This scene can be a catharctic therapy for some people.

It only seems forced until you find yourself with a relative completely capable of doing this very thing in real life. For me though it's less that the mother is mean and more that she reflects the growing disinterest in Justine in the ritual of the wedding. Rampling's character tried to fit in with the "normals" by getting married and failed, Claire succeeded (apparently) and Justine is about to fail spectacularly; as her mother says "Justine will never be one of them".

It's hilarious that some people actually applauded the speech.😆

It probably shows how despite a family is dysfunctional people will smile and look the other way.

First time I saw this scene i was so taken aback. I found it to be so funny and truthful. What people feel after a dissappointing, frustrating and bitter experience. Perhaps what anyone feels after being married to a liar, cheater, addict and/or narcissist.

1:14 Jack Bauer is strangely calm during that speech.

the mother was spectacular, the ex-husband provoked her and she did not hide and put the hypocrisy aside. He acted looking to be dominant and it went wrong, you can see his frustration with the ex

Obviously both of them are a pieces of shit but the mother actually understood Justine instead of her father who also tried to push her into acting happy ignoring that she in fact is not happy

Does anyone know the significance of what the mother is wearing around her neck? It seems to be some sort of talisman. Could it be the mother that is where Justine learned the 'magic' for the ending?
Also, the mother seems not in on all the celebration most likely because she believes the futility of it all, choosing not to be one of the insiders and only to see things as they really are. Evidently, the internet already spread a version of the truth of Melancholia's path hitting Earth called 'the dance of death'. However the majority of people would not want to accept that truth and would want to carry on as though it would only pass by in a spectacular fashion.

Honestly if it wasn't for the planet that's about to eviscerate Earth, I actually feel really bad for Jack Bauer here 😂

Why did one of the waiters or guests keep hifing his face from Justine?

Yes I also agreed that in the context of this scene, the only way this scene with her mother is "believable" is if most of the guests already know her and they view her as an eccentric. Another factor to make it believable, would be if John already told all of the guests, that his mother in law is there and if she starts saying "off the wall things" to just ignore it and do not egg her on or engage her.

guests aren't going to step into a family matter between the bride and her mother. if the bride invited her mother and is tolerating it, it's not your place to get offended.

I enjoyed this film overall. I was taken back by this scene though. I thought it was rather forced and a bit silly. "I am the mean mother character! So you get Justine has a mean mother! Ok. Now I am finished with my role. Thank you all."

Yeah we don’t really get an answer to the question of why she came to the wedding

@@headphonic8 I'm guessing she loved her children but also wanted to get ahead of what the ex husband would say. Either way, it was been a lose-lose situation for her. She is a bad mother if she doesn't attend, and she'll be one too, if she won't toast at her daughter's wedding. The least she can do is be honest and get a brief moment to control the narrative of what people are going to say/think about her. All in all, I don't think it was a bad scene. I love Charlotte Rampling, and this scene has stuck with me over the years, as I see people get in and out of marriages.

@@flowerpowerargenta it was just so on-the-nose though. "domineering? what a load of crap!" i mean come on, the joke is too obvious.
