    I think the geology and chemistry of Venus is interesting enough without having to resort to the search for life as justification for going there!

      Agreed. We should start working on terraforming Venus as soon as possible, as well. Something like Kurtzgesagt’s outlined plan. Low-ish tech, but multi-generational.

    The archean extremophile, Picrophilus, can survive in a pH of 0.5. But the Venusian atmosphere has a pH of -1.2. You'd think that, if organisms could survive such acidity, we'd find them on Earth, maybe in Ethiopia's Dallol salty hot springs. Life is found there around the edges but not in the most extreme pH zones.

      Also something that shouldnt be forgotten; we have these extremophiles on earth because on earth life had a chance to evolve to all possible places. This promotes complexity very much. I doubt that in such restricted conditions life would be able to do much.

    I remember reading an article that says that there are particles in the atmosphere that absorb light. However, these particles are exactly the same size as bacteria.

      That's true, you're referring to the UV absorbers that remain a mystery today! Now, there are a lot of _things_ that size that aren't related to life, so of course it could still end up being a coincidence, but if it isn't a coincidence, then the biggest hint that Venus has life has been known, and been staring us in the face for decades. That's definitely worthy of further study lol.

    Very interesting. Thin crust, hot core due to the pounding it's taking, leading to volcanism without plate tectonics. Very believable as the volcanoes there seem to be everywhere, and without pattern. Too bad it doesn't have a moon to suck up a lot of the projectiles. Might be a different place.       Its interesting that one massive projectile name Theia gave Earth her moon to protect from countless smaller projectiles. Makes me wonder what would happen if we could throw Mars at Venus.

      It's thought that Venus's proximity to the Sun (and maybe Mercury?) is enough to prevent it from keeping any moon for sustained periods.

    Venus may not have had Earth-type lightning, but what about the lightning that is associated with volcanic eruption?

      Earth have lightning volcanoes. We have different atmosphere but the way that lightning ignite is the same.

      You'd still detect that via radio waves. All lightning gives off radio emissions.

      Moving charge or electricity through planets is the cause of volcanic eruptions. We can witness looping from volcano to volcano on earth. Which is why you have several eruptions going on at the same time, and why we see lightning. There is also lightning before major earthquakes.

    When I was a kid I would turn on AM radio during storms to listen to the lightning crackle and whizz. It’s a neat effect!

    I’ve picked up radio waves from lighting in my truck before. Only big, close lightning strikes will do it, but it’s a little cool. Flash of static at the same time a flash of lightning happens.

    What is interesting about Venus is it has no magnetic field like the Earth does. Earth's magnetic field originates from the circulation of molten material inside its core. Apparently, Venus has no such movement which gives question about having any plate tectonics. Venus generates its magnetic field from the interaction of the Sun’s solar wind with the planet’s ionosphere, the region filled with charged atoms. Those charged atoms create electric currents. As the solar wind interacts with Venus’ atmosphere, it produces a chaotic but full-fledged magnetosphere around the planet. How it produces radio waves from reconnecting magnetic lines is a curious thought. Venus’ magnetosphere forms a “tail,” or a magnetotail. Is this induced magnetosphere falling apart at distance the source of the radio waves?

      Also interesting is that planets do not require a magnetic field to maintain an thick atmosphere. So this says something about Mars as well. That the Martian atmosphere has mineralyzed in it surface instead of being stripped away by the solarwind due to lack of magnetic field strength.

    I'm still not throwing out lightning radio pulses on Venus. Lightning exists on the other terrestrial planets (including Mars in a way) and all the gas giants. Hence, lightning is quite a common atmospheric phenomena.

    Interesting. Regular meteor impacts might well seed the upper atmosphere of Venus with the minerals needed to support life. That's the real problem w/ high altitude life thriving, getting it the heavy stuff. Unlike earth, the atmosphere of Venus is like soup. The chunky kind.
    The atmosphere of Venus is wild, counterintuitive. A few years back NASA asked for concepts for a non-electronic Venus surface image/data transmission system. I did a bit of homework and was shocked at how dense, viscous, and toxic the atmosphere is at the surface. I did work up a concept but ran out of time, but the project taught me that conditions on Venus are nothing like you might be imaging. they are far, far more challenging.

    After hearing how many times Lightning may strike on venus in a year I had to look up that same fact on earth and if I didn't experience daily life here on earth I would find that fact scary as hell.

    Great video, Anton! I especially like when you cover my second-favorite planet. (My favorite is Earth. 😀) I’m old enough to remember the Pioneer Venus missions in the late ‘70s and I remember hearing about how much lightning they thought was happening. I also remember during the Magellan mission how it was thought that there was no platonic activity. So, it’s great to see scientists are still analyzing the data and revising their initial conclusions. In other words, I love seeing science in action.
    I also can’t wait for the upcoming Venus missions from NASA, ESA, Space Lab, and others (e.g., ISRO).

    models for carbon dioxide traps heat . It seems it would trap heat both ways. Venus has a 90% reflection rate. And singing the wrong way would generate heat plus venus had more heat to trap being closer to the sun.

    So if I am hearing you right, there is some possibility of a bacteria that has evolved completely outside of earth’s influence living inside the upper reaches of Venue’s atmosphere. I am getting a queazy feeling that it would be a terrible idea to bring anything that has had even the most minute exposure to said atmosphere to earth. 🤔

      @@Rastamahatma I appreciate the perfectly logical explanation, thank you! Still going to think about it with unnecessary details and possible horrific consequences though. Some sort of mold spore maybe? It will probably be some sort of symbiotic reaction to any like molecules and learn how to use its properties to either feed on or hunt with. Maybe it gets into the water 😱 and pees!!

    May be life is more likely to exist in the mountains on Venus .. since it's cooler and the atmosphere is lighter. For example, Skadi Mons is a mountain on Venus in Maxwell Montes, at the center of Ishtar Terra. It is the highest point of the planet with an altitude of about 10,700 meters (about 35,000 feet) above the mean planetary radius.

      The scale height for venus is 16km, so at that altitude it would still be a good 30 atmospheric pressures and the temperature seems to be about 350°C

    Hey Anton, Thanks for sharing this excellent video❤. Are you aware of any experiments in LEO (on ISS) to simulate plate tectonics? One could imagine a layered sphere floating in microgravity while being tested on cooling and other factors simulating martian, earthly or venus like conditions? What do think. Is such an experiment even possible ?

    Fascinating video.. the impact theory and core heating seems to make sense. I have another question, Anton, would the dense Venusian atmosphere absorb most or all of the kinetic energy of the smaller to medium size projectiles? How much more mass and kinetic energy would it take to actually impact the surface of Venus? .. and how frequent to cause a cataclysmic surface event and, heat up the planet core? ! The Earth's moon for example has no atmosphere, (and a denser crust) and heavily cratered.

    Venus is so bright in the morning and is so beautiful. I think the Bible refers to it as the bright morning star. Jesus is also referred to as the bright morning star. So cool to see your video. Venus is very interesting.

    I believe Earth would be like Venus is today had Theia not impacted it. Theia has allowed Earth to be active for far longer than it naturally would of been IMHO. Theia "stirred the pot" so to say.

    The pressures and heat make it so much easier for the magma to ooze to the surface it won’t be explosive because of the 92 var pressure at the surface that’s nearly 1300 psi

    Thanks Anton, I love your presentations!
    I thought that Venus does not have it's own magnetic field.
    Without this protection, would the atmosphere not be slowly stripped away by the solar wind, like it has for Mars?
    I would love for you do do a presentation on this topic as well, pretty please.
    As to the increased risk/rate of meteorite impacts on Venus, does that mean that the possibility of setting up cloud cities on the planet may not be as feasible as some scientist have though?

      Because Venus is much closer to the Sun, it get more solar winds that strip more of the atmosphere than our planet, but if my memory is correct, Venus magnetosphere is little less than ours.

    So good to see a scientist who is not pretending it's all "settled science" with just a couple of things "we don't fully understand". In fact we been fed a bunch of speculative BS pulled out of the ether ( to be polite ) and presented as established fact. Just like with Jupiter when we got near enough with actual instruments , it turns all guesses and affirmation upside down. I really appreciate Anton's down to Earth approach to astronomy.

    Whoa, when you said snapping magnetic lines, my alarm bells start ringing a full blast! No way that such a slow rotating object will have 100k snaps of the magnetic lines! To have that you need speed and size, because entanglement of those line need at least those 2 attributes....

    @1:39 I hope people know that Venus does not rotate that fast. One Venus solar day lasts one third of an Earth year! Not to mention the sun rises in the West! If there was any way to get it to spin faster so one day is 24 hours, I wonder much how things would be different.

      To do that you need to find a way to reduce the heat and the carbon monoxide and others that trap the heat in the planet, then you need to find a way to reverse it spin (because Venus spin is retrograde) and accelerate in the other way. No chance in hell we can do that in 1000 years a least, if not more... And I am Very HOPTIMISTIC here....

    Interesting new data. Using Occam's razor, I doubt there is any life in Venus' atmosphere. If life ever evolved on Venus, how would it ever get into the clouds? Especially if the planet heated up fairly quickly, being closer to the sun. There are many reasons to learn more about Venus, but we have to get over the idea that we might find life there or could perhaps terraform the planet when we ruin Earth. Venus has always fascinated me, and I hope I'm still alive (I'm 73 now) when our marvelous space probes visit this planet again.

    It is definitively shame past efforts to study it had so many technical issues.
    But at least we are catching up with where we could have been in terms of knowledge.
    Peek under Venu's skirt of clouds and see the wonderland of fire... i guess any space agency? please?

    Plate Tectonic in my opinion are more important to release trapped gasses back, by volcanism. Having volcanism w/o plate tectonics release gas, but also basic materials, able to capture CO2. No recycling = more binding, less atmospheric one. Venus probably always was too hot to have proper sedimentation of Carbonate, maybe also the lava composition is less effective, as CO2 sequester. And so with or without plate tectonics, Volcanoes pump gas up, but not a lot is bound be weathering.

    What about the robotic chemist in China using A.I.
    The robot recently went through 3+ million combinations to find the best way to create oxygen from the minerals that are already abundant on Mars. I thought that was fascinating.

    There could be life in the Venusian lithosphere, but if it were like Earth life, it would need water or dilute sulfuric acid. It would be hyperthermophilic, acidophilic, and barophilic. Our tree of life is hyperthermophilic/extremophilic at the root and as the Earth cooled life spread to the cooler niches. There might be microbes in the Venusian atmosphere, but chances are we won't find life there in the cooler regions. It just didn't have time to spread everywhere and adapt to the cooler spots.
