/ qtv Jeff Buckley's Mom, Mary Guibert was recently on Q TV talking about the release of the DVD/CD compilation 'Grace Around The World'. Sorry for the title tease. :)
Gosh. That last minute of the interview. Combine the collective loss that everyone around the planet feels for losing Jeff Buckley and you don't even come close to what a mother must feel for losing a son. But Mary has to bear both. What an amazing woman. Thanks Mary.
You can tell the way speaks is very much like his mom. She is very articulate and she is also very musical. It made my heart wrench to hear how she tried to rekindle the father son relationship even though she was clearly abandoned. Respect for her .
I am so grateful to Mary Guibert for keeping Jeff's musical legacy alive for all of us fans. A truly brilliant woman, a kind and giving spirit. I will only support projects that she has endorsed. If you read this Ms. Guibert, thank you. Your gifts mean so much to me.
As a 40yr old music fan I probably only hold about 5 artist's truly dear to me..Jeff is one of them.Hallelujah gets the limelight but Last Goodbye is up there with the elite. The Chicago performance of it was life changing for me.
What Mary had to say about why she thinks people connect with Jeffs music (at 7:17) to me, was incredibly profound & so true... It actually brought tears to my eyes (& Im always the one rolling my eyes at people who "cry" watching videos) Jeffs music does awaken something within you & depending on the song (& my mood) can evoke feelings of inspiration, melancholy or even make me feel like can kick the worlds ass lol! But I love how she described it, thank you Mary x
Oh Lord! What a heavy duty it must be for her to be the curator of her beloved son's legacy. She's done him proud. I guess the only thing more painful than remembering him would be forgetting him. Bless you ma'am.
Yes! And I would say there was a star machine back in the late 60s and Tim Buckley rejected it. Look at his later work, there was no way that would have appealed to the masses.
I know people say Jeff looked like Tim and sure, of course, but wow, look at her eyes. You can see Jeff staring out of them. Her mannerisms - They remind me of Jeff as much as his actions reminded me of Tim. The teeth too. Very Jeff. That little head tilt she does to the right when saying 'pontificating'. Jeff. Wow. I know, I know, that's genetics, imitation is how children learn, but it's just so clear. The dorky laugh too. JEFF! xD
I always felt her partly like my mom, being born in 1966 and looking like her son when I was his age.. I’ve never been crazy about Jeff but appreciate his chords and harmony, progressions of longing and lyrical tension, but most of all: his KINDNESS…
I met Mary when I was working at a Greyhound Shelter in Garden Grove with Jeffs half brother Corey, she was awesome, and Corey gave all the employees cassettes of My Sweetheart The Drunk and guitar Picks. Yeah'" your'e jealous a little bit go on admit it, haha.
A lot of people give Mary bad press and say she did things that went against Jeff's wishes. I imagine she did what any mother would do~ take the reins and do what she thought was best. I met her once, and found her to be personable and warm. It seems unfair that she's judged harshly.
Hi, Thank you for sharing such information about that personal side of Jeff when he was young. And sadly, being only 33 years of age now, I was a child In the mid nineties when Jeff Started having a following and people became aware of His music… funny thing is I only started to know who Jeff Buckley was about one month ago when I wanted to listen to the song Hallelujah and I came across The most popular cover Virgin ever of it, With which I fell in love. I was shocked and upset to know the artist had died at such a young age and 1997. Then I researched more and fell in love with all his concerts that are recorded which I can view on CZcams, and loved his interviews, and very much Appreciate the soul that he was, what a loss... That is cool of you to Not mind sharing tidbits about Jeff around the time you knew him. Was just curious of what he thought about moving around as a young kid, F he ever shared his thoughts with you? And the last time you saw him You said it was the early nineties? I know You miss him, and that was special that you shared so much time Together in your younger days. Thank you for reading my message and I can give you my personal email address if you ever wanted or preferred to respond On another forum. Lastly I know this post of yours was from 2 years ago but I am just coming across it now haha . Thank you again for reading!
You've walked with me by the sea in the salt air that clung to her hair You provided some definition when I felt I wasn't even there ~ Did she care? Dream brother You're in Me A lighthouse soul~ A symphony ~ A magnificent ember You were The only one to remember the way home and I'm not alone.. Hallelujah! Hallelujah.
This is great, thank you. There was some criticism of what seems like Jeff's work being sold off by his mother. But one of his comments sticks to my mind in regards as to how he wants to be remembered; he simply replied along the lines of: "I want people to remember my music". So I think there's nothing wrong with all his extra music being released.
That's what makes someone like JB so special cause although he sings other's songs, he so original. I mean you can't find another person that you can say he sounds like this person or that person, cause he doesn't he just sounds like himself. Like all great persons.
I hesitated for a while. Thanks for letting us share this. Gives me another opportunity to say how much my son, Adam, and I respect Mary for being true. To Jeff's mum and those who are supporting her in keeping integrity as a foundation stone to the legacy - thanks from two of his most loyal fans!
Greetings from Tim Buckley was the film, came out in 2013. Penn Badgley did a pretty good job impersonating his stage presence. Wasn't a great film though
This interviewer was tried for violent sexual assaults of several women prior to Cosby and everyone else after. About 20 women and men came forward to report it all in 2013-14. He was disgraced and a disgrace to the good nation of Canada.
THANK YOU MARY......I AM THE ONE WHO STILL SCREAMS HIS LYRICS DAILY, FEEEEEEEELS THEM, WEARS HIS SHIRTS, IS TATTOOED IN THREE PLACES ON MY BODY, WITH HIS NAME, SCRIBBLES, AND LYRICS. YOUR PURE DROPS.....TEARS, AND HIS, KEEP ME MORE THAN INSPIRED...IT KEEPS ME LONGING...FOR THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM. I ADORE YOU FOR YOUR ::REAL:: DEDICATION.
Mary: I am a spiritual healer. Channelled by Jeff Buckley. I was guided to this interview. He was not too happy about the movie but he is not angry. He understands you, loves you and is proud of you. Your a strong woman, a great mom. He loves you! He is sorry for any pain the drowning caused. Yes it was accidental!! He wanted to get married. He has not said don’t do it again re movie. Gives the 🚥Green light just choose well this time lol
So, I suppose 'Greetings from Tim Buckley' was the film they were talking about? Penn Badgley did an amazing job, although I wouldn't call it a biopic, in fact it was much more about Tim.
@andpyramids Furthermore, don't forget that Michael, Mick, and Matt were all very dear friends of Jeff's and have worked numerous times with Mary to bring some amazing pieces of Jeff's work to the light of day. Sure, this isn't the way Jeff would have wanted it, but what choice do we have?? He was taken from us MUCH too soon, and we have no choice but to fill that void with the magnificent live works he left behind, which those 4 have painstakingly dug through for us to enjoy. We are blessed!!
We know, through stories from his friends, that his mother created an unstable environment for Jeff - like being raised by a true artist... and from this interview I see how very lucky he was to have such an intelligent, deep-thinking Pisces like Mary Guibert in his spirit-kissed life. Perhaps his music would not dig so deep into our souls had he not been uprooted constantly and forced to find his own comfort within his little child-heart. This Orpheus continued the essence of the Buckley tenors- probably ancient Irish lore going on there- how else could his Shakespearean type death have been foretold in the prophetic lyrics of every song he ever wrote... Jeff is Art.
I prefer to remain sceptical about these sorts of films. I'm another lover of jeff buckley's music, and I wouldn't like to see some half-rate film about someone who I adored and still do adore. if it has the same quality as say, "walk the line", which had very good performances, and a very involving story, then I will be happy. this film has to be top notch or nothing at all.
I feel like everyone is so intrusive hearing her talk about this again. How many times does she have to discuss her past with strangers? It's so heartbreaking she lost her son and lost her child. I don't think I would be able to talk about it if I god forbid I lost my son! I feel as much love for my son as she of course felt for hers.
I heard that Reeve Carney was the actor that is going to play Jeff's role and I think it's great. As much as I like Penn Badgley I don't think Greetings from Tim Buckley showed what Jeff really was as a person.
+Arlo Hovelfield That's some out-of-date information about Carney. It doesn't look like her movie is going to happen after all. Maybe the Badgley movie didn't do well enough.
@@bonmot7850 The Badgely film was more about Tim than it was about Jeff. Regardless and biopic of Jeff Buckley would never had mass appeal, it would be only for his fans,
@tinypaperboat Really?? Because from what I've read, Micheal Tighe has stood up for Mary and what she has had to go through and has even shed light on some of the words Jeff had said about his upbringing. To paraphrase, Jeff was a young man just coming to terms with his own individuality, shaking off the shackles of his upbringing, and like any young person (especially one with a rocky past), felt he had to distance themselves from that situation.
it's a shame Ghomeshi was such a creep. q has never been the same, or will be the same since he was fired. He's the only one who could have done this interview justice, and he did. RIP JB.
I have never seen a real full length inetview with her. within the framework of other docs she has the tendency, or they have the tendancy, of making her come off as a bit of loon. but she is a very sweet and real person and mother. real beautiful stuff. the end really got to me , I guess it runs in the family ;) really beautiful stuff made me think of my mom :) thanks giomeshi and mary
If a movie is ever made about Jeff Buckley, Jame's Franco HAS to play the part of Jeff. Their look's are uncanny..they look just alike! Jame's Franco has the obvious Charisma to pull off Jim's obvious charisma...It just all make's sense. I have discussed this with many people who feel the same way..Eric Montgomery, I am more than impatient..it is aggravating and frustrating..and if this movie is not made, it will be heartbreaking! Thank's for letting me vent. ~Kate
I agree with what is being said. Mary needs to stop milking money out of her sons death. Honestly, the last two album releases didn't have any new material so she's clearly just trying to get money. Stop it Mary. And stop deleting Jeff videos off of youtube. His fans want to see him again.
It seems that no one knows of this interviewers -Jiann Ghomeshi's recent run in with serious accusations of violence towards women in Toronto. Very unfortunate, as he is a hell of a journalist!
I’m a huge fan of Rufus Wainwright and Jian did several interviews with him. Although he may not be a great person, he certainly is a great interviewer.
@theancient74 The thing about Michael standing up for Mary is in the biography on Jeff called "A Pure Drop." The stuff about the band working with Mary on producing Jeff's work is in the linear notes of any of the posthumous releases, particularly Mystery White Boy.
No, Merri herself has admitted she had to cut him off. They started fighting after the Last Goodbye vid. The voicemail was recorded in 92, maybe 93. Sony's contract with Jeff says they own the rights to all live recordings. Mary gets the blame for a ton of shit Sony has done.
I've never heard Jeff buckley play like AL Dimeola or Joe Pass lol I'm not saying it's not so because he did have fantastic guitar skill but come on now...!! Love Jeff
I had had certain reservations about Mary's business decisions til this point (eg. slightly redundantly reissuing already available material), but she really does seem like a smart and tasteful woman, and I'm glad she's made the choices she has. Can't ever have enough Jeff. I hope the film ends up bringing something interesting to the table, although I have to say I'm severely sceptical. I hope I'm proved wrong in my hesitation that it may trivialise him, but I guess you can't stop Hollywood eh.
They never really did make a biopic of Jeff's life, but "Greetings from Tim Buckley" (2012) does portray a young Jeff Buckley at his father's tribute concert in 1991. Penn Badgley was amazing as Jeff. I highly recommend that film.
Merri and Jeff fought and stopped talking by 1996 so what the hell does she know? Joan was a drug user, so Mary doesn't like her. Jeff's live in girlfriend, rebecca, gets on with Mary. And it's sony that's taking the youtube videos down. They own the rights.
I also prefer to remain sceptical about these sorts of films. I'm another lover of jeff buckley's music, and I wouldn't like to see some half-rate film about someone who I adored and still do adore. if it has the same quality as say, "walk the line", which had very good performances, and a very involving story, then I will be happy. this film has to be top notch or nothing at all.
The obvious choice to the large majority of Buckley fans to play Jeff is James Franco. Not only do they look alike but I think that Franco has the spark that Jeff had. Why can't they do this the right way? Brad Pitt was working really hard to make this happen but since his production company was partly owned by Jennifer (also a huge JB fan) it all just kind of stopped. Brad and Jennifer need to MAKE THIS HAPPEN and get Franco however you can. I"m getting impatient.
I loved how the guys in the other room behind the glass were rivited on her like gophers frozen where they stand. What does she mean by saying if tapes from the vault get out to send flowers to her son Corey?
This is a great interview. She's a very wise and very sweet lady. I'm wondering when we can expect this biopic?? I'm of course a little weary of such a thing, but as long as she's running the show, I trust it'll come out okay. Anyone know of a release date, yet??
my guess is that james franco will play jeff (thank god), but robert pattinson will be offered to play michael tighe (the likeness is pretty incredible). it is just a guess though.
they don't own the rights to live show recordings or bootlegs by fans Merri and Jeff did not fight stop talking in 1996, theres plenty of proof from letters and diary entries that they were still friends up until his death, including a voicemail left my jeff.
@s1ygirl She was saying that if the tapes were released, it must mean she's dead, since she wouldn't release the more intimate tapes. Since she'd be dead, it'd be nice to send her other son flowers. Make sense?
Tim wanted to concentrate on his career, so he left for a tour, leaving behind his pregnant wife!.. He also had a girlfriend at the time.. That was a wound in Jeff's heart forever.
Because he wasn't ready to be a husband and didn't want to be a father. That's what his song "I never asked to be your mountain " was about. Tim left Mary when she was three months pregnant.
@verolicas69 Man I wish I could have been there - somewhere he started off playing in the early days and played one of his final shows at! How did it go?
Mary has attacked the fans so many times in the past. She wiped out all rares of Jeffs music from the internet (including youtube) for no reason. She only endorses his music when she is able to get money from it. Jeffs friends have said shes a bitch. Jeff didn't have a great relationship with his mother himself . He always said he was alone most of his childhood because she went around with men which caused them to move a lot. Now she tells lies to the media.
Mary, if you're reading this: PLEASE let me camp in the vault for a couple of weeks so I can listen to his four-track recordings! I promise I won't steal the music, but I NEED to hear what was going to happen to My Sweetheart The Drunk. Scout's Honour! I don't care how terrible the recording quality is, but the vision behind it has got to be the 'ultimate contemporary timeless music'.
Gosh. That last minute of the interview. Combine the collective loss that everyone around the planet feels for losing Jeff Buckley and you don't even come close to what a mother must feel for losing a son. But Mary has to bear both.

Oh Lord! What a heavy duty it must be for her to be the curator of her beloved son's legacy. She's done him proud. I guess the only thing more painful than remembering him would be forgetting him. Bless you ma'am.
Thanks for this! The public needs much awareness about the "star machine" and how major artists are destroyed even as they are exalted.
Yes! And I would say there was a star machine back in the late 60s and Tim Buckley rejected it. Look at his later work, there was no way that would have appealed to the masses.
I know people say Jeff looked like Tim and sure, of course, but wow, look at her eyes. You can see Jeff staring out of them. A great interview!! Very impressed with his mother. She knows him best!!!:)
Not in a musical sense. His bandmates, manager, Dave Lory, and his A&R guy, Steve Berkowitz, knew his musical instincts better than anyone.
I always felt her partly like my mom, being born in 1966 and looking like her son when I was his age.. I’ve never been crazy about Jeff but appreciate his chords and harmony, progressions of longing and lyrical tension, but most of all: his KINDNESS…

Love Jeff
@namdlefhtes Thanks, I guess I didn't pick up on her subtle version of "over my dead body". :)
what she says after 7:17 is so true
I had had certain reservations about Mary's business decisions til this point (eg. slightly redundantly reissuing already available material), but she really does seem like a smart and tasteful woman, and I'm glad she's made the choices she has. Can't ever have enough Jeff. I hope the film ends up bringing something interesting to the table, although I have to say I'm severely sceptical. I hope I'm proved wrong in my hesitation that it may trivialise him, but I guess you can't stop Hollywood eh.
Same, but it's clear her intentions were good. And I had no idea how much debt he was in (thanks to the record company) at the time he died.
I wish families wouldn’t get involved in an artists works after they’re gone. Please do not make a movie. Just let them go.
They never really did make a biopic of Jeff's life, but "Greetings from Tim Buckley" (2012) does portray a young Jeff Buckley at his father's tribute concert in 1991. Penn Badgley was amazing as Jeff. I highly recommend that film.
Ethan Hawke about 10 years ago was Buckleys' Doppelganger.
I've always thought that as well another candidate would have been James Franco or his brother Dave!!
Thank you for this!! I thought I was crazy. Everyone keeps saying James Franco, I'm like whaaaaat???
God, no. He’s just goofy looking. Nothing like JB.
Merri and Jeff fought and stopped talking by 1996 so what the hell does she know? Joan was a drug user, so Mary doesn't like her. Jeff's live in girlfriend, rebecca, gets on with Mary. And it's sony that's taking the youtube videos down. They own the rights.
07:31-08:01 Absolutely spot-on!
Dude, I was about to write the same comment. He would have been perfect for the role. He may be a bit too old now, unfortunately...
YIPEE, a jeff buckley movie!!!!!!!

Hope there is never a movie
anyone get goose bumps when he says the late jeff buckley?
my guess is that james franco will play jeff (thank god), but robert pattinson will be offered to play michael tighe (the likeness is pretty incredible).
it is just a guess though.
they don't own the rights to live show recordings or bootlegs by fans
Merri and Jeff did not fight stop talking in 1996, theres plenty of proof from letters and diary entries that they were still friends up until his death, including a voicemail left my jeff.
@Lycantrophie They are going to do a movie but every name coming out to star isn't who we really want. James Franco is the perfect Jeff.
@s1ygirl She was saying that if the tapes were released, it must mean she's dead, since she wouldn't release the more intimate tapes. Since she'd be dead, it'd be nice to send her other son flowers. Make sense?
I'm I just going crazy or can I see Jeff Buckley looking on from behind the glass in the background at 3min 30sec!
wonder why Tim and Jeff's mom broke up
because Tim was 18 and she was younger
Tim wanted to concentrate on his career, so he left for a tour, leaving behind his pregnant wife!.. He also had a girlfriend at the time.. That was a wound in Jeff's heart forever.
Komedi Anne ooooh OK thnx
Because he wasn't ready to be a husband and didn't want to be a father. That's what his song "I never asked to be your mountain " was about. Tim left Mary when she was three months pregnant.
The fact that an 18 year alt boy doesn't want to commit is not too surprising.
@verolicas69 Man I wish I could have been there - somewhere he started off playing in the early days and played one of his final shows at! How did it go?
@captaingoatbeard7 I agree!!
what are you pawn'ing off next Mary???, can't be much left !!!!!!!!!
2 in a row??? Why?!
Joe pass.. amazing
Connor Paola should have been Jeff Buckley in the movie!!!
joanne devlin what about paolo nutini
@nahyouare16 do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.
