  • A raw video exploring the Mellieha Bay Hotel inside and out, from myself who used to Holiday with my family here from 1979 to 1989, a couple of weeks before it is Demolished to make way for the new Mellieha Bay Hotel.
This should be the last footage of this iconic venue which was the first Super Hotel in Malta back in 1968 and the first package holiday on the island produced by Thompsons now known as Tui.
I will try to include a link in the comments to the Malta Times which gave news of the accepted planning permission from May 2023 after 5 years of trying.
It will also show an artists impression and architects render of the Hotel to replace it by the same owners.
I was not able to upload here without verification but just google the hotel and it will come up 3 items down in the search results.
If you have any photos, especially from the 70s 80s and 90s please upload to the comments below
Although im aware i shouldnt have been on the premises, i would like to state that i did not break in or cause any damage or breakages to enter.
I came in from the sea and rocks and entered through broken windows and doors as seen in this video.
My whole two weeks trip to Malta was based upon seeing my favourite destination one last final time and to bring my Mum to the Island one final time.
Im just sad that my Father who passed suddenly last Christmas was not able to join us. He would have loved it but would have been shocked just how built up the Island is now with many places unrecognisable.
Enjoy and remember the good times.
    Best wishes,
    Richard Austin-Rees

Ahhh, this hotel holds so so many memories for me.
We stayed probably 1978-79 I was about 5yrs old, my sister 9yrs and our cousin was about 14-16yrs old. There was about 10 of us and we we're all on the ground floor, I shared a room with my nan and my sister with our other nan. I use to love having breakfast on our balcony.
Back then, you could have breakfast in your room. I remember playing in the lovely gardens outside our rooms, and the little paddling pool and pool. I can't remember the waiters name, but he and his wife always served us our dinner.
Also remember my family members have a cocktail, called sharks tooth. I liked it lol. After dinner my cousin, sister, and I use to go in the nightclub. My mum remembers looking for us, and I was dancing by myself. The staff told her, that we could stay.
I also remember the films, I have a memory of my dad, and us watching smokey and the bandits. I think, or one of those films.
Nan and I use to sneak off to Afternoon tea, we also hired cars, and remember parking out the front.
We always wanted to go back, but never did. My uncle took my auntie back just be she died in 1988. Both my parents have passed. Thanks for the video, it's funny how a hotel can be so special. The staff were amazing.

Thankyou Richard for doing this. Stayed here for a week in the early 2000's and have fond memories of my stay. Was shocked to find out today that it was no more but you have preserved and shared the history of this for all to see. Well done.

Amazing- thank you for showing the video - it's made me cry - what a sorry state it looks now! I got married here 21 years ago & it truly was a special place. The grounds & gardens were fantastic. I have many photos. My wedding day could not of been better. The staff were excellent- I have never found another hotel as good as this was since! We went back in 2007 with our baby Son & it was just as lovely also last year & stayed across the bay from it. We managed to get to the gate but no further. So sad its going 😢 thanks again for the internal viewing it really took me back!

Thank you for sharing your memories.
We always stayed in one of the garden walk rooms in the eighties.
Bill kelly was compere etc before Joe Cutajar. Some great memories of the limelight lounge with Joe and the Falconiers.
The staff were all exceptional and I am still in contact with one of the waitresses nearly 40 years later.
Waves night club certainly bought back some memories.

I feel quite nostalgic after watching this video. I was working and living in Mellieha Bay Hotel for 3 years. Gym, playroom and kids club was refurbished in 2016. I was painting the kids club. After that, I used left over colour in my room and painted clouds. So sad that garden and palms are destroyed. But your video brings me memories. Thanks.

Quels idiots!!!

I stayed here many times between 1984 and 2016. I saw many changes there including the revamping of the Cabaret room. In 1984 a continental breakfast was served in your room. Later a buffet breakfast was served in the restaurant. I was all waiter service in 1984 except Sunday night which was always a magnificent cold and hot buffet. I think buffet service came around 1990. It is very sad to see it in such a state, although as I post this comment in July 2024 sadly the building no longer stands.

Such a shame. I got married there in August 2019. It was a beautiful hotel with amazing grounds and views. I stayed in the main side of the hotel and had a ground floor room and could walk straight out into the gardens. This was also my first time seeing wild chameleon.

Great video thanks for sharing. We had some great holidays in Malta always stayed at the Mellieha Bay Hotel. We were last there back 2019, lucky I had my drone with me and managed to get some aerial shots of the hotel.

Your video took us right back to the last time we were there, the sights and sounds and the heat, but not forgetting that view across the bay, that view is what made it special for us.
Malta won't be the same without the hotel.
