Jewish prayer/amidah standing prayer/with hishtaHawa (prostration)

  • The amidah (standing prayer), also called shmonei esrei (18, the number of blessings in it) is performed three times a day: arvit/maariv (evening), shaHarith (morning) and minHah (in afternoon).
I am praying here utilizing hishtaHawa/prostration. In more ancient times this was the way to pray for a Jew, as attested to by Rambam in his work Misheh Torah. The rise of Islam, whose prayers are done in this same way, was largely responsible for the discontinuation of this way of praying in Jewish tradition, as distancing the community from identification with the neighbors has been a long standing Jewish tradition stemming from the mitzvah to not learn how the neighbors worship their deities and say, “I will worship God in this way.”
It’s really a shame that the practice became virtually unknown to the Jewish world, being kept alive mostly by tehmanim, Jews from Yemen.
It involves five kneelings with the touching (or near touching) of the head to the ground, and one prostration at the end. This practice helps one to integrate the movement of the body with the intention of the heart and the words of the lips, body/mind/spirit, assisting one in reaching achdut, oneness…or at least pointing in that direction.
May this video be a blessing, and may you find peace in the light of the Infinite.

Muslims , please respect this brother for what he is. I am Muslim and I have much admiration for this brother for his work and devotion. He's attempting to build a bridge of tolerance between all the children of Abraham( pdu). No need to try and convert him to Islam or act as if he's lacking in faith because he's not Muslim. Jews were praying like this way prior to Islam , so show more acknowledgement. It doesn't take anything away from Islam to admit this. Jews and Muslims are two different and distinct nations , yet share many similarities because our God is One and the same. May Hashim/ Allah continue to bless and guide him in truth and righteousness.

Unlike us Jews, Muslims are not a nation but just members of a religion.
There is no shortage of Jews attempting to build "bridges" with Muslims. The big deal would be if they could do so with the hostile Muslims, chiefly Arab. Those Jews are naive since there's not much of a chance for that happening with such Muslims. A more realistic Jew, "Middle East American" (Yusuf Eliyah, Andrew Bridges) has become disillusioned from such attempts.
Anyway, I don't have problems where Muslims disrespect me underneath my uploads, because, unlike virtually all Jews, I do not allow antisemitism (including anti-Zionism) on my Channel (with one exception) and all comments must be pre-approved by me.
The only exception, so far, is a Muslim who filed a *false* copyright claim on my last upload.

Serving others with an open heart, which desires nothing in return (even from God), is one of the most common ways to be of service to the almighty.
Look into the eyes of another, see the creator.
Look into your own eyes, see the creator.
Seeing the infinite in all leads directly to compassionate service of the infinite.
If I know the infinite projects into this world through this body that I call “me,” and I know that the infinite projects into this world through the one I call, “you,” then I know that there is no “you,” and there is no, “me,” there is only, “we.”

We are different in that we have different names, different bodies, different origins in physical life, but we are the same as image bearers of the infinite creator of all. We are the same in essence as infinite energy in the form of ever ascending souls.
So when I see my other I see me, the real me, the self, the higher self, also within my other. Sometimes the individual has to be dug through to get deep enough but eventually, if you go deep enough, all are images of the infinite creator. All the same.

There are records in the Talmud that discuss how at the Beit Ha Mikdash despite numbers there was always adequate space for prostration.
Some groups still do so such as Mizrachiim and Karaites (i believe the latter are Jews regardless of others opinions).
Our brother gives an explanation of why many Jews stopped this, because there was a desire to distinguish from Islam which adopted this practice. However this concerns me because the practice in Judaism pre-exists this, so the decision to refrain seems flawed.
There is another explanation concerning idolatrous practice and a warning not to hew a stone and then prostrate before it. This one to me is a more acceptable reason. However during Yom Kippur they get around this by putting mats, grass or similar on the floor. So the question is why not at other times.
Also shouldnt intent be a consideration, if in your mind i am prostrating before the creator and not because of what is 'before me' then where is the issue?

@@kaycarter1540 The main reason for discontinuing prostration among Rabbinical Jews was the introduction of benches and chairs into the synagogues under Christinsane influence in Europe, which was carried further afield beyond Europe by both Sfaradi and Ashkenazi Jews.
But to any extent it stemmed from a desire to distinguish Judaism from Islam, it's a disgrace and travesty of the highest order -- to abandon a practice inherent to Judaism from the outset just because some other religion embraced it. However, I doubt this was a factor in discontinuing prostration, seeing as prostration had been prevalent in the Xtian denominations throughout the Near East and yet none of the rabbis discontinued prostration during those centuries.
The Rabbinical interpretation of the relevant part in Wayiqra 26:1 is incorrect. What it does state, properly translated, is "a decorated stone you are not to place in your land, to prostrate yourselves to it" (see "The Five Books of Moses" -- Vol. I of the Schoken Bible by Prof. Everett Fox). It follows that there is no transgression in prostrating upon any surface not covered by a mat, rug or carpet. Even if you insist that the relevant part of the verse means, actually, "a decorated stone you are not to place in your land, to prostrate yourselves on it", there's no danger of failing in an `Avairah, because the odds that some Jew would do that are nil.

I would say that if you don’t have a tradition you follow pray how you feel to pray. Fill it with the highest intention toward unity with the Infinite oneness and the connection will make itself.

      @lightleaker7045  Před 11 měsíci +3

I enjoy the length in prayers, especially the morning and evening prayers which are longer. The time of prayer is an obligation to some, a blessing and gift to all. I do not find it as much as an obligation as a gift from God. It is a time out and a realignment of my beingness.
The Hebrew word for “to pray,” as the infinitive, is “l’hitpalel.” This is a reflexive verb meaning, “begging the self.” The way to God is through the center of your being. When you pray you realign your way of being with your beingness, the only beingness that is, the infinite. This is what is meant by the teaching from pirkei avot that says, “do his will as if it is your will, so that he will do your will as if it is his.” This is alignment time, a break in the action of doing which gets us all crossed up, confused, angry, frustrated, and all that. It is a time for re-centering oneself through connection with the infinite beingness which is everything.
That said, you should see how long we pray on holidays! 😂

The order for prayer is in the Koran and hadith, and how to pray is in the hadith, I have many hadiths about how to pray, from purifying yourself before praying to things that Allah likes after we pray. In Jewish teaching a non Jew can wear a Tallit, provided that at least one of the four corners is rounded. The mitzvah (command) is for b’nei yisrael (children of Israel) to attach tzitzioth (twisted strings) to the four corners of the garment as a reminder of all the commandments. If a non-Jew were to wear a standard Tallit he would be keeping a command he were never commanded. A mitzvah given to b’nei yisrael. There is an uncertain disrespect which would follow, such as that which is termed “cultural appropriation.” I don’t prefer that phrase, generally, but it is ultimately applicable in this sense.
“Hear (with all your being) oh Israel (one who wrestles with God) Hashem (the name of God) your God, Hashem is one.”
God is infinity. No body, no image. The image maker projecting his essence through all images. There is no partner to infinity for everything finite is a product of infinity. This is good to remember, to meditate upon. Shalom shalom.

There is no confusion in the teachings of Christianity outside your mind. Misunderstanding the other does not mean that you are right. Among the founders of the first churches in Greater Syria, Greece, and Rome were Jews, Paul, Peter, Barnabas, and others, and these people used to prostrate. Adonai is like this man in the video, and Christian education is based on Jewish monotheism, but there is a special relationship between God the Father and the Son, when Christ referred to the verse in the symbol: The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for His feet,” in a prophecy about the Messiah. So he asked the Jews. How can you say he is his son when in the book David calls him his Lord?! They remained silent because they did not know the secrets of the Tanakh, including the Trinity. The One God, the Triune Persons. Please read Christian thought with detachment from old-fashioned myths manufactured based on false piety. It is not a lie or a deception or an escape from an accusation when we witness that God is one, but a Triune Persons.. Deconstruct the word Elohim and you will know!@@albionblue123

And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary confirming the law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light and confirmation of the law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear God.* (Sūra Ma’ida - 46)
*If only they had stood fast by the Law the Gospel and all the revelation that was sent to them from their Lord they would have enjoyed happiness from every side. There is from among them a party on the right course; but many of them follow a course that is evil.* (Sūra Ma’ida - 66)
*Then will God say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! recount my favour to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the holy spirit so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom the Law and the Gospel. And behold! thou makest out of clay as it were the figure of a bird by My leave and thou breathest into it and it becometh a bird by My leave and thou healest those born blind and the lepers by My leave. And behold! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou didst show them the Clear Signs and the unbelievers among them said: `This is nothing but evident magic’.* (Sūra Ma’ida - 110)
*“Those who follow the apostle the unlettered prophet whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures); in the law and the Gospel; for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil: he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him honour him help him and follow the light which is sent down with him it is they who will prosper.”* (Sūra A’rāf - 157)
*God hath purchased of the Believers Their persons and their goods; For theirs (in return) Is the Garden (of Paradise): They fight in His Cause, And slay and are slain: A promise binding on Him In Truth, through the Law, The Gospel, and the Qur-ān: And who is more faithful To his Covenant than God ? Then rejoice in the bargain Which ye have concluded: That is the achievement supreme.* (Sūra Tawba - 111)

*Muhammad is the Apostle Of God ; and those who are With him are strong Against Unbelievers, (but) Compassionate amongst each other. Thou wilt see them bow And prostrate themselves (In prayer), seeking Grace From God and (His) Good Pleasure. On their faces are their Marks, (being) the traces Of their prostration. This is their similitude In the Taurāt ; And their similitude In the Gospel is : Like a seed which sends Forth its blade, then Makes it strong ; it then Becomes thick, and it stands On its own stem, (filling) The sowers with wonder And delight. As a result, It fills the Unbelievers With rage at them. God has promised those Among them who believe And do righteous deeds Forgiveness, And a great Reward.* (Sūra Fatah - 29)
*Then, in their wake, We followed them up With (others of) Our apostles : We sent after them Jesus the son of Mary, And bestowed on him The Gospel ; and We ordained In the hearts of those Who followed him Compassion and Mercy. But the Monasticism Which they invented For themselves, We did not Prescribe for them : (We commanded) only The seeking for the Good Pleasure of God ; but that They did not foster As they should have done. Yet We bestowed, on those Among them who believed, Their (due) reward, but Many of them are Rebellious transgressors.* (Sūra Hadīd - 27)

There are several explanations for the meaning of the ban. Some people believe that it is forbidden to prostrate in this way because... this is similar to the custom of idolaters (Rambam, Avodah zara 6:6). Other halachic authorities believe that when a person sees someone bowing in this way, he may think that he is serving idols (Chinuch 349). Still others believe that the purpose of the prohibition is to emphasize the difference between prayer in the Temple and our prayer today (Rashi, Megillah 22 b).

Search “transliterated amidah,” and you will find many sources. Transliteration is the writing of Hebrew (or any language of another system) in phonetic form with Latin (English) letters. If translation is what you are seeking then “amidah translation” should. Do it. Chabad.org is a solid resource. There are many others but they pop to mind first.

This used to be in common practice but has been mostly abandoned, quite possibly since Islam began as an organized religion using prostration. The mitzvah of not learning from the neighbors was extended to abandoning the practice of prostration in Judaism. Temani/yemenite Jews still practice and Rambam taught hishtaHawa in Mishneh Torah.

@@lightleaker7045 And if that Rabbinic "Mtzvah" was a factor in this even to a minimal degree, it's a disgrace and travesty of the highest order -- to abandon a practice inherent to Judaism from the outset just because some other religion embraced it. Would Rabbinic Greats and Decisors agree to abandon what many in Judaism consider the Toraic commandment of not eating Gid Hanashe if some major religion incorporated it into its tenets as an important one? Thank goodness I'm not in Rabbinical Judaism anymore.
