Not ancient. Medieval at most.
The style of Japanese instruments played here mostly come from the Edo period, the 1600s. That's contemporary with colonial America. Actual Ancient Japanese music is an entirely different sound.

They switch instruments probably because shamisens get out of tune very easily, so they just replace them with tuned ones to keep the song going.

Nobunaga Oda and Hideyoshi Toyotomi makes great use of them when bow and arrows are not feasible, like when the enemy are quite near. And during the Battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu Tokugawa makes great use of Musket volleys against cavalry charges.
Now that, that is real skill. I am impressed beyond belief. Absolutely beautiful performance.

らんゆに 姿勢をしっかりしないと音が綺麗に出なかったりするんだよー。多分

Today, after some 5 years of last listening to this performance and being now graduated in music composition. The experience is new ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL!
The amount of counterpoint, from canon to independant melodies, the driving force of each type of instrument group , Wood winds, strings and percussion, how each of them interact whithin their group and the groups amongst themselves. How the Musical discussions gives room for each instrument to shine.
The concept of "Ma", being clearly a guide to the structure of the arrangement.
I'm in awe as to how sophisticated a performance is that I already loved so dearly when I was in my teens.
This performance is like good wine, the more time pasts the finer it gets.

Now I've been collecting Bad Apple!! covers for a long time, but I have to say this is one of the most unique I've encountered. One of the rare ones to really feel like a new song, and they absolutely kill it too!
