This makes so much sense! I don’t have a dishwasher so I never understood why people washed dishes prior to dishwashing . I always felt : if you have to pre-clean, just wash em’ for all that … but the dishwasher gives it that extra clean to make sure germs are completely removed.
I just told my friend this the other day. She was like why are you washing the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher? I said because it's for sanitation😂

I agree! In our house, we used it 99.999% of the time as a drying rack after hand washing. The ONLY time we would use the dish washer is when we had a party or during the holidays and dirtied up a lot of dishes. And even then, we still washed the pots and pans by hand. Definitely a drying rack! 😂😂😂

I washed dishes from age 8 to adulthood, I’m from the Caribbean so dishwashers aren’t even in most households. My first home with a dishwasher, I threw those dishes in. Its such a time saver. My kids don’t get the luxury unless it a holiday, they have to put in their time. 😂😂😂

That is exactly what you’re supposed to do. Dishwashers sanitize they don’t actually wash.
Yes, I pre wash all of my dishes, then load it up in the dishwasher, run it, put the dishes away later. After they’ve dried.

This first dishwashers and apartment dishwashers do a terrible job! Everyone has that stuck in their heads! So they don't use it because those experiences wasted their time.

Yes! I specifically had one installed YEARS ago because I was the ONLY one in the house that would regularly DO the dishes - so to everyone else.. they HAD a dishwasher - ME!😂😂😂 That got old FAST it was a TREMENDOUS help for me! It can withstand much hotter water than my hands can - and with implementing a usage system it saves a LOT of water.

Yea, I'm black, a chef, and a germophobe, YES, I use a dishwasher. It's FAR more sanitary, uses less water, and is time-saving. And doesn't damage/dry out your nails or skin on your hands. Win win.
Yes! The women in my households do. Yes, my mother's house, my cousins' houses, and my home. Yes, I am Black and all my family is Black. Now, the men in those houses and my single friends are 50/05 on using the dishwasher. It could be women who take care of others that use the dishwasher. If mother's have their kids doing dish, they might not have given them the out of using the dishwasher.
It's definitely a drying rack. We wash them then put the dishes in there .

Yes! We use our dishwasher all the time. I feel like some black families didn't use a dishwasher to save on the water bill. I was the dishwasher growing up. When I heard about dishwashers, I knew I would own one. 😂
Growing up, we didn’t have a dishwasher, so it wasn’t even a consideration. But at my grandma’s house, she had an old school dishwasher that was a separate piece of equipment and because it used so much water, it was only used for holidays when there were a lot more dishes than usual.

But on the real, am fully Black and so is my parents and siblings. I am personally anti-dishwasher and believe in doing them every day for my household. But my sister and parents are pro-dishwasher machine users for years now.

Yes, the dishwasher is a must. I washed so many dishes in my childhood I felt like I was the washer in a restaurant. I will say it taught me to be thorough and pay attention to details. 💯

Growing up my three brothers and I were all the dish washer our parents needed.
And now that I’m grown and married, my wife refuses to use the dishwasher as well. She says she doesn’t trust it to clean as well as she can. 🤦🏾♂️😅

I was the dishwasher growing up and used one for the first time at 25 and never looked back. I still light rinse first. I definitely was healing my inner child that wasn't allowed to touch it.

This is undeniably true; lived in houses for decades, think I bought the soap once and never opened it....I need someone to breakdown the psychology.
Ours broke and never got fixed. There were 8 of us kids. My dad was like "Why waste money on fixing it when we have eight sets of hands that can get the job done".
I was under the impression the dishwasher was broken and my grandmother couldn't afford to fix/replace it. Turns out it was all a lie!!!!
It’s a game changer especially when you consider that our hands can’t handle the high temp water that our dishes need to be properly sanitized of bacteria coming from handling raw meats. Dishwasher makes cooking (or just being in the kitchen) flow, we need to absolve ourselves from this perception that our hands can do the only cleaning/sanitizing that we require.

It's always been my dream to have a dishwasher because as a kid my job was washing the dishes. I made a vow that when I grew up, no matter how much it cost, I was gonna get me a dishwasher. I use my dishwasher but I don't use the oven, the oven is for storing my pots and pants and my skillet, cause we never have enough cupboard space. That's what the oven is for in a black household.😂

My BFF moved last year and she had her first ever dishwasher. I had to show her and her family how to load the dishwasher. No shade sis needed dishwasher on boarding

Lived in an apartment for 5 years and the dishwasher was storage. Just brought a house dishwasher included and STILL wash dishes by hand. My OCD doesn’t trust it.
We had 1 for about 6 yrs. Opened it twice. Once when we moved in, last time when we were moving out to make sure there was nothing in there. WE are the dishwashers
I’m black. Been that all of 23 years. My mom didn’t use the dishwasher so much that when she renovated the kitchen she turned it to a mini wine cooler. She said it had more of a purpose now..😂

First of all this is hilarious, and I love that we can culturally relate on these topics. Yes we use the dishwasher in our house! The ones I had growing up didn’t clean the dishes all the way, so I never used one again until I had a brand new one. Night and day compared to my childhood. I only hand wash dishes that aren’t dishwasher safe…and if I need something quickly.

I used my new dishwasher once, and the dishes didn't get clean. Then I was told to PRE-WASH the dishes. What?! So, a fancy dish rack is its only purpose 😂
My dad BOUGHT and installed a dishwasher when I was about 10 because my mom wanted one fir when they had family dinners and parties. Otherwise, the kids were the dishwashers. "Why should I pay for electricity when I pay for food for you to have the energy to wash the dishes." The lack of question mark is intentional. When I went to college, the dishwasher broke. Nothing changed except we had to wash A LOT of dishes that night. You KNOW there were no dishes in the sink when the lights went out.
Same with Cubans. I do think part of that was my grandma, who lived with us, took offense to the idea of us automating one of her self appointed responsibilities of dishwashing to a machine lol

I used to beg my grandma to use the dishwasher growing up, it was always a no. Even on holidays. But now that I’ve gotten older she’ll use it every once in a while and it hurts my feelings 😅

We lived in about 8 different homes before we started using the dishwasher. It was first never used, then as a drying rack for pots . Now, we use it all the time.
😂😂😂 I've tried to be a dishwasher user but then I noticed a layer of residue left from the soap so it's back to being a disk rack!
Didn't raise my children to use the dishwasher. It was only used after big gatherings. One son said when he grows up his house will have a dishwasher and swimming pool. He was able to check it off his goals. We sit back and laugh now but they end with thank you for teaching us. It's just my husband and I now and I still don't use the dishwasher for several reasons. I don't mind washing dishes but drying dishes somehow disturbs my peace. I've never seen dried dishes out of the dishwasher. Plus I can't see running the dishwasher for a few items. While cooking I wash dishes and wipe countertops as I go. For that reason, it's a no for me. I wash dishes as we go and return them to the cabinet several times a day.

I grew up handwashing and for many years it was the only option. That being said growing up in a house of 8, when we DID get a dishwasher, best believe my mama was using it as well.
I had a Jamaican American roommate who had a small dishwasher in her condo but the previous owners were also carribean and never used it, so by the time we moved in, it was stale smelling and then we never used it haha.
I am all for using a dishwasher. Especially after learning that it saves money in your water bill and actually sterilizes the dishes versus just disinfecting. But I hate having to wait around for it to be filled in order to have clean dishes. When you're single or living with one other roommate, it takes a while to fill and I have a limited amount of utensils, plates, etc, so I end up hand washing because of my lack of patience and need.
In high school my best friend was mexican and one day i went to get a fork or something out of the dishwasher and there were straight up groceries 😂 snacks and beer. At the time I'd had no idea other cultures use dishwashers and ovens as a pantry/extra storage

My mom grew up where she did have to hand wash dishes because she lived in a household where they couldn’t afford a dishwasher. When she got older and my daddy bought her a house with a dishwasher, she said she never looked back. I don’t want to move anymore that doesn’t have a dishwasher now.

This is a point of contention in our home. 😂 I grew up using a dishwasher, but my husband didn’t. He doesn’t believe the dishwasher cleans the dishes adequately, so he washes them by hand, and then puts them in the dishwasher. 🤦🏽♀️ Full disclosure, my dad retired from the Marine Corps and I grew up mostly living in base housing, which came with a dishwasher. We continued to use a dishwasher even when my parents purchased a home. I thought that it was an appliance that everyone used because that is what I was accustomed to. We had a dishwasher growing up and I always wanted to use it but my mom and dad always told me that I was the dishwasher and we didn't need to use it 😂 When I moved out, I USED THE DISHWASHER from that point on. Lol
I’m probably your grandmothers age, when the dishwasher came out in the 70’s the idea of it sounded great but when they showed that you had to scrape the dishes, then wash them however slightly(how do you wash dishes slightly), then put them in the dishwasher and they would come out sparkling clean. I thought it was nonsense, extra work just to wash dishes. But when I got in my apartment it had a dishwasher and I liked it. They were better than when I grew up and this was in 2009. If I had an active family like yours, it’s a definite yes to get one.

I’m Korean ( mom) and Black (dad) in GA and the dishwasher is a drying rack. It runs once a month to clean it and make sure it doesn’t get dirty/ stinky.
