- Jumpluff! The Cottonweed Pokemon! Jumpluff is pretty fast and it has a lot of utility but is it enough for competitive Pokemon? Join False Swipe Gaming in this brief overview of Jumpluff in competitive Pokemon!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: We missed an important placing for Jumpluff in the video for VGC 2016. We deeply apologize for this.
Jumpluff took 1st place at the German VGC 2016 Nationals on Arash Ommati's team. Jumpluff proved to be a great partner with Primal Groudon thanks to Chlorophyll and its support moves of encore, protect, sleep powder, and helping hand. It can outspeed many common threats and put them to sleep or provide a power boost with helping hand.

DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Thank you to reddit user Bardock_RD for bringing it up.
False Swipe Gaming good to see you have a good day thanks for the video
Torterra next please
If you don't then whateverever I don't even care. I will still support you dude going to watch another later.
I was just gonna mention that, really unfortunate you managed to miss it in the actual video
Every first episode of the month I just wonder "what kind of crazy drug are the patrons on with these picks" but this time around I actually like this Pokemon lol

“Pokémon does weird stuff to your brain”
Yeah. Like how it makes me buy every single one of its games.
More like 2+ games for the yellow, emerald, platinum etc, then another console for shiny hunting.
And you fell for their trap >:)
Honestly though
sleeb damn Nintendo sure has some good marketing
Whats wrong with Gardevoir fans huh?
I dont care how good or bad Jumpluff is, its so freaking cute and unique and its shiny form is Pink! Lmao. I love you Jumpluff.
I'm going to save this comment for when you turn 30.
@@drax1s729 Hi, im 30+ and I still love that cute little cotton ball. This and the larvitar line are my gen 2 favourites since its release.
It’s liek my good boi! A smol blue bol with red eyes
Ha
@@drax1s729 sorry for that, man.
Y r u gae
I've always loved pokemon like Jumpluff. I think this video underrepresented how good it was ACTUALLY - it's hard to judge with something like Jumpluff how 'good' it is based solely on usage because it's just the kind of pokemon not many people will use, but when it was used it was generally used to great effect (as evidenced by it showing up in basically every tier even when it was placed in a low tier). Very very few pokemon can pull off a full support moveset and be considered worth a team slot, that alone is pretty impressive without even considering the level of prediction required to make it work.
The problem is not that it's bad perse but more that the standard metagame has no room for the things it offers.
I can’t speak for VGC doubles because I don’t play that but it’s def a good Pokémon in singles OU GEN 7. Matchups are one sided , good and bad.
A pokemon is good based on usage tho
What do you think OU,UU,RU,NU, means
@O K then explain this
Why was gen 3 camerupt in UU even though it has a very good was to be used in OU
@@coldore6734 same reason shedinja was an Uber killer for 3 gens, it just had a decent enough niche that fit to the play style at that moment. It could be awful and good at the same time.

How GOOD was SPIKES ACTUALLY? - History of SPIKES in Competitive Pokemon (Gens 2-6)
Please yes.
marcelo js “In gen four It got HUGE competition from stealth rocks”
This would actually be fun to watch
"Daddy Groudon."
I like this.
Fluffy Phoenix your profile 🤗😘😍
What are you doing Step Groudon?~
I had no freaking clue what this was a response to when I saw it in the preview. This is great.
Don't forget "topping him off".
@@_V.Va_ poor choice of words
This video helped me realize how adorable Jumpluff is and how interesting it’s strategy can be.
How good was Politoed actually? It'd be fun to see how much one ability let it soar and have a reign of dominating the tier.
AngryRedJuiceBox already done bb
Charlotte Buchanan oh fuck yeah you right my bad.
People in a decade are gonna found out about competitive gen5 Pokemon and marvel about how Politoed went from that odd guy in your family to the basis of a metagame religion.
"Politoed...fucking Politoed!"
*rain*
t'was a joke
Me and my entire family are in Florida. They’re on the beach in the water, I’m watching an internet video about a dandelion fluff monster
As someone from Florida, trust me, you're not missing anything...
You should at least be down there during sunset though. That's nice.
I am in Moscow and was watching this video in the underground when all the happy football (erm, soccer) fans were returning from the match. 😅
I’m on the beach watching this 😆
I'm pooping right now
@@turntsnaco824 it's such a pleasure to finally meet you Mr. Snaco. How's Arin been?
I feel Prankster should have been one of its abilities, making its status so much more powerful. Yes Chlorophyll is decent, but these days its a gimmick more than a useful ability
Prankster sleep powder
The most funny thing is that drayano and alphexcub Gave this ability to him in Pokemon Blaze Black 2 Redux
If jumpluff ever got spore it would instantly reach OU. It might even knock amoongus down a peg, since sleep before the opponent acts is always better than sleep after it
the benefit of slower sleep is that the sleep turn/counter doesn't burn on the moment you induce sleep this way.
if you do a fast sleep, the sleep counter is already burned by 1, meaning there's now a chance the sleeping mon could wake up next turn.
Each sleep burn increases the wake up chance by 25%, so that's why sometimes it's better for a sleep inducer to go last if they want their sweeper to setup or to pivot in an advantage mon.
How Good Was Gen 1 Mechanics Part 3 ACTUALLY?
Yes please, I've been waiting for that, and the continuation of the history of each type in competitive gaming
More how broken they were
Let's just put it this way. It took four generations to perfect those experimentally broken Gen 1 mechanics. Generation's 5 and up are all about balancing the Pokemon over the mechanics.
TheNorth15 yeah essentially
Gen 1 broken mechanics
Gen 2 special stat split
Gen 3 better ev and iv system
Gen 4 physical special move split
Mechanics since then have stayed somewhat consistent with general balancing changes like weather from gen 5 to 6 and new additions like mega evolutions and z moves
Personally I like Generation 5 the best. Almost all of the new Pokemon evolution lines are competitively-viable and unique it's own right that today Gen 5 still dominates heavily in the meta while also re-balancing past classic Pokemon.
How good was WEEZING actually ? I WILL NEVER GIVE UP !
Don't give up, I've got your back bro #HowgoodwasWeezing
He has a vid over weezing already
THIEN NGUYEN no he doesn't
Don't ever give up.
Tj's Channel Thing I won’t. Thanks for the support !
Some Pokémon probably deserve a re-do more than Jumpluff, but I'd really love to see one. This thing is a monster in the lower tiers and, of course, it always had some random niche in OU until Gen 6 came around.
Wtf Parasect?
How GOOD was Parasect actually?
That's an easy one:It just outright sucks, to the point of why does it even exist.
King Sora2XXX But did you see this video?
Yeah. Well, really, all of them. I'm not an competitive player myself, but I do like watching these videos.
Parasect can counter Kyogre xD
@@groudonvert7286 Not really
How GOOD was SHEDINJA/ MEW ACTUALLY?!?!?! I wont give up.
And before people say Shedinja is bad, he still has a vid on Dunsparce. We already knew it was bad, but he still did a vid on it.
Except did you see the dunsparce video's publish date?
S*** that was awile ago. BUT he still did a vid.
Kalkaskan Gamer yes we need shedinja
Kalkaskan Gamer thing is dunsparce doesnt die when Hippodown Tyranitar or any pokemon with sandstorm ability... or attack comes out on the battle field... or light a match...
How about the other side of the spectrum? How good was NINJASK actually?
Here's a great one. Not one of those super pandery analyses of Pokemon that we already know are broken, it's an actually informative look at a Pokemon you wouldn't expect.
okay
How Good was Electabuzz/Electivire Actually?
BlazetheCat130 This needs way more likes
it sucked
saved you a 15 minute video
Yeah it sucked, just like you Clayton Griffin.. fuck off, you damn nerd.
i mean it did suck
it's been bottom tier since gen 4 where it was OU once
Dencent
Damn, the production value here is through the roof! Thanks for covering my favorite Pokemon.
Must do it!
How GOOD was Electabuzz & Electivire ACTUALLY?
IAmWeavile you are correct
IAmWeavile yup
I've been waiting for this for so long!
How GOOD was Kangaskhan ACTUALLY??
Zoares Zeta yeah!!!! 😍😍😍😍😉
It sucked till it got a mega then it was broken
Zoares Zeta That's a funny way of spelling Mega Kangaskhan.
A brief overview of Kangaskhan
Gen 1: Decent at best
Gen 2: It would be better to use Hitmontpp
Gen 3: It would be better to use Hariyama
Gen 4: It would be better to use Infernape
Gen 5: It would be better to use Scrafty
Gen 6: Mega, boot to Uber
Gen 7: Mega, still Uber
Jumpluff is like one of my favorite pokemon since gen 2, so I was pleasantly surprised to see this video!
I'd like to see you review Hitmontop at some point
This set is fun in battle spot singles:
252 def, sp def 4 hp
Ability: Infiltrator
Cotton guard
Amnesia
Strength sap/synthesis (your prefrence)
Infestation
And 1 taunt and your are forced to switch
_110 Speed Infiltrator Spore_
If not for sleep clause... That would be far too overpowered
If not for sleep clause, alot of pokemon would be op. Same with Evasion clause. Every pokemon would run sleep talk and every pokemon would run moves like swift...
there should really be no sleep or evasion clause since both have plenty of good counters especially evasion.
Sora4440 foresight and odor sleuth would also end up being core moves
Pipper The Vaporeon Don't be an idiot. The only good move that checks accuracy is Smart Strike. Evasion Clause is fair.
Yung Rat Poison aka Lil Triple Beam Balance Plus evasion is all luck no competitiveness to it
How *GOOD* were *MISDREAVUS* and *MISMAGIUS* Actually?
*I WONT STOP*
I'll try to push u up there, bud.
Oh I came here to post this one, have an upvote my man
I've been binge-watching this series recently and I'd love to see a breakdown of Heatran's effectiveness across generations. It's mentioned a lot in previous videos for its status as a bulky Fire-type with assorted status and Hidden Power usage.
A dissection of its competitive history would make for a pretty interesting video and also add some much-needed context regarding Heatran's viability for people who watch regularly but aren't as familiar with the competitive scene.
Welp, it's been 3 years and we still don't have the Heatran video
"Pokémon does weird things to your brain."
Dude, so true... so true...
How BORDERLINE was Staraptor ACTUALLY?
Staraptor: The Borderline Bird.
close combat though
Surprised it stays in UUBL, when pokemon like Gyarados, Haxorus, Hydreigon, and normal Metagross fall to UU.
HighBunker HxH Parodies How come Staraptor learns close combat but Braviary doesn't?
it's a lesser known VGC staple with scarf final gambit on trick room teams, not always used but sees some success just about every format
How good was walrein actually?
(I know he’s not great I just want a video on my boy)
Walrein was good in Gen 3
Sup Seal~ While doing Walrein, might as well do Glalie or Froslass too.
Avalugg is overall a better defensive ice type
-Better defense [but worse sp defense]
-Better attack
-Rapid spin
-Reliable recovery
Also it faces competition from Lapas as a slow bulky water/ice type
avalugg is complete shit lmao
Is nobody gonna mention the fact that Jumpluff is #69 in the Johto dex?
🗿 Nice
Happy to see one of my two favourite Pokémon covered. I know it isn't the best but thank you patrons for covering the best puffball
How GOOD was Misdreavus/Mismagius ACTUALLY?
mind you evio misdreavus makes a great special tank set.
When fantina existed
Might not have been UU, UUBL, or OU every generation but I love it
How GOOD was Mew ACTUALLY
Hell Yeah
Op
Only good in Gens 1-4, ok in Gen 5-6, and now it's just underwhelming.
100th like 😌
I find it funny that I was playing Crystal last night, evolved my Skiploom into Jumpluff & used it to take down the fifth gym. It had a lot of help from my Noctowl but it was a lot of help since it resisted fighting & could get status conditions down, using peck throughout the entire gym with my Noctowl wasn't going to cut it, especially that Hitmonlee two shotted it in the beginning so Jumpluff came in & was like, I have your back. Kinda funny this video on Jumpluff was uploaded the same day I used mine to take down the fifth gym in the Johto region. I actually just kept it on my team because I couldn't afford potions & leach seed helped out.
Lmao
I used Jumpluff to take down Morty and Pryce
How Good was SCYTHER Actually?
Come on, you guys teased it in the Scizor video that it was good enough for its own, time to pay up!
indeed how good is scyther actually
How GOOD was Roselia and Roserade ACTUALLY ?
With all the legendary and scary mon in vgc. I've never expected a ball of grass with pompom being one of the most successful mon in tournament
Misdreavus is an extremely interesting pokemon. Be sure to talk about one of the weirdest sets that could only work in Gen 3: Imprison.
How good was Mewtwo Actually? You still owe us for that stunt you pulled...
Alex Simon yes
uber, uber, uber, uber, uber, uber, uber. that's it.
Alex Simon bump
What story? I'm lost. I've always thought that Mewtwo was just the generic "too strong" Pokémon.
Lol we patreons pulled that one 😂😂
I look forward to every episode of this series. Sundays are pretty damn great because of this. ^^
Just discovered this channel. Time to binge!
To me, it never mattered how good or bad Jumpluff has been in Competitive Pokémon. Cottomew the Jumpluff kicked butt in my Pokémon Blazing Emerald Playthrough, no matter what it faced: it put Pokémon to sleep and guaranteed a capture, wrecked everything with Needle Arm, always dished out critical hits, and KILLED STEVEN'S METAGROSS when 2/3 of my team was basically dead.
It might be silly to worship a Pokémon whose status is nowhere near PokéGod levels, but Cottomew deserves all of the praise I could give to anything.
Once again, another amazing video, FSG!
How good was Aggron please, wanna see the Steel Behemoths history
Evan Schwarz, short summary: started amazing, but slid every generation onward. It's Mega didn't even help too much.
The TL:DR, is alright, started off well but its horrid typing kept biting it in the ass as more pokes managed to abused it. The Mega is a monster, but not top tier.
Mic Drop
Its mega dragged it out of the pits of nu/pu and brought it to uu
I want to see how good was Parasect actually because I'm curious how it worked in competitive.
very niche, but uniquely has rage powder, wide guard & spore along with a surprisingly usable attack stat & swords dance
It didn't lol
In singles no use. In doubles it had rage power i guess. But Jumpluff was just better parasect.
it's more similar to Amoongus than Jumpluff, being a slow spore user
DUGTRIO, EXEGGUTOR, KANGASKHAN.
3 gen 1 pokemon that, given the correct generation, would be top tier threats. Even in multiple gens. Yet they don't have a video.
They should have a video.
CRimZ Indeed they should!
Also before I get 40 replies of "what about Mewtwo/Mew/Persian/Jynx/Weezing/Pidgey/Etc." Let me just say, stop.
Executtor has a video
How Godly was Pidgey ACTUALLY?
Duh, ubers every gen, better than Mewtwo
Also Jynx and Golem.
I still remember beating a talonflame with a jumpluff in a random battle on Showdown
How GOOD was Flygon or Dugtrio ACTUALLY?
How good were Misdreavus and later Mismagius actually?
Jumpluff is one of the many reasons I love Gen 2. So many good and wholesome desgins. I need to get a shiny pink pluff someday.
I'm glad old puff had some utility at least; it makes me happy to see weaker mons have a niche. Gotta love the underdog.
How GOOD was Dugtrio ACTUALLY? Seriously you talk about it with every Steel type.
How GOOD was Pidgeot ACTUALLY?
This one deserves it
Woah, I was expecting a video full of trashtalking against the cottonball, but it was better than I expected.
Great video, man.
Giving Jumpluff a mega evolution would make it good. Give him a grass/steel, with Huge Power as it's ability make its Speed 130 and the other 80 stats divide it between its Atk and Sp. Atk. There now he's a monster.
How good was Exeggutor actually?
How Good was Roselia/Roserade ACTUALLY?
EdmacZ omg yesss!
Fighting for Persian
I don't know who your writer is, but they deserve a pay raise. Great video!
How good was Muk actually?
Scott Cawthon no point doing it if he won’t do Gen 7
He did it for raichu
How good was exeggutor actually? i`ll never give up on this damn palm tree!
That is a good idea maybe it will show alola Exeggutor.
How good was weezing actually?
these videos are really growing on me i like them
How good was Flygon actually!! I'd love to see Misdrevous too!
How GOOD was Exeggutor actually?
You guys need to have a episode that comes out on Thursday or Friday plus the one on Sunday
Woah, in 20 hours you got 2000 comments. Your channel is awesome!
How good. Was electabuzz
Next should be Exeggutor, please
How good was the only pokemon to be Ubers all generations, Mewtwo?
How GOOD were Misdreavus and Mismagius ACTUALLY
My god I remember when he had 3k subs 158k you can be serious damn man you keep at it youll be at a million in no time
My most notable memory of Jumpluff is when I used it in LeafGreen to catch Raikou without using a Master Ball. That Speed with Sleep Powder is a force to be reckoned with.
Weezing?
wile ‘ Reeeeally seconding this
I do find it funny that it had more VGC play time than half the other Pokemon you've covered.
Lucario and gen 1 explained part 3; love your videos
How good was mewtwo ACTUALLY?
how *GOOD* was sableye actually?
Byron Slowe That's a funny way of spelling Mega Sableye.
i was expecting to see comments on the actual content of the video, but its just suggestions for the next one. can we change that? i feel like you made someone like me who isnt competitive at all and has never pokemon battled another player invested in the ups and downs of Jumpluff's ride through the metas. thanks, False Swipe!
HOW GOOD WAS OMASTAR/LORD HELIX
How good was Pidgeot or Staraptor actually please.
G Rox staraptor plz
Staraptor, the forever UUBL Pokemon.
I really need to know how they did. I feel like the route 1 birds need some love here.
At least it looks adorable. I’ve always had a soft spot for it, even went out of my way to catch a hoppip in Gale of Darkness and train it up to a Jumpluff in every play through.
Ahhhhhh, will never forget in Gen 6 (when I started playing Showdown) when I really loved Jumpluff (for some reason) and got onto the ladder with a team carried by Sub/Leech Seed/Sleep Powder/Infestation Jumpluff lmaooooo it was so toxic but it surprisingly worked quite well.
HOWEVER. I don't care if it destroys the meta game... GIVE. JUMPLUFF. SPORE. It literally uses it in the gen 2 anime :(
How good was Kingler ACTUALLY?
ViperMagnum7: he’s all ready done that
Jay Wagner no he did kingdra
38 Gen 1 Pokemon Remain!
Butterfree, Beedrill, Pidgeot, Raticate, Fearow, Arbok, Sandslash, Nidoqueen, Ninetales, Parasect, Venomoth, Dugtrio, Pertsian, Golduck, Primeape, Victreebell, Golem, Rapidash, Farfecth'd, Dodrio, Dewgong, Muk, Kingler, Electrode, Exeggcutor, Marowak, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Weezing, Kangaskhan, Seaking, Mr Mime, Jynx, Pinsir, Ditto, Omastar, Kabutops, and Mewtwo.
Of these, I think the outstanding choices are Pidgeot, Golem, Pinsir, Omastar, and Mewtwo, Pidgeot was the original common bird, Golem is the only member of the four original trade evolutions not to get an episode (despite being big in G1), Pinsir was the the original badass bug, Omastar is Helix, and Mewtwo is Mewtwo.
Salnax you forgot Electabuzz and Magmar
Oh darn. I forgot about Pokemon that got evolutions later.
Salnax as well Tangela
You forgot Scyther, there's a Scizor vid, but they said Scyther was good enough of a pokemon to deserve its own video.
And mew
How good was misdreaveous and mismagius actually?
I had a funny double jumpluff gimmick set. I had a Z-Splash Bullet Seed and another that only Rage Powdered and Encored awake things.
It was only used in a casual tournament at my school but it won't because no one ran grass to support their teams.
Mewtwo!! It should have had its video ages ago!
How GOOD was MewTwo ACTUALLY?
In Colosseum, Jumpluff was a must. It was the only fast status inducer in the beginning.
what about golem? i wanna see what happened to the gen 1 rock battle
How good was the steel dinosaur, Aggron, anyways?
Terrible typing, bad Special Defense.
Not very good. It had that whole Head Smash + Rock Head thing going which was pretty awesome, but that's it. Pretty subpar until it got its Mega.
I think its more of a giant lizard.
Now I REALLY wanna see Misdreavus and Mismagius ACTUALLY
how good was weezing actually? i've heard you mention it a lot in gens 3 and 4 specifically and now i'm curious
Not the best Pokemon competitively, but I have seen a new light on this Pokemon after this video. Didn't know all of these feats it got throughout its time. I don't remember ever losing to it in my plays, but nice to see what others have done with it.
How good was Electubuz/Electivire actually?
How GOOD was Ditto ACTUALLY?
In my opnion, gen 2 grass type pokemon are so cool,i really like meganium, sunflora, bellosom and jumpluff. And i have quite struggle to choose the one i will use.
Bellossom and Jumpluff are good, Meganium and Sunflora are trash, so I see quite an easy picking, specially since Bellossom and Jumpluff play different roles and you can use both
How good was *Marowak* actually?
How good were Roselia and Roserade actually
Please, do Persian or Mewtwo next time🐈🐅
Wolf1991ism Yes!
Wolf1991ism did u just assume mewtwo is a dog? Mewtwo is a damn clone of a cat fetus.
