    Vanessa Williams is one of the GREATEST comeback stories of all time! She was the FIRST black Miss America winner (which caused controversy at the time) who had to step down due to nude photos taken when she was younger. She was publicly shamed and lost her title. A few years later she re-emerged as an incredible singer and then a celebrated actress. Vanessa Williams stands today as an ICON who shows that perseverance and talent will see you through the storm.

      I don't remember the photos being nude, but she may have been or at least scantily dressed but the truly provocative part of the photo shoot was the sexual positioning of the two female subjects. I actually think it was a great publicity opportunity and would not be surprised if it was strategically planned. It was exposed in like the last month or two of her reign as Miss. America. While I would have preferred that she did not do that, she did not diminish herself in my point of view at all, everyone has used sexuality to escalate and promote themselves but had a problem with it because she was black, that is my opinion.

      I was around when she was crowned Miss America, and I don't recall it actually being controversial at all. I remember the constant drumbeat from people who *claimed* it was controversial because they were just *sure* that Middle America was aghast. But living in Middle America, I maybe only heard one person (an old woman) express any dismay over it, and her comment was met with eyerolls.

      @matthewvade6553 Před rokem

      @@kokostevens1071 Actually the photos weren't only nude, they were somewhat graphic (very graphic for the time) lesbian sex scenes. I was only a kid at the time, but I remember the "scandal" they caused, and that it was the best selling issue of Penthouse magazine ever, because everyone thought it would be a collector's item someday. Only, as pointed out below, that issue became even more well known when the centerfold became perhaps the most famous porn actress on the planet, and even more so when they found out her entire career was done with a fake ID, and she was only 16 when she was in that Penthouse issue. So every issue of that "collectible" became child porn that could send the owner to jail.

    Wonderful 90s ballad (1992). This was her first (and only) #1 Billboard Hot 100 song, but it was by no means her only big hit. You should also check out "Dreamin'", "Running Back to You", "Love Is" (with Brian McKnight), "The Sweetest Days", and "Colors of the Wind" (from the movie "Pocahontas"). If you want to see one of her movies, she actually did a really cool action film called "Eraser" with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think you'd love that film.

She had been invited to the church my family and I was attending at the time! (I was barely 17 years old at the time, and just remember being so emotional when she'd won Miss America, so you can imagine when that scandal broke, it hit like a ton of bricks!) Needless to say, It was an out-of-body experience meeting her, she was just so breathtakingly beautiful! What this scandal set out to do, did not succeed! She rose above it all, and became a superstar! Pure class! I love all her music, and her voice is so underrated IMO. I think u guys would also love her hip/hop side as well, with "He's Got The Look"! She was the first black Miss America, but was dethroned because they found out that she had formerly posed nude for a photo shoot with another woman. She was really dragged through the mud for that at the time. People were relentlessly judgemental towards her about it. Vanessa was in the TV show "Ugly Betty". I knew her first as Miss America, then a singer. Her first record came out around 1987 or 88. I have some of her albums. I think she first started acting in Broadway plays, and then was in TV/movies. If you've seen "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air", she was a guest star on one episode.
    I heard y'all use the words "perfect combination" in your reaction. That's the name of a song by Stacy Lattisaw (duet with Johnny Gill). She was a singer in the late 1970s to the late 1980s. I think she was around 11 when her first album came out, but she later left secular music. She has a CZcams channel now and sometimes posts videos (usually church related). Some of her most well known songs are "Dynamite", "Love On A Two Way Street", "Attack Of The Name Game", & "Let Me Be Your Angel". Stacy is also one of the singers in the MLK Jr. tribute song "King Holiday". Stacy discovered Johnny Gill, who started out as a solo singer, but later joined New Edition after Bobby Brown left.

    I have always *loved* her voice. She doesn't do showoffy vocal runs and a lot of belting. No; her voice is just smooth and rich as butter.
    Vanessa Williams is so much more than meets the eye. She studied musical theatre and she has been singing and acting all her life. I was lucky to sit down and interview her while Ugly Betty was on, but not about that role. She was a longtime member of Special Olympics Worldwide, and she came to D.C. to participate in an event to raise awareness about intellectual disabilities, having just finished an independent film in which she played the mother of a child with intellectual disability, played by a disabled actor. She was so thoughtful, so professional, so pleasant, so knowledgeable about Special Olympics and IDs, and she generous. I did ask about Ugly Betty, and instead of talking about herself, she heaped praise on her costar Michael Urie, who she insisted be given a full starring role as her assistant on the show. She called him a "genius" and said she has learned a lot from him. Mind you, he was younger and "green," and also gay (somewhat closeted at the time), and she seemed truly impressed and protective of him. It was charming and wonderful. I also asked her if she was planning to put out another album because I *love* her voice, as I said, and she seemed surprised I was even aware that she sings and she said she had been tinkering around with one but didn't know if there was an audience for her music at that point in her career. I was enchanted. She's an A+ person. You should bring more attention to her music, including her beautiful Christmas songs that she recorded for the "A Very Special Christmas" albums to benefit Special Olympics. ❤️

    That amazing voice is what won her the Miss America Pageant in 1984. It's tragic that she made a bad choice as a younger woman and violated the Ethics Clause of her contract and had to give up the crown. She's a great comeback story and I've always admired her ability to persevere in the face of adversity.

She has some more up tempo hit songs like "Comfort Zone" and "Work To Do" , a Disney movie hit song with "Colors Of The Wind", and a good Christmas album. As an actress she goes by Vanessa L. Williams because there is another actress who was already known as Vanessa Williams. Vanessa L. Williams was a regular on the TV show Ugly Betty, and her biggest movies were "Eraser" and "Soul Food".

    Vanessa Williams is a singer, actress, and fashion designer. She's known as the first African-American woman to receive the Miss America title when she was crowned Miss America 1984 but resigned her title in 1984 amid a media controversy about her nude photographs being published in Penthouse magazine. She then had a successful career as a singer and actor, receiving multiple Grammy and Tony award nominations as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She received a public apology from the Miss America CEO during the 2016 pageant for the events of 1984. She has a beautiful voice and many fantastic songs and yes she has been in a number of makeup commercials. You should do her Disney Pocahontas song "COLORS OF THE WIND".

    Vanessa Williams is a class act. I had the good fortune of hanging out with her and her family when she was making her first record. After the whole Miss America blowout she really focused on making music and transforming her life. Once she made it I saw her briefly at a Grammy party and she stopped her whole entourage to chit chat with me for a minute till the PR lady gave me stink eye. My favorite Vanessa story was about the time we were drinking champaign in the hot tub on sultry LA night. Of course I omit the part where our kids were running around the pool, jumping in and splashing water everywhere. Fun times. Save the best for last brought back the memories. Thanks for Female Friday's.
