunshine

    They are too transparent, not richly pigmented. They do not work on dark backgrounds. My experiance is Derwent Artist is all you need. I have some of them from my now dead artist mothers tin, she bought them in London 40 years ago, they are still bright and smooth. 40 year old Derwent Artist look and perform just like the new ones. Think about that.

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před 9 dny

      Ahh that’s because the Derwent artists are wax not oil. For oil pencils you build up layers for wax the pigment sort of smooshes on the page. With the Lyra or any oil pencil the more layers you do the more vibrant they become. Im doing some more reviews on Derwent pencils right now (hopefully the lightfast will be out on Monday) which you may be interested in ☺️

    I still have one of the first batches of Black 2.0 from Stuart Semple. I've heard 3.0 and 4.0 are blacker, but for the very rare occasions I paint something... why? Black 2.0 was already way blacker than any other black paint, black 3.0 is even blacker. I feel like the only selling point of Musou is bragging rights that it is blacker than Black 3.0. Musou makes you physically sick, and you can't use it in a studio without protective equipment, and it's not THAT much blacker than Semple's paints. Certainly not noticeably so unless you have samples directly next to each other, and I feel like that's really the only time Musou would really make a difference and wouldn't be worth exposure to the fumes. Musou is blacker, but Semple's paints are usable without killing yourself on fumes.

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před 11 dny

    Fantastic video. Plus it's great to find more Aussie creative CZcamsrs. Thank you for your hard work. I have Black 3.0 and had been doing some tests myself, like comparing various blacks I have, putting various matt varnishes over blacks to compare (which makes Black 3.0 look terrible) and trying crackle paint over the top of it (which just shrinks and peels itself right off). Great to find your channel and I do hope you continue to do more experimental stuff like this.

    Cheers for a brilliant review, you've earned yourself another sub! Despite your final summary, I will take my chances, live with the stench and order myself some Musou though. ;-)

      Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed ☺️. I must admit while I love the 3.0 when I’m going for as black as possible i tend to more grab the musou myself. Its negatives aside it does do a good job!

    What sort of primer did you use, acrylic or enamel? It seemed very shiny. Also, be careful with mdf, it's full of formaldehyde and arsenic

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před 19 dny

      Matte acrylic, though as it comes out of a can it’s a bit shiny due to the light unfortunately. Will do ☺️

    Prismacolor pencils are excellent colored pencils. They are nice and soft. This works nicely on several paper surfaces however other papers, anything smooth are not friendly to the soft lead and wax. In that case the oil pencil works better. It works fine on vellum and mixed media.

      Interesting! I considered including watercolor and enamel in this test but figured it would be more honest if I just stuck to one type. I primarily use watercolour in my work so I’ll have to check out the golds ☺️

    it appears I'm a little late to the party, but this was fantastic. I wanted to buy some black 4.0 for some mini painting. However what's the fun of a miniature if i can't let ppl pick it up to get a closer look, it's for fun not a museum piece! I'm gonna try to get my hands on Musou black. it looks the best IMO. thanks

    Hi there! I love your videos (even though I discovered you like a week ago) and I'd love to see more art videos and reviews from you. Tbh, your style looks very vintage and nice and gives 80s and 90s combined with modern style and I love it. And it would may sound odd but i think you should do tutorials about clothing and etc. for people like me who doesn't knows how to dress.

      Thankyou! I’m sorry they are so sporadic coming out, the more I do the better I want them and as I’m sucking in front of camera I’m trying to get better☺️. I have a terrible secret to tell you! I have so few clothes I keep cutting them up and just making them look decent on camera with pins, if I walked down the street all the pins would fall out and I’d likely end with much less on 😂. Thankyou for the compliment tho! Glad my hodgepodge of clothing is looking good!💜

    I love these pencils and I find they blend great but you do have to layer them and these layer great IMO. I actually got some of my best results using these pencils but I also discovered the paper stock also makes a difference. I absolutely love the colour palette and these perform so much better than some of the other pencils from [insert name of company that starts with a "D" that has outrageously priced coloured pencils here]. Not for all tastes since these are not buttery but they are smooth (I do not find them scratchy at all), but like I stated, I got some gorgeous results with these so they are my go-to for colouring, and outside of the Polys, these sharpen the best & have the best points for small areas, which is something I cannot say about the Prisma Verithins (which have been a nightmare to work with for me).

      They did surprise me how good they are to be honest. While I’m still a big fan of the Polychromos for a lot of my professional work I’ve done a few art pieces with these and each time been very impressed ☺️

    I've seen other artists suggest a coat or tow of white laid down, prior to gold paint. I have not tried gold paint, but want to at some point. I like the Matisse in your examples the best for what I would probably use it for.

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před měsícem

      The white did make quite a bit of difference when I primed the boards. Although it took longer for the gold to get gold, it did give it a decent base to work off☺️.

    I am reluctant to try Musou, as I worry about the scent of it, but I may have to. I have been wanting to do a dramatic, highly contrasting art piece with a black background and heavily pigmented focal subject but have been reluctant to use my Black. Yes, it's not 2, 3, or 4. It's Semple's OG Black. It's nice but it dries quite 'chalky' looking and while it does absorb light, it's got an almost grey appearance to it when light hits it. I am a huge fan of Japanese-made art and stationary supplies however and if Musou is the most pitch-black (per say), I may have to invest in it eventually to try.

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine Před měsícem

      Sounds like an awesome project! Yeah in terms of the light absorption I definitely think musou would work well. If it helps, it doesn’t continue to smell once it’s dried!
