Lol to James' anecdote which begins at 25:32 and ends with "I say that with the highest regard for grass".
I'm watching from Denmark here, so it's not "just for Americans" ;)
I really enjoy your show even though I just discovered it. But I think you do a good job and it's great to see other people who are passionate about tea and like to talk about it (and drinking it of course!)
So keep it up please. Especially the green tea parts ;)
Hi Nicolas,
Thanks for the comment and the kind words!
Cheers!
-James
I recently got obsessively into tea. You have the same problem.
Honestly, I can't believe you put in this much time for so few views but I'm glad you do. Thanks for the videos, they're great.
Haha. Thanks Russell.
We do these videos because we enjoy doing them and love tea. Any viewers we get are just a bonus :).
Cheers!
-James
Very cool.
Hi Astri, Thanks for the comment! I can't make any guarantees, but we might review a white jasmine tea in a couple months. It's not a typical drinker for us, hence its omission thus far.
Cheers!
-James
great show gents!
Cody Turner Thanks Cody!
where do you get your kyusu I broke mine and am looking for a well priced one please help me anyone please
I love this Chanel and all the wonderful tea information I get here. But seriously it’s a mindbender to get taught about Chinese tea from a jock white guy in a baseball cap 🧢. 🤣🤣🤣 I wish I wasn’t so stereotypical. I love tea and I love this channel. I just had to tell you my thoughts about Denny 🤣🤣🤣🤣💕💗 Is Denny single? He’s cute!
I think you meant fukamushi 深蒸し when you mentioned the “deep steamed” japanese green tea.
Besides that great video, thank you guys!
green and blacks in the morning, pu'erh and whites in the afternoon. And herbals in the evening, thats my current daily drinking.
I love Anhui green teas, Taipong hou kui, Lu an gua pian, Huang Shan Ma Feng are my 3 favourites.
@5:30 Matcha is OG tea. Powdered leaves like matcha is how all tea was consumed prior to the Ming dynasty when steeping the leaves became popular.
Not quite true, though this was the dominant method of consumption for a while in China. Tea has a long history (since 1000 BCE) of being boiled in a pot in Yunnan and Sichuan. Not to mention that tea has been eaten as a vegetable and tibetan butter tea precedes the Ming dynasty. There's a really interesting lecture series on Tea Drunk's YT channel about the history of tea consumption if you're interested.
I love the New Century Tea Gallery... truly legit place to get good green in the ID.
Good to see a video on green tea, don't really drink much of it but I really enjoy a nice fresh grassy tea. I normally strain my teas but its a hassle having it clog when making a Japanese tea because of the smaller leaves. Excited to see the video on Dragonwell since I have some that I've really been enjoying recently and it wouldn't hurt to learn a bit more about it.
Hi Tommy, thanks for the comment! I had the same problem as you. I'd recommend not straining Japanese teas, and either dumping the last bit or powering through! Even with the strainer on the Japanese teapots you definitely still end up with a bunch of little tea particles.
Cheers,
-James
One of my all time favourite chinese green tea is bi luo chun, the real deal with uniform tiny hairy teabuds, it tends to be very expensive but those little buds are so aromatic and really surprisingly strong. And I don't like smoky chinese greens. Anhui greens are also my cup, Lu an gua pian, tai ping hou kui, huang shan mao feng, I had good examples of these back in the days from tesspring, and hojotea. Zhu ye qing, Xu fu long ya, lu shan yun wu, an ji bai cha, these are also a must try.
I’m a Lu’an Gua Pian fan,any Gua Pian,actually.
That’s my preferred shade of green.
wish I had watched this last night. got a gaiwan 2 days ago and brewed oolong several times. last night brewed jasmine pearls same way I have oolong and it was so bitter I spit
Have you guys tried Seven Cups Tea house? They have some EXCELLENT tea that you might want to try out. One of my favorites. If you have any recommendations for getting tea, I would love to hear them too! Keep up the good work, and cheers!
Tea snob Thanks for the rec! They've been on my radar for a while, but man do I have a ton of tea to get through.
As far as recommendations, depends on what you're looking for. In our videos we cover alot of very decent teas. Sorry for the ambiguity but I hope it helps!
Cheers,
-James
Nice review, very informative. I really like your tea tray/table thing. What is it called, and where might I find something like that? Cheers
+carlsonx Thanks! You can find a tea tray on Yunnan Sourcing, ebay, or aliexpress.
Cheers!
-James
Love your channel. So far, sencha is my favorite. What are your favorites?
Hi +spcooper94 ,
I don't drink too much sencha anymore but have positive memories of DensTea, O-Cha, and Ippodo.
Cheers,
-James
These Tea Basics episodes are really helpful. Do you have any preferences for kyusu size when it comes to brewing for 1-2?
Maybe ~150ml. With Japanese green teas you can also go a bit bigger and just fill it 2/3rds or half. It'll seep out some heat as it steeps but that's not as important for green teas.
Where do you get the I guess display cup things that you have all of the different teas in? And where do you get your Japanese green teas?
We got this from Yunnan Sourcing.
Hi! Interesting video. I am wondering, could you include Jasmin tea in a video? I have been loving it for a while but I don't know anything about it...
you should go to China life tea house it's a CZcams channel and they have a video called types of tea
that comment is for you
Another great video! Can you please make a video on tea ware maintenance please? like how to clean various types of Kyusu (fukamushi, glazed, unglazed etc...) Can I use soap or not? etc... how to remove tea stains from porcelain cups/mugs? Thanks guys!
Hi rajTrondhjem10,
Thanks for the comment. That's a good idea. In general for teaware I handwash them all. Using soap for any non-glazed/porous teaware is not a good idea but other than that should be OK.
Cheers!
-James
Hi,
I really like your tea episodes. Just a couple of things.
I have read that you never pout hot water over the tea leaves. It erodes the delicate green tea leaves. Usually the green tea leaves are immersed in hot water. Is this true? Or is it true only for white tea?
Good question. For green teas, we're normally using cooler temperature anyways which should certainly help to prevent scalding the leaves.
Nice video guys! I happen to live in Seattle also and was wondering what shops you would recommend and what tea you would recommend from them! Thanks!
Hi MrMinerManSr. D ,
Good question. Frankly, I buy 99% online these days. One tea shop that I'm especially fond of is Floating Leaves in Ballard. They do have some great quality Taiwanese oolongs and Shiuwen knows her stuff.
Cheers,
-James
Thanks for the response! When I get back from my vacation I'm going to visit them for sure!
MrMinerManSr. D Let me know how you like em!
Will do! And if i Could bother you just a Little More i Was wondering Which online Tea shop u would recomend for High quality teas on a budget! Thanks!!!
MrMinerManSr. D Aha. You may've seen the recent interview but I'm partial to Yunnan Sourcing. They actually ship from Bend, OR with a $7 flat-rate.
If you're into pu'erh I'd have more recommendations, but YS has probably the widest array of teas for the most agreeable prices.
how much does the gaiwan & the cups roughly hold? (ml or oz)
seems like a good size for 2 persons!
Hi Art,
Thanks for the comment. Those gaiwans are both 100ml. Think the cups hold about ~30ml?
Cheers!
-James
Thanks James!
Would have thought those Gaiwans are even bigger :)
Best regards!
Art
Can you do a ceramic vs porcelain tea ware video?
It's not a bad suggestion, but I'm not sure if we have enough to say about it.
Tea DB maybe add it to another video idea I just want to know a bit about both types and if they change the taste, color, and or smell things of that nature
There are nuances to them, but it probably depends a lot on what ceramics were talking about. Porcelain should be pretty neutral overall.
Do you guys have any concerns about radiation in Japanese greens as a result of the Fukushima disaster? I am not that concerned, but I am also not an expert. (I am a fan of Japanese greens)
Hi magnatrope,
Thanks for the comment. Frankly, Denny and I hardly drink Japanese greens these days. I did do some research about a year ago and didn't come away particularly concerned.
Cheers!
-James
mansinthe marc i am drinking tea from uji right now.
Thanks man! Here's to more lovely Japanese greens!
Lol, "this show is for Americans"
this is exactly the minute I stopped watching their videos...
