  • 6MilPhil tells us why A Matter of Life and Death is probably the best war film ever made.
Written, produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the film stars David Niven, Roger Livesey, Raymond Massey, Kim Hunter and Marius Goring. The film was originally released in the United States under the title Stairway to Heaven, which derived from the film's most prominent special effect: a broad escalator linking Earth to the afterlife.

A truly great film that I watch once a year and have done for the last six years.

The first time that I saw this film was on a black and white TV set in the 60's having no concept of the color aspect. Then I went to a showing at the Nu-Art theater in L.A. and could enjoy the full impact on this great film.

Cracking video, Phil - this film is an all-time favourite of mine, like you I first saw it as a kid, and was immediately captivated by it.

People look askance when I tell them that this is my favourite film and I re-watch it practically every time it is repeated on television. I had to buy the DVD to lend to them, and almost all of them are persuaded. The special effects were outstanding for its time, not just the stairway to heaven, and heaven itself, but where the action freezes whenever Conductor 71 appears. Just brilliant.

Even as an atheist, this has always been one of my favourite films.

As a fellow Atheist, (Thank God) this film had a great impact on me when I first saw it on a black &white T.V. back in the sixties. There's a few films containing religious or spiritual subtexts which are recommendable. Passolini's "The Gospel according to St.Mathew" and Rossolini's "The Flowers of St.Francis" just to name drop a couple.
