    actually not a falsetto - Mitch is a counter tenor and has a naturally high singing voice - this is just a taste of what he can do.

      I think he does slip into falsetto on the hallelujah at the end of his verse, but yeah, for the rest of his verse Mitch is not using his falsetto. And he can go higher than he does in this song as well.

    Welcome to the Pentatonix journey. They sing many different genres. They do pop, emo, country, Christmas. You will get many suggestions from Pentatonix fans (Pentaholics). The members in order of singing are Scott( baritone- covers bass when bass singer has solo. Avi(original bass- left group I'm 2017. Kirstie (alto soprano). Mitch (tenor/counter tenor) the high pitch is his regular singing voice not a falsetto. You will see the more you watch. Finally is Kevin( beatboxer/tenor) he also plays the cello sometimes while beatboxing.

    Pentatonix is the best a capella group out there and they have a discography of over 200 songs...of all sorts of genres. They have both loads of covers and lots of originals. Kevin, the beatboxer does sing...he has a really nice tenor and great falsetto, but due to needing to beatbox most of the time, he rarely gets a spotlight. He does sing as backing vocals when not actively beatboxing, we just don't notice it much because the camera's not on him while he's backing the lead singer(s).
    That is NOT Mitch's falsetto. His falsetto is MUCH higher. Mitch Grassi is a natural countertenor and has a five octave range plus whistle notes. All the group have massive vocal ranges.
    Some suggestions for your reactions:
    When The Party's Over, Daft Punk medley, Love Again (original), New Rules/I Am That Somebody, I Rise (original), 90's Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson.

    That is one of the best Mitch-slaps I’ve seen in a while!
    I think the one you thought was familiar is Avi Kaplan. If you’ve seen Home Free do Ring of Fire, Avi was featured in it. Also, Kevin, the beatboxer, does sing and has a beautiful voice, but you’ll need to watch more videos to see that.
    Final note: Avi is no longer with the group, the current bass singer is Matt Sallee. That is the only change of group members. Mitch and Kirstie just change appearance a lot.

    Mitch has a falsetto, but you didn't hear it in this song. His is much, much higher. He is a counter tenor with a 6 to 7 octave range. In fact they all have very broad octave ranges. This is the most talented group you will ever hear. Their story, which is related in comments below, is inspiring.

      Jimmie, despite the videos you have seen, he does not have a 6-7 octave range - he cannot sing low notes as low as Avi, who is a basso profundo. The piano keyboard has a slightly less than 7 octave range - Mitch cannot sing that whole range. Low fry does not count. He is incredible but's let's not make him superhuman.@@SlayWithBrandy

    • @allendesalme197
      @allendesalme197 Před 9 měsíci

      Mitch's actual range is E2-Bflat5, not A1-B7 as Axel Fuentes claims - you cannot believe everything you see on YT and singing a low fry note is not, as they say, "musically viable"

    • @allendesalme197
      @allendesalme197 Před 9 měsíci

      Apparently Axl Rose has the widest demonstrated range in rock and Dimash Kudaibergen is right behind him. A guy named Tim Storms (I think) has the widest range ever and can apparently sing subsonic notes, although I can't figure who would care about that except for sound engineers and physicists.

    • @allendesalme197
      @allendesalme197 Před 9 měsíci

    • "The Prayer"
    • "Bohemian Rhapsody"

    The members of Pentatonix. In this video we have:
    • First verse: Tall blond guy, Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. In describing a man's vocal range, "lyric" means that the actual range exceeds the nominal range. In Scott's case, he sings everywhere from about the middle of a normal bass range through most of a normal tenor range. Probably five or six octaves. Scott typically takes over the bass harmony line when their bass has a solo.
    • Second verse: Bearded guy wearing a stocking cap, Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends to somewhere in the middle of a normal tenor range.
    • Third verse: The only woman in Pentatonix, Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado. Kirstie sings everywhere from a low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest female range. And she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an alto soprano.
    • Fourth verse: Guy wearing a wide-brimmed hat, Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor. No one is certain whether Mitch can sing higher than Kirstie or Kirstie can sing higher than Mitch; I suspect that it varies from day to day, though everyone agrees that Kirstie has better whistle notes. Mitch is known for his ethereally beautiful (some say "angelic") high vocals. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, has said Mitch has "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." Mitch switches seamlessly from chest voice to mixed voice to head voice. He has a range of just over six octaves. And we call that stunned look people get the first time they realize that the beautiful high voice is coming from a man, "being Mitch slapped." You've just been Mitch slapped. Don't let it worry you; it's happened to all of us, generally more than once, because Mitch is full of surprises. (BTW, Mitch wasn't singing falsetto in this; I think he was in mixed voice.)
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix (PTX for short) is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth) beatboxer extraordinaire. There may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. We don't get to hear Kevin sing as often as we'd like because he's generally too busy being the entire percussion section, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally descends to the uppermost reaches of a baritone range. He's also known for the beauty of his falsetto, which may go higher than Mitch can. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. When he was a teenager he performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on the saxophone and once on the cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, which he refers to as "celloboxing." He has a pre-med degree from Yale and had already been accepted to Yale Medical School when he gave up his dream of becoming a surgeon to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician instead. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs the whole planet seems like a brighter place.
    In 2017 Avi decided to leave Pentatonix, for personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career, and I strongly recommend subscribing to his CZcams channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
    Avi's replacement joined in either late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it); you'll see him in a lot of their videos:
    • The second black member of Pentatonix is Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. Matt's range seems to be growing on a daily basis right now. He isn't QUITE down to basso profundo yet, though I expect him to reach it within a year or two. But on his high end Matt reaches nearly the top of a normal tenor range; he may be able to sing higher than Scott! To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their recent world tour. You can find one here: czcams.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/video.html Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away.

    Much of the PTX catalogue is covers (as that is how they started) but they have had two full albums of originals, plus a number of originals. An interesting pairing would be their Grammy-winning "Daft Punk" (a mashup of seven Daft Punk songs), followed by their original song "Love Again", which has the same feel and aesthetic, with a lot more effort and money put into makeup and wardrobe.

    Where Pentatonix came from:
    Kirstie, Mitch, and Scott all grew up in Arlington, Texas. All of them were involved with community musical theater as children, and Mitch met both Scott and Kirstie there (separately) when he was nine or ten years old, and became friends with both of them. However, Scott and Kirstie didn't meet each other until they were fourteen and in the same high school class. All three were choir geeks (duh), and they quickly became best friends in high school.
    There was some kind of singing contest to meet the stars of _Glee,_ and the three of them wanted to enter, so they formed a trio which they named "The Trio." (I know; not very imaginative. They're somewhat better with that now.) They lost the contest, but they kept The Trio together anyway; they performed at school functions and occasionally on local television. And pentaholics (Pentatonix fans) still refer to these three as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix.
    Kirstie and Scott were a year ahead of Mitch; they graduated in 2010, when Mitch was just finishing eleventh grade, and both went away for their freshman year of college. Scott went to the University of Southern Califonia, and Kirstie went to the University of Oklahoma with a full ride scholarship.
    Scott is a very outgoing person, so he immediately began looking around for extracurricular activities where he could meet people and make new friends, and he found an award-winning a cappella group named SoCal VoCals, which he joined. While there he met Ben Bram, who at the time was a coach on NBC's a cappella competition show named _"The Sing-Off."_ A cappella groups would audition for the show, and those that passed appeared throughout the season. There was a panel of three judges, all professional musicians, who would give their reactions to each performance. Along the way some groups would be eliminated, narrowing the field, and at the end of the season viewers would be invited to vote on a winner. The winning group would receive $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the show's sponsor.
    Scott was intrigued. He thought The Trio could be competitive, and if they could get a recording contract they could have a career doing what they most loved, with the people they most loved. So he talked to Kirstie, who thought his idea had promise, and at the end of their first year of college the two of them headed back to Arlington to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk with Mitch about Scott's idea.
    Meanwhile, back in Arlington Mitch had been having a very difficult year. His best friends weren't there, and as an out-of-the-closet young gay man with an unusually high voice he was being seriously bullied. And unfortunately, since the bullying was ostensibly for his voice he was quickly developing the notion that there was something wrong with his voice and that no one would want to hear him sing. So when Scott presented his idea Mitch was on board; it was a way to get away from the bullies. He had doubts about his ability to carry his weight in the group, because of the bullying, but he was willing to try and if Scott and Kirstie said they could win, well, maybe they could.
    So with everyone on board, Scott called Ben Bram to find out how to arrange for an audition, and this is where they met their first setback. _The Sing-Off_ had a size limit on bands; the minimum size allowed was five members. The Trio needed two new members and a new name. They were stumped.
    Ben suggested that they'd profit from adding a rhythm section: a bass and a beatboxer, and he knew the perfect person to recommend for the bass, a guy named Avi Kaplan. They talked to Avi, and he was very interested, so that took care of the bass, but where to find the beatboxer? Ben didn't have any suggestions. So in desperation they typed "beatboxer" into a CZcams search box and the first hit they got was a black guy playing a classical piece on the cello and beatboxing at the same time. And all of them said, "Wow! He's the one! How can we get in touch with him?"
    They were in luck. At the time CZcams had something called CZcams messages, which would allow private messages between members (now discontinued), so they sent Kevin a private message: "Hey! We really love your stuff, and we wonder if you'd be interested in flying across the country to join four strangers to audition for an a cappella competition show on television?" And Kevin messaged them back: "Normally I'd be there in a heart beat; I love a cappella and have been in a cappella groups before. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my pre-med degree from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite; better keep looking. So they kept looking, and they found someone, but he was no Kevin Olusola. Oh well; you work with what you have.
    And two weeks later Kevin messaged them again: "Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." He arrived the day before their audition. Mitch had to skip his graduation ceremony to attend the audition. But even with just a day of rehearsal they still passed the audition; they were in.
    Oh, yes, the name. Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just as Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancier way of saying they're "The Quintet." 😂
    Pentatonix appeared throughout season three of _The Sing-Off,_ and eventually won. All those performances are available on CZcams and are well worth watching, preferably in order so you can see how they grew throughout the season. Some of them are as good as anything they've done since (which is saying a lot) and are only available in those old videos.
    So, they'd won _The Sing-Off,_ complete with recording contract. Time to move to California permanently and begin recording. And a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella. But at this point Pentatonix weren't willing to give up; they WANTED that career they'd been working toward. So they pooled their winnings and lived frugally. The four men shared two apartments, to cut down on expenses. They used their iPhones to record themselves anywhere they could find good acoustics, and sometimes in places with acoustics that were just okay. And they posted to CZcams. Their fans from _The Sing-Off_ quickly found them there, and subscribed, and they began to get more views and more subscribers, and to pick up a few patrons. In fact, they were going viral. And Sony noticed, and approached them with an offer: Perhaps Pentatonix would like a recording contract with Madison Gate, another minor subsidiary? Hmmm. Would they like a recording contract? Darn right they'd like a recording contract!
    And then came "Daft Punk Medley," and Pentatonix won their first Grammy. And again, Sony took notice, and approached Pentatonix: "We've been thinking about it and we believe you might find a better fit with our flagship label, RCA. Are you interested?" They've been with RCA ever since. They go on tours world wide and perform to sold-out venues. They put out at LEAST one album a year, frequently more. One has gone Gold and one has gone Platinum twice. They have three Grammys and recently received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

    Pentatonix is the type of band, where you hear something different every time you listen to a song. One thing that I heard on the twentieth time hearing this song, was the harmonic produced during the wall of sound at the end. It’s a note produced by the combination of voice in perfect pitch, at 493.88 hz (Bmajor) It’s the frequency of the Big Bang. It was only possible because I listened through some obscenely expensive headphones on a demo. Check out the Sennheiser 800, you won’t believe the difference.

    They experiment with string instruments occasionally, but they are probably 95% acapella. The person who didn't sing, Kevin, does beat boxing, body percussion, and plays cello.
    If you are trying to grow your channel, Pentatonix reactions will do the trick.

    Just so you know, the face people make when they hear Mitch (in the hat), is called a Mitch slap (Sort of like a bitch slap, just nicely said) As others have said, that wasn't falsetto, he can actually sing higher than most soprano's. He can actually go higher than Celine Dion, and Idina Menzel (sang Let It Go from Frozen). He has a 6.5 octave range, mostly the higher notes. I'm gonna sub for more PTX, I really think you will like them. Next try The Prayer, If this amazed you, that will blow your mind. You won't regret it. It's a cover of a Celine Dion and Andre Bouchalli song.

    Thank for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix video. "Hallelujah" is not a Christmas song, not even a religious song. It is about love gone wrong, betrayal, lust, etc. Religious references were used to spotlight betrayal, etc. Pentatonix always put non-Christmas songs on their Christmas albums. It's a song for any time of year.

  • @danielcarter837
    @danielcarter837 Před 9 měsíci +4

    You might like to react to something seasonal from them. They do a great rendition of Making Christmas from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I think it is their best video.
    Kevin can sing. He has a beautiful tenor voice. He is usually too busy beatboxing. When they go five part harmony it is special.
    To Pentaholics it is Christmas everyday especially when they sing a Christmas song. They have five EPs two original CDs and at least seven Christmas albums.
    They can sing any song, any style any genre. They sometimes sing different styles in the same song.
    Three Grammys, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, world tours, 12 years and well over 200 songs to listen too.
    It is a very wide and deep rabbit hole.

    So Mitch is actually a counter tenor, a male position that can, without falsetto, go higher than a female soprano. Its INCREDIBLY rare, and used to be something that unik singers were known for to an extent. Meanwhile Avi (beard and long hair) is a Super Bass, able to sing in subharmonics. Aka below the standard singing scales. Kevin (whom some think is actually an alien recording machine in disguise) is the beatboxer that has fooled more professionals than i can count. Kirsty (if you like her you are a Kirsty Thirsty haha, its okay, we all are haha) has a magnificent range that fits any genre. And Scott (blonde guy who started the song) has a great range, but generally prefers to use his voice to compliment another person in the group rather than grab attention. Later on Avi left the group due to family reasons (on good terms) and you will meet a new member he personally brought in at that time.

  • @DougRayPhillips
    @DougRayPhillips Před 9 měsíci

    The beatboxer, Kevin Olusola, occasionally sings with them. You can hear him on "Mary Did You Know" and "Amazing Grace." Kevin also occasionally plays cello in their vids, and sometimes they bring in Lindsey Stirling as a guest on violin. Their songs are pure acapella, unless you can see an instrument onscreen.
    You can check out Kevin on his solo YT channel, doing some amazing stuff. Try "Down."
    The bass is Avi Kaplan. He's since gone solo, so you may have seen his work. He was replaced by Matt Sallee.
    PTX has two live versions of this song on their channel. An older one with Avi, and a newer one with Matt. If you watch the older one, which was recorded about the same time as this studio version, you can see that they don't depend a whole lot on postpro to create their sound. They're really that good.

  • @lesaahrenstein6360
    @lesaahrenstein6360 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Because Mitch is a counter tenor that means he can sing even Higher than a tenor. I I don't think he ever goes into falsetto but I could be completely wrong on that. Shortly before he passed, Leonard Cohen, the gentleman who wrote the song, heard Pentatonix
    Cover of his song that he had ever heard. Even though it appears on their Christmas album the song has no connection to Christmas. Please go down this rabbit hole you will not be disappointed. The more reactions you do a pentatonics the more the fans Will flock to your channel.

    Pentatonix is one of my favorite groups. The only acapella group I follow at all. You asked for suggestions for other songs of theirs to check out. They mainly do cover songs, but they do an excellent job of them. I would check out Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence. You can't go wrong with either of them. Those two songs should give you a fair sampling of what they are about.

  • @ConnorSinclairCavin
    @ConnorSinclairCavin Před 9 měsíci

    So they mostly do covers or medleys, although there are some exceptions. I would recommend “say something” “bohemian rhapsody” “daft punk” “the prayer” “90s music medley” and “mary did you know” as a good ‘starter’s pack’ from there you can branch into whatever else interests you. There are pretty much no duds to come from them. And keep in mind EVERY sound is their raw, unfiltered voice(ONLY exception is guest musicians or when kevin plays his instrument in some later songs, even the microphone in BR was not powered, thats just Mitch, giving us Mitch Slaps…). They choose locations for the acoustics and can redo any song on the fly. Its amazing. They do a lot of “churchy” songs due to the culture around occapella, but thats okay because they make them beautiful, they also do a lot of pop genre.

For more recent work that makes a contrast to this one, try the very upbeat and lively 90s Dance Medley and their originals Happy Now and Love Me When I Don't. Pentatonix released "Hhallelujah" on a Christmas album; that doesn't make it a Christmas song. They have a habit of putting some songs that aren't really Christmas songs on their Christmas albums. This is fair, since most pentaholics tend to listen to their Christmas music year-round anyway.
    In fact, "Hallelujah" isn't even a religious song, though it references a couple of stories from the Old Testament (David and Bathsheba, and Samson and Delilah). It's about love gone wrong, and that happens all the time to ordinary people of all religions, or no religion at all.
