Good comparison video. I gave a hollow head tungsten and eurthane insert iron set a season . ( Honma tr21x) and the long/short dispertion and ball stopping backspin from 160 yards is a major issue. Eventually you find that you cant club yourself for the max distance shot as the odd one goes 10 yards over the green , so you add that to the "miss" parameter along with the lack of stop backspin, and the game becomes a lottery. In real terms this means say on the Glen 5th you are looking at a left hand pin at 135yards , ok so you have 8 yards to land the ball , before the pin or it hits the upslope and rolls back into the valley. To land the "distance" iron its got to be 6 feet on the green as it rolls 9 feet . So its 130 minimum, but if you miss that by 2 yards or 1.5%. Your short and down the slope . Then its also the other way , with what feels like the same strike it flys 139 again 2% difference , this time more , it lands past and runs through and into the slope leaving a fiddly chip off a down hill lie that you hope you dont hit thin , over the green and down into the valley . . . And then theres the uber flying monster that just carrys the green hits the back of the slope and ends up against the out of bounds fence . So much for the easy to hit distance iron 😂😂😂 when you have that lot swirling round your head when playing club championship qualifying. Personally im going back to blades , 135 its a solid 8 or easy 7 , i will be 2 to 3 yards out distance wise and the left right dispersion will be how good im swinging it on the day . No drama . No Bryson de Shambles science . And a a foot note , these D9's do look good and my foresomes partner plays them and pretty much nails the distance when he occasionally hits it properly 🎉
Thanks for the comment. I've been using the D7 Forged and then the D9 Forged for the last few years. I had a set of Wilson Staff CB blade/cavity combos to try for a couple of months in between that. I have to say I personally didn't notice that the CB/Blade set were more reliable for distance. I did notice that if I hit the blades badly they dropped out of the air pretty quickly. Whereas if I mis-hit the D9 Forged to the same extent they did a little bit better. The other thing I found difficult to accept was having to hit at least one more club every time if not more. The times this was most apparent was into the wind, when, say, you needed 2 extra clubs anyway, plus the the extra club because it's a blade - suddenly a 7 iron shot which needed to be a 5 iron because of the wind was turning into a 4 iron with the CB/Blade set. Psychologically going from 7 iron to 4 iron was difficult. The main benefit I perceived from the CB/Blade set was it looked nicer and possibly felt a bit softer.
@@golffm6924 possibly the honma,s were a bit extreme in their performance. You could hit the 7 iron over the fence behind 9 if it came out hot 🔥 . Not what's needed . I'm going to give the d9 some serious consideration , in 2024
Good video and very well done analysis. I don't have a favorite, but looking at the stats you hit the TaylorMade significantly slower (82 vs 84/85 mph club speed) so I wouldn't really trust the other stats.
The swing speed is the least trustworthy measurement on the Skytrak - it's purely a calculation based on ball speed and spin etc. so I wouldn't actually go by that too much. It maybe indicates more that I didn't actually strike them very well rather than I was actually swinging slower.
Low dispersion on the Wilson irons would appear to be a significant differentiator with these irons. Really should have been a discussion point in the video.
My general takeaway from the forgiveness angle, and resulting dispersion, was that there wasn’t enough difference to bother about. The all felt like they were doing a very similar job in all areas. The models are all very closely aligned as we should really expect, and I personally find it difficult to separate them, the margins in feel and performance are very small.
Congrats on 100 videos. Well done. An interesting review and surprising that there is basically no difference in performance. This made me really think. So its all down to an individual perception of what looks and feels the best. I would think that the price of a set of irons should be a major factor when choosing new clubs.....but is it? Wilsons don't have tiny slivers of tungsten or wee bits of urathane, and even though they perform just as well, they are "cheaper". And of course the major PGA winners all play the big brand name clubs and get paid big money to tell us all that we can hit a golf ball just like them.....longer, straighter, easier with more forgiveness. The golf industry does an amazing job of marketing and justfying why a guy should take on a second mortgage to buy a set of clubs. Cheers!

Yes, although I would probably prefer it to be different, I keep finding that the differences between clubs (albeit in the same category) are so tiny that it's not worth mentioning. It makes sense that in this day and age, you wouldn't produce something that didn't compete closely with your rivals and they'll ensure that anything they launch is either as good or (imperceptibly in most cases) better than your rivals.
Ive just moved out of the D7 Forged, i found too frequently a hot strike blowing targets by 10+, distance consistency was a genuine problem. Interesting to know if the other clubs suffer the same issue. FWIW, I went to the ZX7 and honestly, they are considerably easier to hit and control.
I thought you said that you are reviewing the 2023 TaylorMade P790 but the looking at the clubs together you are showing the 2021 p790. Which one were you reviewing the 2021 or the 2023?
