Cambridge University Vlog - Freshers Week & Beyond As An Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic Student

- This is not a vlogging channel.Take a look at my other videos and that's obvious. But then this video isn't like the vast majority of "Cambridge vlogs" out there telling you about my perfect routine and eco-friendly vegan diet. Instead, this is just me filming the kind of things I get up to here at the University of Cambridge as an Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic (ASNC) student rather than pre-planning what I think my audience wants to see. So what I hope this is, is an authentic experience of the highlights of my first 2(ish) weeks being back at university. It contains a lot of typical Cambridge things like libraries, rowing, the Fresher's Fair, supervisions, translating Old English, getting cheesy chips from the Van of Life, and early morning fire drills. Also some more typical university things like lectures, seshing, Nandos, buying mixers in Sainsburys, hitting the gym, working on a dissertation, cooking, and doing laundry. And a lot of very me things like vlogging in Dutch, using axes and clogs for interior design, throat singing, visiting a Rembrandt Exhibition in the FitzWilliam, setting up a reenactment group and buying cheese. I do also do a lot more work aside the few little clips shown here but I feel if I showed it all it would get very dull very quickly, hence also the funky angles when writing my dissertation. Let me know if you want to see more of this type of video - it's not too hard for me to do it just requires me taking a camera everywhere and pressing record every once in a while. Any questions about Cambridge, how to apply, what I study, what life is like etc then feel free to ask away.

Never knew you went to Cambridge, hope to see you there this autumn
Are you a student as well? Should definitely grab a drink together (social distancing allowing) come next term!
@@historywithhilbert146 Sorry for the late reply, been swamped with revision. I'm a prospective mathmo and STEP grades + A-Levels permitting I will hopefully be there in Autumn. Of course, I would love to meet up, circumstances allowing. After all your channel has been a great help for me, finding areas of history that I wasn't too knowledgeable about and giving me a springboard from which I can dive into some further reading.
Hassan Hope Results’ Day went well for you!
The fact that Hilbert knows what mixes well with vodka makes really happy
But of course ;)
So that's your face. Never knew you went to Cambridge. As someone who wishes to go there, could you make a video about your application and etc.?
My dude is fecking handsome
James is a stunner it’s true
"hören, lesen, staunen!" is a great series, there is a serious ornithology book for adults compatible with the system too.
Nice! My dad said he recognised it too! Rumour has it within the ASNaC Department that it was ordered by one of the professor's on the false belief that it was an Old Norse textbook and has been abandoned to the table outside the faculty ever since..
@@historywithhilbert146 I am pretty sure the have animal and nature /city noises but I haven't see mythology yet.
@@fionafiona1146 Haha maybe a future edition ;)
Very interesting, growing up being told about how elite Oxford and Cambridge were I always had the impression that it was just study study study with the occasional boat race thrown in, with no time for a social life or anything fun. I would be interested in more of these videos giving a truer image of life in the top universities.
I’ve never been so excited for a CZcams premiere in my life
You should be this excited for every single one of my videos
It's nice that you have axes to the right tools
Multi purpose tool really ;)

This is not a vlogging channel, but I did love this and wouldn't be upset if there'd be more coming. :D
I’ve got a fair bit of material a bit more from Cam and some from Romania and other places so I can give it a go
Useful research for the interview this Wednesday, thank you Hilbert
Glad to hear it! Best of luck :)
@@historywithhilbert146 Thanks! Sorry for the late response lol, really enjoyed the interviews and the experience staying at Peterhouse
Thanks for the view behind the curtains! Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it! I’ll do some more next year when I’m allowed back
Can confirm Hilbert was not in fact better at rowing
Overuse of the arms and back, can’t imagine where he picked that up....
All for the occasional vlog, a nice change of pace from your usual content. Nice to have a face to place to your lectures and the vlog helped humanize you lol
I can't stop looking at your damn face you handsome man
Oh wow! never realised you were a Cambs student! Hoping to be reading Classics there in September!

looks fun. So will you have a degree in Arts at the end?
Yes it's a BA :)
Full credit to James Combe for carrying that video
100% the only reason this video wasn't all trash.
Well to be frank understanding dutch is much easier than geordie
Honestly so gutted I didn’t get picked up in Winter Pool this year yeno, never wanted to go somewhere quite as much as Cambridge. Hopefully, adjustments pulls through in the summer
That is a shame, but keep trying there's a lot of people here now who missed there offers but persisted so keep at it I would say! Best of luck!
History With Hilbert cheers bud. Keep up the good work on this channel, watched for a few years now and the content keeps getting better 👍

Ahah yes! Rocking the mongol throat singing
Please do more videos on ASNAC because I've pondered doing it alot if I could get over my anxiety to fly from Australia to study and spite my heavy Dyslexia 😶
did you film this during or before the corona pandemic because here in the Netherlands the university's are still closed or are there different rules in the UK
This was from October so well before the lockdowns :)
And I have a few questions about Cambridge and University in general. I've thought about applying for a doctorate in classical archaeology as I have interests similar to yours i.e. what I call "The classical North." I have an interest in music history, pre-Christian and pre-historic music of Europe specifically. My background is in medieval history with intermediate Latin skills. Do you think a doctorate is wise? Is my background good preparation? What do you do with a doctorate besides teach anyway?
Welcome to Cambridge!!
I hope you guys studying at British unis know just how lucky you are! You have incredible study programmes and course offers, whereas in Germany I had a hard time finding an interesting programme in the first place (I chose British and American Studies) but hardly any of the courses in that prgramme actually spark my interest - this is what I'd like to learn about!
Can you please how does Tripos work? I fell into the rabbit hole of reading about Cambridge in Wikipedia last week but I can't quite get it. Does it differ with every subject you choose to read?
Lol I never would have thought we are the same age 😭 I have a few friends who go to Cambridge as first years, they say it's really tough!
Is this your first degree? Was considering doing it but went for English at York instead (which has a fair bit of Anglo-Saxon, mind) with a view to possibly going on to do ASNC at a later stage.
This life is my dream :(
I feel very lucky having been able to live it until last month
I see the Frisian flag is well represented :) nice video!
I’m hoping to get into Cambridge next September for LLB Law :) so this shall be informative
Ooo best of luck man! If you do drop my a line and we can grab a drink some time!
He's dutch !!! but the north east twang ?
What were the course requirements like? When I last looked it required AAA and had strict preferred course requirements, as well as highly limited spaces and being very very unadvertised (had to do a deep dive to even find in, and no one I could find had even heard of it).
So the requirements for me were A*AA and it's a great shame they dont advertise it more!
Groups of people...
Ah the memories
I know right!!
Baker's magic sheet such a good textbook though! How did the dissertation writing go?
Finished now for the best part of a month!
@@historywithhilbert146 Amazing! Are you considering post-grad study?

When was this recorded? Isn't freshers week in September?
This is from October (and yes it has taken me that long to release)

Did a week there as part of a sutton trust ASNC Summer School a few years ago. Decided to apply for CAHA at Ox instead, but seeing this is slightly making me regret it tbh.
It’s a lot of fun, perfect course for me really!

No way! Didn't know you were at cam. I was up the road from Chad's at Robinson! Graduating now though :(
Aw no that’s a massive shame! Let me know if you’re ever back in Cam though! Did you know the ASNaC in your year, James?
@@historywithhilbert146 He's actually the year below me (I'm 4th year MML) but yeah he used to live in my staircase
You make Cambridge look pretty fun compared to all the other vlogs about it. I was considering applying to the Cambridge when I was thinking about getting a degree in history, but I settled for CS degree in country because I'm also a computer nerd and I did not want to bother going across the state to take the tests required as a US applicant and then leaving home and going half way across the world to get teased for saying bathroom. Love your content! Keep up the great work!
Lmao, 7:30
It’s definitely both, but I think a 20 minutes video of me mostly studying wouldn’t be very interesting! And give it a go I wasn’t sure if I’d get in but very glad I tried and am now here!
Rowing is great, make sure you get the movements in the right order. Stretch your legs, bend your back and then pull in your arms. And remember not to move forward too fast. Just say appeltaart met slagroom xd.

Looks like that singing Chinese man at 15:13
I mean, Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic studies, there's just nothing like that where I live, I'd love it, I guess it's too late to try Cambridge ;-; , maybe someday.
Give it a go you never know! There’s a lot of mature students here as well so if it’s something you’re passionate about I’d say go for it!
@@historywithhilbert146 Well, I think I'll take your advice, for what I've seen it is too wonderful of a course to let it pass, thank you very much!
Please visit Micahistory 2, it would mean a lot!
Back in uni (Amsterdam) I did (among others) courses in linguistics, Old Frisian, North-Frisian, Danish, Old Scandinavian linguistics, Old Irish (Utrecht) etc. Lot of fun, Only graduated and did a PhD in pure maths though. Life’s too short eh? But I still enjoy languages and history as a hobby.. In protte wille dêr yn Cambridge! Ien kear der west ûnder myn fekânsjewurk as ierdbeiplokker yn East Anglia...
Wow. Linguistics is a very interesting subject for me and I also love learning languages (but have to put the lessons into hiatus 😕) my undergrad is chemistry and have yet to decide what path I would take for higher education
He spoke welsh
Wow did not realise you were younger than me this whole time. I'm 25 and have a degree in War and Society from a fairly mediocre university whilst my older sister went to Oxford and studied law. Now I see you doing well for yourself at Cambridge and I'm suddenly reassessing my life... Good on you anyway. Feeling too old to enjoy the classic student life and envy all who get to enjoy University the proper way unlike myself. May try to redeem myself with a masters but it's not the same! Haha
I have officially watched too many Inspector Morse and Lewis episodes; I recognize far too much for somewhere I haven't been within a zillion miles of. Not your dorm, 'course
You're at Cambridge?? I didn't know that 😱😱
That deadlift form was so bad my back started hurting watching it.
Hibert: "Vlog"

Hello, based department?
Are you both Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic student?
I am indeed, but who do you mean by both?
Hmm, maybe I’ll go to a school in the UK for graduate school where I’m done with my undergraduate.
no ragging?

Ah that’s amazing what did he study?
@@historywithhilbert146 he studied Chemistry, and his brother was at Trinity and studied Physics

Holy crap you got into Cambridge? What grades did you get at a level/whatever dutch equivalent you have?
Somehow! I got 3 A*'s and a B at A-Levels.
History With Hilbert Did you need much extra-curricular crap on your personal statement? I can’t get any of that right now and am therefore worried if I won’t stand out compared to my peers.
History With Hilbert You got those grades in the Netherlands? Could you tell us a bit more abt the requirements to get into Cambridge/Oxford? I’m looking into doing a Master’s there, currently doing a BA in Leiden.
@@gokai976 uh he said he did a levels which are from the uk
Nick D Fair point, I first thought he might’ve converted his Dutch grades so to speak, for ease of reading, but yeah it makes more sense now
Aren't you concerned about your academic e-mail being shown at end of the video?
omg not oxford *crazy parties at night, sex ,drugs and lots of alchol , 101 viking banners and flags...

It's so strange seeing Cambridge full of life here given how empty it's been these last few months. I hope we get some life back into the university and the wider city soon
How did you vote in the election, Hilbert?
I couldn’t because I’m a Dutchie
