When it comes to their original songs, "Love Again" is a must (Mitch (high voice) loves EDM, and this is their take on it. Keep in mind, there are no instruments). Another original you should check out is "Run to You". Their voices harmonize together so beautifully (no beatboxing in this one). Also, their cover of " Say Something" is stunning. And for real treat, you have to check out their jaw dropping cover of "Gold" by Kiiara .The PTX rabbit hole is 12+ years deep, and you are likely to find an original or cover to fit your every mood. And when it comes to the holidays, Pentatonix basically owns Christmas. Trust me, this isn't your usual take on any of these songs. Even people that don't like most Christmas music are in for a treat. 🙂

Kevin, the beatboxer, is also pre-med and plays the cello, as well as sings like an angel. The more you watch them, the more you know this group. They are all so talented that it's crazy. They won a Grammy for this song. And total have 3 Grammy. As well as a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. The only acapella group to do this.
Okay, time for a bit of backstory. You know about the origin of Pentatonix, right? About how they won season 3 of _The Sing-Off_ (2011) with a first prize of $200,000 and a recording contract?
Well, that recording contract was with Epic Records, a minor subsidiary of Sony, who sponsored _The Sing-Off._ So immediately after winning the contract all the members of Pentatonix moved to California in preparation for recording their music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella music.
But at this point Pentatonix was totally invested in staying together and making a career for themselves doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. They weren't about to give up just because some short-sighted recording executives said there was no future in their music. So they came up with Plan B.
They pooled their winnings, using the $200,000 as seed money. They lived frugally. The men shared two apartments, to cut down on rent. They arranged music and rehearsed every day. And whenever they had a song ready they'd record it on their iPhones and post it to CZcams.
It didn't take long for their fans from _The Sing-Off_ to find their channel and subscribe, and even then pentaholics were enthusiastic, so they spread the word around. And some of them became patrons. And Pentatonix started going viral. And someone at Sony sat up and took notice.
"Hey, Pentatonix! Here at Sony we've concluded that Epic made a big mistake when they canceled your contract. But we have another subsidiary, named Madison Gate. Would you be interested in a contract with them?" Darn right Pentatonix was interested!
It wasn't a terribly good contract; Madison Gate specialized in movie soundtracks, so they couldn't provide Pentatonix with a recording studio, for instance. But they could and did get a company named FifGen Films to record videos for Pentatonix, and they published albums, and albums bring in money. It was a start.
"Daft Punk Medley" was released on PTX Volume II, their second album, in 2013. And in 2014 it won them their first Grammy. And someone at Sony said, "Wait a minute! We got a Grammy from MADISON GATE?! Madison Gate publishes film soundtracks, not Grammy winners! What's going on here?"
Eventually they figured it out, and they heard Scott's acceptance speech from the Grammys, where he said that the budget had been $400, much of which went for makeup and a single ring light, and that the audio had been recorded in a closet (it had good acoustics). Hmmm. Think what they could have done with a proper recording studio and a decent budget.
"Hey, Pentatonix. Congratulations on the Grammy! We've been thinking some more, and we've concluded that you might find a better fit with our flagship company, RCA. What do you think?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since.

Have you noticed how many young people have never seen _"The Wizard of Oz,"_ with Judy Garland? When recommending "Wizard of Ahhhs" you need to mention that if they've never seen the movie it won't make sense. I swear, the next time I hear a reactor say "Wait! Where did the Oompa Loompas come from?!" during the Lollipop Guild scene I'm likely to scream.

I'm pretty new to PTX, like just a year into finding them and I can tell you that the PTX community are a great community and they love new reactors no matter how new they are to finding them. If you do watch any other a capella groups, I feel that PTX is the reason why they get the recognition they deserve. PTX really brought a capella to the fore front. If you can, check out live versions of these songs to see that they aren't fixed in anyway in post production. Check out their Evolution songs. You will really enjoy them.
If you want to see Kevin (the beat boxer) shine, ‘Sing’ is the next song for you. It’s an original by the way.
If you want to hear Kevin (beatboxer) sing, check out Mary Did You Know and Amazing Grace or some of his solo stuff.

Amen to that. I still think their cover of Royals by Lorde is one of the best songs they have done.
Other acapella groups for you to check out: Home Free (you might start with their "Man of Constant Sorrow" cover) and VoicePlay (The Oogie Boogie Song cover, or "Hoist The Colors", "My Mother Told Me", or "Valhalla Calling"). A lot of acapella goodness with these groups!

One reactor, a music teacher, said once that they get out of each other's way. When they're singing together, no one of them tries to overshadow the others. And, as you say, their harmony is perfect.
I recently heard a professional musician describing people as having lead voices or backing voices. Highly talented singers like these can use either at will.
Poor Avi - his eyes were so red from the contacts (Avi pronounced Ah-Vee, is the low bass singer), and Kevin couldn't even wear the contacts so they stuck a visor on him! They filmed this in their closet and recorded it in their kitchen - aside from the fee from arranging it (can't remember the place who did it for them) but beside that it cost them only 200 dollars and they won a Grammy for it. They have two other songs that have won a grammy and they are the first acapella group to have a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Jolene w/Dolly Parton, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy are their other two grammy award winning songs. If you like this one I would suggest 'Love Again', it's another EDM track and it is an original. They also do a lot of cool 'Evolution of' stuff (Evolution of Music, Michael Jackson, Arianna Grande, Beyonce, Rhianna) Those are all one takes...they do a few go's and choose the best of them, they are the absolute Masters of transitions and mash ups!!

I'm sure the help with arranging was Ben Bram. He helped them, and I'm sure other groups, on The Sing Off. Scott already knew him from USC.
"Arranging" is what the group and Ben Bram do. Fifgen edited the video and I assume Ed Boyer did the sound mixing - like Ben Bram, he's been with them from the beginning.

I just subbed. I look forward to more Pentatonix (PTX) reactions!!!!! Believe it!!! Mitch's voice! You've only just begun. If you want to hear what he can do, react to the Lion King song "Can't You Feel the Love Tonight" they covered. Amazing! Let me introduce them to you, so when you comment on their voices you can say their names. Kevin is the beat boxer, Avi(AH-vee) is the bass (black beard), Scott is the baritone (white hair that is usually blonde), Kirstie is the Mezzo Soprano (the female) and of course, Mitch is the tenor (especially high at that). Just a suggestion, If you have trouble remembering their names, and this is true for any reaction to any band, make a cheat sheet with their pix and names. You'll learn them quickly that way. I enjoyed your reaction to this. You mentioned that you aren't familiar with a capella music. There are two other GREAT a capella groups out there with a lot of cross-over Pentatonix fans (Pentaholics). First, since you seem to be a Disney fan, check out Voiceplay and their cover of We Don't Talk About Bruno (official video) from their channel here on CZcams. They are much more theatrical than Pentatonix typically are in most of their videos. Next, check out Home Free - their cover of O Brother Where Art Thou (from their official CZcams channel) is a great introduction. Home Free tends more toward country, but they cover all genres. Again, a very different sound than Pentatonix.
You can't go wrong with any of these three groups. They are all great and all have huge fan bases for good reason. Pentatonix seems to be the most commercially successful of the three, in large part because of their Christmas music and also because they were the first a capella group to really hit it big in recent years.
Home Free did a cover of the song "Man of Constant Sorrow" that was written in the 1930's and has been covered by many artists over the years, but was best known for being in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou".

I'm sure others will hit on this, but anyway. They had lost their recording contract because of the company was bought out, and the new company didn't think accepella was worth doing (they did come back a few years later and re-signed them. Anyway, being broke and just getting started, they spent their last $400, and made a deal with a brand-new post/editing company, (The company would do this one free, and PTX would use them exclusively for so long, and would list them as the Post company as
as much as possible) then they went to Avi and Kevin's apartment, each one went in a closet by themselves, and recorded their vocals, then they hung blackout curtains in either the kitchen or a bedroom I've heard both from reliable sources, and recorded the visuals, and then did post on Avi's iPad, which is what they recorded everything on. Put it on YT and won a Grammy. There is some debate over exactly what it cost, and where it happened, etc... I may not be right on everything, so if you hear something better go with it, this is just what I"ve heard, as I said reliable sources, people that were either there, or personally know the members.

I enjoyed your reaction and you won't be disappointed with anything you choose from PTX. Kevin does a lot more in Hallelujah than the official video shows. If you're interested, check out the live version from their 2016 Christmas special and you'll get a much better view of him doing his thing. If you want to see him cello-box, I'd recommend Shallow or Say Something.
You don't hear this kind of music nowadays it's kind of refreshing!
They have another EDM song from the same genius level EP called PTX Volume II. It was written by them and it is called Love Again. It is probably better than this song and you will not believe it is acapella. They are so good early.
If you think they use a lot of studio tricks to achieve their sound listen to this song sung in a backstage type room for a Make a Wish. It is recorded on a phone. Nearly all of their early music is just balanced and reverb is added. They are just truly that good and we are lucky to be able to hear them.
Mitch's voice is that of a CONTRA-TENOR! The male version of a SOPRANO!

There are currently three main American acapella groups, all excellent. To get a taste of the other two, I recommend:
* _Many of Constant Sorrow_ by Home Free
* _We Don't Talk About Bruno_ by VoicePlay
All three groups have their own CZcams channels and large catalogs of music. There are dozens of other songs I could have listed, but this will get you into enough trouble, stretching you through multiple rabbit holes simultaneously. Good luck!

Within these three groups, totaling 15 people, at least 8 of them also do fabulous solo work and work with other singers and musicians. All...magical! Also, have you discovered Dimash? I’ll second the recommendation to try Home Free and/or VoicePlay. They are the other two “big time” modern a capella groups. Home Free does more country-type songs, while VoicePlay does more show tunes and music from movies (although both tackle Xmas music and covers of pop songs as well).
