    Great video. Good for you! Trying new things. I am all over this! I have a dozen 'used up' ff cultures right now that I'll setup tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

      Thanks! hope between everyone in the hobby we can perfect this method, sorry I haven't been able to respond sooner my account was kind of wonky for a bout a month or so and I couldn't see any notifications or respond to or like videos.

    Works great for culturing mites too. Gotta vary that diet.. ;)

    I'm currently rearing 8 baby salamanders that are aprox 1"- 1.5" so this is great news for me and the like. Yeah I have a ff culture that was a day from tossing, but not now. Its pretty smelly though and will step that culture on its side in my night crawler setup which had unknowingly had spring tails in it. Thanx for the tip and will definitely pass this on! Subed and thumbs up for sure

    Young man, a refreshing new (to me) take on this Springtail subject. You are spot on about keeping an open mind about new ideas (thumbs up). We are told (by the "experts") to avoid and keep those pesky mites out at all costs, but you have just turned it on it's head and proved (at least in your case) that so called pest mites can still be tolerated and of use (to the frogs - though, not my cup of tea, the frogs I mean) - Just don't like the use of the description Poison Dart Frog - puts me right off :) - Added to favs - always willing to consider new ideas. - Regards Jim from UK (Lapsed Aquarist looking to re-enter the hobby via ISOPODS).

    I culture my springtails in organic potting mix w a little rinsed play sand, sphagnum moss, and a big chunk of pillow moss to hold humidity. I have tens of thousands and no mites

    Thank you for this sharing. I'll try it as soon as my flies cultures are finished ! (Btw i use fifty fifty charcoal and coco Musk for my springtails cultures right now and i'ts kinda slow, even with your range of temperatures)

    • @TCSDartFrogs
      @TCSDartFrogs  Před 4 lety +1

      This method is kind of slow but if you make new spring cultures this way every week you'll have a constant supply.

  • @lorishellenberger5002
    @lorishellenberger5002 Před 4 lety +2

    Being new to this hobby, about a year now, I was sooo worried about my cultures getting too old and getting mites. Good to know that a few mites won't harm my frogs. I have noticed in my thumbnail tank tiny spidy webs, spider mites? I keep just swiping it, doesn't seem to bother my thumbnail frogs.

    • @TCSDartFrogs
      @TCSDartFrogs  Před 4 lety +2

      I wouldn't be worried if it were spider mites because they can't harm the frogs but if it is an actual spider web I'd be worried and would try to find the spider and remove it as some spiders are capable of killing thumbnail species and the frogs can get caught in the webs as well.

    • @jerumd

      @@TCSDartFrogs Temperate springtails looked more like white moving sausages and their scientific name is Folsomia candida. Yours looked more like the tropical pink verities to me, and they're much more faster moving than the temperate Folsomia candida springtails. Pinks can handle slightly drought enclosures too, that's why I like them better than the common temperate springtails.

    Could you do a video on just how to feed your dart frogs? I just have two pair ....newbie here...and I’m not sure how to feed them properly. I have been dumping fruit flies in and bought the calcium dusting powder but I feel like I have no clue if they are getting enough food. They do hide a lot so I don’t know how much they are getting. Thanks!
