would love to see videos on various bug chow recipes you've used with success. Just recently subscribed, really enjoying your may madness! Oh and you forgot to cover what grinds your gears in your live stream this weekend 😜 can't wait to hear it lol
Glad you enjoyed! And ya it should be interesting.
I'd love an updated isopod and springtail video. Also, a Sheldon update pretty please :)
I film a reptile room tour almost monthly, where I show all the animals and give quick updates. The springtails are doing great, we only have isopods in the tanks.
Love the "Alpha Reptile" & "Chameleon X-Ray" shirts!!! Keep the videos coming. 🤙
Feel free to buy one haha
Thanks I will be getting springtails now
Awesome they are a great additions to any tank.
"more springtail goodness" is adorable!
Springtails are awesome!
Home made springtail food video (:
Yes please!
use raw rice
I currently use rice and brewers yeast but I would like to see what Mike uses in his mix. :)
+Thorin192 yeah there might be some good stuff in there
Unboxing Lietuviškai I use nutritional yeast. It's cheap and they seem to love it.
Hey Mike, another great video man. I, amoung others are interested in seeing your springtail food recipe. No pressure lol just showing interested. Keep up the good work. ps if this video has already been made then i apologized, it may have been overlooked in my search. lol
No worries, I actually filmed video about it, and it got deleted... So next time I make some food I will certainly film it!
thank you for this information!
do you rinse your charcoal?
Ya
I'd love to see a detailed vid of your recipe. I use my own recipe inspired by CZcamsr David Birkbeck. He has a great recipe that I tweaked a bit to suit my own preference.
yes, please, a video on how you make your food mix and how often and how much you feed them. Thank you.
No problem!
when it comes to natural light would you say you should keep them out of the light or give them more time in the light?
Uhhh I don't think it really has a huge effect on them... generally I would keep them out of hot direct sunlight though.
Love these guys to feed to my nano fish. I was wondering how often do you feed them? I do it whenever I think about ( which isn't very consistent).
I use them mostly in the tanks for bioactivity.
Mike Tytula Don't you always have a culture going though? I was just wondering how often you feed them.
ohhh feed the culture, like 2-3 times per week
@@MikeTytula do u just put the food in there? like just sprinkle it around?
So odd never thought my blacksmithing would end up sneaking in to my reptile keeping lol . I make my own oak charcoal .
That's awesome!
Do you use mealworms often? I'm curious because you don't breed your own, unless you're lucky and have found a cheap supplier. I used to breed my own and it's very easy. Another great video 👍🏻
No meal worms are not that nutricious at all.
hay mike i also like to add to your vid in a comment i use coco fiber/cole and leaf litter , as a mix and for me it works the best i have my springtails boom in 2 to 3 weeks and they are poping off and you want mold they eat it the more the better it helps them boom if you like to see how i set up my mix just let me know
Shoot me some pics on my fb page
Pleassee do the springtail food video! And do you have advice for mites? I am having a hard time with them
Start over and make a tray filled with diatomacious earth
Hi. I’m wondering what’s that white worm and how they came in to the bin. Is it harmful to springtail? Thank you
They are just tiny thread worms, they can't really harm your springtail culture. I didn't add them so I imagine they must have just been on the media.
Loved it. Thank you!! Question: is it okay to add the charcoal to a gecko enclosure if and When transferring the springtails?
Ya that’s not an issue!!
Im looking into getting royal oak lump charcoal at Canadian Tire. Im new to the vivarium hobby.
That should work!
Help! I have a PAC man frog with small things like this but I don't think its springtails ? The frog doesn't seem bothered by them oh and also they seem to lay in the water bowl and sworn frogs waste
Great video. Do you have to boil the charcoal before use in order to sanitize it. I'm planning on making a bioactive set up for my chameleons with spagnum moss. Will they do good in that substrate?
I personally don't boil it, but it certainly wouldn't hurt!
Pardon me sir, I followed your directions down to the T.
Recently I’ve seen an increase of black bugs infesting my springtail culture. How do I get rid of them and prevent them? Thank you.
Depends what black bugs you are talking about. Feel free to send some photos of them to me on IG and we can go from there.
Quick question wich is the bettet/funner pet a crested gecko or a chameleon thanks already for the feed back
I’m going to be cultivating my own very soon,I’m just a little confused as to if they need a hole for ventilation or something.
Seems no one really addresses this.
Most do need some ventilation, I reckon that's why mine aren't doing very well
Yes, They Do Need Some Nutrition, Mine Came Up Accidentally On A Piece Of Potatoe In an Isopod Jar lol
Now they're eating the potato and I don't know how to shift them to another culture and remove the rotting potato
I personally use fish flakes and rice
Hopefully that works well
great video, I just subscribed
Thanks!
So spring tails move really fast?
Typically, yes!
Would you use springtails over isopods??
Both together haha
When it come to charcoal, is that braai charcoal? Sorry I just reallised that that sound cheeky and rude but I dont meen it to be😅 thank yoy so much I love your videos
Hope you enjoy your week
is there a link to your personal mix of food?
I never ended up making a video haha
@@MikeTytula well would you text in the reply how you make your mix of food then? lol
Question: will the springtails survive if I breed them on charcoal and dump that charcoal into a tank for my vivarium mix?
Ya I don't see a problem with that!
Can I use charcoal from the firepit outside? And can I feed them like old vegetables? Like cucumbers etc.
I wouldn't use outside charcoal just because of all the hitchhikers that could come one them. And I would recommend if you want to feed them something simple that you feed white rice or brewers yeast.
@@MikeTytula well it's my firepit in my yard. and thnx :)
That doesn't mean anything... They could easily be nematodes, parasites and a whole host of other things that are in there. But it's up to you :)
@@MikeTytula I'll take the chance :)
@@MikeTytula do they need light?
Can i culture them on peat? My Utricularias can feed off of them, and i see a lot of them coming out off the peat, so they probably have a nest there, so if they have a home already, what do i feed them?
Ya they will culture on peatmoss!
did you do a vid then on your insect chow? I'd love to see what you mix together! THANKS!!
I will when I have to make more of it.
I can't wait, THANKS!
Where do you source your springtails? Am I good to just flip a rock in the garden and collect some from there?
I personally wouldn't do that just for risks of pathogens, virus, and parasites. But it's up to you! I bought them from a seller.
Do you need to poke tiny holes in the container
I never did, just make sure you open it once or twice a week
Can you use any holes for the container and if not why? And if you can how?
I wouldn't because they just would crawl out.
Can i get these in the wild?
probably
can help get springtails
So are these guys okay in a tank with no real plants?
Ya of course!
Okay thanks. I've never heard anyone talk about them who wasnt working with a planted tank.
Is an airation layer and whatnot still necessary with them being the only thing in there? Maybe a quick video on this would be helpful.
I'm looking for your food recipe. I like your CUC videos.
Sounds good! I will definitely be posting a video next time I make a batch.
Can springtails live in a leopard gecko tank with eco earth?
It if it moist enough
My springtails came in a container of dirt. How can I separate them from the dirt into the charcoal? Prob sounds like a dumb questions but I need to know lol. Thank you!
They are hydrophobic so you can fill the container with water and they will float
@@MikeTytula awesome I appreciate the reply . Then just pour them over the charcoal?
@@Anthony-eg7pw Correct!
@@MikeTytula thanks for your help!
Could we use activated charcoal?
Like from a fish tank? Yes!
I'm gonna use springtails in my plants cause we have these mushrooms from our peat moss and we have too many shrooms
These might help some!
So the last time I tried this, the water in the container just kinda stagnated and killed off all the springtails. Any idea why? :S
Honestly, I've had that happen before and im not sure what caused it
Are isopods better for larger reptiles i have a savannah monitor thats why I ask
Both should be used
Mike Tytula Thanks for the feedback
Followed your link but DBD doesn’t sell springtails... where do you get them? Do you sell them?
It depends where you are in the world!
In CA
Where do you actually get the springtails?
Online stores, or local people like me that breed them.
Mike Tytula Thank you man appreciate the response good luck on ur channel
Give them a broccoli, or papaya. Thell boom up like crazy!!!
interesting
how started springtails without culture ❓
You have to start with a culture
@@MikeTytula You have to have a culture to make a culture, but if you already have a culture is easy to make another. The problem is how to stared the first cultere? This is the hard one.
1:16 frickchamber... heres some charcoal, now frickkk (pewdiepie reference)
Can't say I get that reference haha
Springtail food ingredients please!!!
When I make some more I will certainly post a video about it
Mike Tytula Thanks!!!
how to get springtails
Depends where you live honestly
Suspend house plant soil, compost or check work bins, springtails float. I found mine in moss and under rocks where lots of pillbugs live.
How to make a
Pray for Manchester!!!
Jake Reptiles I love your videos!
Praying isn't going to get rid of the "cultural enrichment"
What do you mean by 'Cultural Enrichment'?
Why are you posting this on a Springtail culture video...
Also fuck praying. Praying doesnt do you shit. Go donate money to the familys with dead children.
When's the day in the life coming?
Might not be during may, it's hard to say
Just saying, this isn't a hate comment but isn't it a springtail culture
uncooked rice
That works
it looks like thousands of white walking sesame seeds! 😅😅😅
