And 56 days later he died. His good buddy Charlie Hodge was the one he looked to with a smile to his left. Charlie (or as Elvis called him --Cholly) probably gave him a nod and smile "You've got this man!" Earlier he looked to someone off camera to his right with a smile.

Elvis burned like a Roman Candle. He had more charisma and energy than anyone you know or name. I don't believe he was destined to live a long life. No one can exude the kind of energy and charisma he did and last for long. But while he was here, he gave so much. His presence flashes from the screen like vivid lightning.

Had just entered basic training in the Air Force and walked into the day room that evening and saw this concert. I began to tear up as I noticed immediately Elvis didn’t look well. Miles from home growing up with him I felt heartbroken and intuitively knew something was very wrong. On leave from the base for a few days in Portland Maine saw the banners of Elvis up and unbeknownst to me he was to perform the next evening. I felt in awe we both would be in the same city, at least, not having a ticket. Short lived though for as I entered the hotel I was staying in an elderly woman fell upon me and exclaimed Elvis had just died. I will never forget the shock I felt nor the fact I would never see him in this lifetime

First of all, great reaction! This is my first time on your channel … love it. I’m so glad you recognize he was ill. Very. So many people throw shade and make snide remarks about “fat Elvis,” or “drug-addict Elvis,” … but the Elvis in this video is neither of those. He is very ill. Look at the pictures from his last vacation in Hawaii in March, 1977. He does not look fat. And I know fat. I once weighed 290 lbs. and I’m only 4’8”. He does not look morbidly obese.
His daughter, Lisa Marie, was 9 years old when he died. I saw one of her interviews (as an adult) and she talked about how worried she was about her “daddy” and that his stomach had gotten huge. Even she, at 9 years old, knew he was sick.
As for his eyes watering and appearing “drugged,” Elvis had glaucoma, spent the better part of his life staring into blinding, glaring lights, and ….. he dyed his eyelashes black. Elvis’s hair was not black. It was a light-to-medium brown … he dyed it jet black when touring or starring in a movie. As a result, his eyes were irritated and watery the vast majority of the time from the dye. The sweat that poured off his face and into his eyes when he performed probably didn’t help matters any. Hence, the scarves. The scarves were born out of a need for him to have something readily available to wipe his eyes. I have a vivid memory of him doing just that with a red scarf during the Aloha From Hawaii concert.
So for all the haters (I’ve read some really rude comments on other reactions) … leave the man alone and let him Rest In Peace.
Oh. And one more thing. When Elvis glanced to his right and smiled, twice, he was engaging with the audience. When he looked to his left and smiled at Charlie Hodge, I think he was saying, “I’ve still got it!”

this was his last live performance, barely two months later he passed away. His father was present as well as his girlfriend at the time, possibly that was who he was smiling to on his right. I can never watch this video without tears, and I've watched it so many times. There is a longer version where he actually introduces his father, his girlfriend, each band member and his back up singers. Its almost as if he knew it would be his last time on a live stage. I feel the same way about this video as you mentioned, it was not unusual for Elvis to give everything he had to his audience but it always felt so effortless and carefree, this time it felt like it was painful and took all the strength he had to do it. And here I am, again in tears.. May you RIP Elvis

Kristin, I appreciate your desire to learn the history of Elvis. Not sure if you saw the footage a few seconds before he sat down at the piano, but it was blatantly obvious Elvis was not himself. Four and half decades later and even I still get emotional about his shortened life. Not only that, but he had died alone on his bathroom floor. he endured serious GI issues due to the gross amount of prescribed meds his personal doctors gave him. The king did not deserve to spend the last moments of his life with his face in a puddle of his own vomit. His fiancé found him about six hours later. By that time the white in his eyes were red and his skin color had started to change. A sad picture for someone who was beautiful both inside and out. He should have had a much longer and happier life with a peaceful ending, considering how much joy he brought to this world.

I remember watching a hospital nurse that was interviewed involving medical tests Elvis Presley had during the 1970s. They found a strange tumor on his liver (most likely caused by years of taking “uppers” to stay awake while in the US Army, and during long film shoots, and during long concert tours). His physician, Dr. Nicopolous, was a pill-pusher. In his last couple of years, he was trying to mix together different drugs in a desperate attempt to deal with his liver, but they had side effects on his intestines (inflamed bowels and severe constipation), kidneys, and heart. They also started to affect his cognitive abilities in the latter months of his life. Elvis Presley died in a bathroom at Graceland, of a heart attack while struggling to have a bowel movement.

    Hello from England
ELVIS died 2 days before my 12th birthday. I have been a FAN ever since.
Having watched lots of videos about ELVIS and his "backstory" they make me think so much more about the years that have passed by, even at the start of the live concerts in 1969/70 -50 + years OH MY. Such different times and different people
The many videos posted of Unchained Melody are just so hard to watch and OH YES I CRY BUCKETS. We are only human BUT ELVIS DUG SO DEEP during those last 12/18 months and HE WOULD HAVE NEVER QUIT. All he wanted was to entertain HIS FANS. To send them hope HAPPY and he achieved this in his short life.
We can all say WHAT IF or IF ONLY and hindsight is a wonderful word but i pick up on what Elvis said to the Press at MSG before the shows in 72 about the image and the man and also about being able to get good material. Good hard rock songs for everybody were becoming an issue but if he had them he would do them. He was not a songwriter.
About his health - ailments his mother had and genetics etc. Gladys used to take all sorts of pills, and i read somewhere ages ago she also took slimming pills and would give Elvis pills
Also the military would supply the soldiers with AMPHETAMINES to keep them awake and all sorts of the other stuff to help them. Elvis was probably used to them within the 2 years of the Draft
This was well known in the Vietnam War and WW2
The British Army was also doing the same
BUT I STILL LOVE ELVIS - Every song i love - he could have released an album of Nursery Rhymes and i would have loved them all

There are so many levels to Elvis...don't let this time period and negative comments/misinformation sway you. This is the same Elvis but with health problems that WERE NOT related directly to 'drug abuse' but congenital. If only people knew the circumstances concerning this concert in particular it would blow their minds....he kept evolving even though people just want to say 'he doesn't look good I can't watch'...that's a selective fan and shallow. The more you put the pieces together that is Elvis, the more it will make sense. PEACE!

Yes they were, all except his glaucoma in one eye.
Those last few years he was in hospital 6 times under the guise of exhaustion, trying to get him off the prescription drugs. He was his own worst enemy, at the end a full blown addict.
      So so very sad 😪
He had so much more to give ❤

After Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, the African American newspaper, the Chicago Defender explained that: “When Elvis Presley breathed his last breath and the press hailed him as the ‘King of Rock,’ Ol’ Man River cried out, ‘Naw he ain’t! My friend Chuck Berry is the King of Rock. Presley was merely a Prince who profited from the royal talent of a sovereign ruler vested with tremendous creativity. Had Berry been white, he could have rightly taken [Presley’s] throne and worn his crown well.’”

My grandparents went to several of Elvis's concerts in the turn of the 70's, and they remember when this special came out and it broke their hearts to see their favorite singer, actor in such a state barely able to breath, confused, I tried to show them this clip they made it about 10 seconds before they said shut it off, we don't want to remember him that way it hurts too much.

Maybe the most heartbreaking footage of Elvis ever. I remember my mother crying when they showed «Elvis In Concert» on TV. This footage was not in that TV-Special, but it is from the same, his last, tour. This goes to show how fast things can go really wrong. The only place he should have been in June 1977, was in hospital, not on stage performing. He was, mentally and physically, totally lost at this point, and his death was logical. The madness of it all is that he was preparing for a new, sold-out tour, starting August 17th, in Portland, Maine. In hindsight, what on earth were the people around him thinking..?

He was being worked like a donkey by Parker his manager, Parker was getting 50% of all Elvis's earnings and wasting it all on gambling, he was addicted and losing hundreds of thousands of dollars nightly.
Elvis did sack him earlier but found he couldn't cope without him, he later pleaded with Parker to take him back, hence the 50% of his earnings.
You could see he wasn't well here, for whatever reason.
If you have a connection to him, as millions of us have, called love, this hurts so much to watch, 42 years old, and a few weeks later he was dead. ❤

Kristin there's a huge amount of Elvis's life good and bad, on here and books.
If you've got time do look, I'm afraid it has been acknowledged now Elvis died of an overdose of prescription drugs he was addicted.
He had no life he was trapped inside Graceland and his touring. He didn't want to be Elvis Presley anymore and the life he had, this is where the rumours came from, that he was still alive.
A book was being published from members of his entourage the Memphis mafia who had been sacked by Vernon his father, telling what really happening with the prescription drugs etc, Elvis died a few days before the book came out. Make of that what you will.
I'm 74 now and discovered Elvis at the pictures when I was 14 in GI Blues, fell in love immediately and saw it 11 times in two weeks.
The most handsome man to walk this earth ❤

I get upset still to watch this, it doesn't get any better, his last performance and he was giving his all.
