Welcome to our 2015 update.
2015 marked the Hubble Space Telescope’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate, they published a number of spectacular images. We’ll see:
• Caverns carved out of dust by a new star in the Orion Nebula
• The Veil Nebula move
• Through the Eagle Nebula
• A spectacular view of the center of our galaxy
• Andromeda galaxy disk details like we’ve never seen them before
• A lonely galaxy on the edge of our Local Void
• Hanny’s Voorwerp one of the strangest objects ever seen
We’ll also update Gaia’s progress, and take a look at Laniakea - a new way to identify superclusters.
The LHC at CERN reopened in 2015 after a two year upgrade.
Both CERN and Hubble touched on Dark Matter over the past year, so we’ll examine the evidence for Dark Matter (Coma Cluster, Bullet Cluster, Gravitational Lensing, Fritz Zwicky, Vera Rubin, galaxy curves, etc.) and discuss a few of the possibilities for what this mysterious material might be (hydrogen, WIMPS, Neutrino).
I trust you’ll find it interesting and informative.
When he's doing his intro I feel like I'm in the finest restaurant, getting a read-out of the delicious specials of the day, from the chef himself.
Every dish sounding tastier then the last, and I can't wait to sink my teeth into it.
@just saying Ha ha. Yeah, and assuming it hadn't been pre-planned, what are the odds that a read-out of the dishes in a restaurant would just happen to be said in the order of increasing tastiness?😵
dude ur voice is so relaxing is epic
True
o7 Mr.Butler
Can't even express how much I love your videos, Sir!
From time to time one such as David will come along, but it ain't often. I'm so fortunate to have stumbled onto his fantastic videos!
That's so true. I feel the same
My girlfriend used to make fun of me for being so fascinated by this stuff, she also told me she doesn't think NASA deserves funding and "space is a waste of time". I no longer associate with her.
LMAO!! - let me guess: she's a Republican?!
Good on you dude! It's not worth living with a woman the rest of your life that doesn't care about things that really matter! :)
My ex said the exact same things. All whilst she uses a microwave, her smart phone and bluetooth connections to listen to music 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Are you serious you met a person like that? Did she go to high school? Did she ever read anything?
He's the Bob Ross of astronomy
+Felipe Okumura Sanches
Pretty mutch heheh, I would love to hear him say something like :
"Look at that aluminium blue star there... happy little accidents."
omg that would be so funny LOL
Felipe Okumura Sanches true
Thank you for making this..........I very much enjoy these videos and want you to know that to those of us who are interested in these things your videos are invaluable.
definitely. love his videos
I was already in awe of the Universe before i began watching your series . Now , i get goosebumps seeing it as i never have before . The shear size and complexity of it all makes it almost to much to grasp . But you Sir are helping with that by making the complex a little easier to understand . And much more fun . Thank You .
Well, Dr, Butler you've out-done yourself again. I wish I had another 50 years to see how this all comes out but 25 years with Hubble, so far, has made me feel very fortunate indeed. Your fine series has added to the experience immeasurably.
Great videos you make. I'm happy to se a normal program, insted of t.v programs with actionpacked spacemonsters and killerstars that allways threten us
Thank You Mr. Butler. A real service to those of us who are interested and would like to learn more. Well Done.
Every one of David Butler's videos is gold
Liebestraum No. 3 in A-flat major is one of my favorites from Liszt. Very suiting for the visuals and your detailed explanation you give. It pairs well. Great work your videos. I absolutely love your videos. Thank you for doing it.
Phew! I just finished the series and I thank you for the really interesting and clear explanations you provided. These series made me wonder how on earth people were able to figure these out on such enormous scales galaxies have.
I joined Galaxy Zoo several years ago and classified galaxies for a few weeks. Fun even for a grandma. I cannot WAIT for the James Webb Space Telescope or to see the results of Gaia ..
Thank you so much for all of the work you've put into these amazing videos. Music, physics, math, astronomy, structure and well thought out playlists. Your channel truly is a diamond amongst the rough.
Thank you Sir.
Thanks professor im a 15 year old kid and enjoy learning physics
+Ervin Zeneli Ervin, Thanks for your note. Good luck in school. I think you're going to do well. David
Thank you professor!
I'm still waiting to do the general relativity and i'm only at the vectors and the forces.
There is a very long path until i stop waiting...
+AllinONE hello i just wanted to say that understing the eistein theory 100% its difficuld you must have very advancet math concepts and a great phisycs teacher to help you by the way how old are you?
Ervin Zeneli 14, by the way my friend (in my same class) has already understood the General relativity. My school is a very good one and i even have a good teacher.
Excellent videos in general. And I love the background classical music, very original and goes very with the subject matter.
Thanks in advance
I really really enjoy your videos
Big thanks from uk
From all of us who appreciate all the huge amount of work u do, thank you very very much!!!!
Tremendously interesting !!!
As many times as I've watched this entire series, start to finish, it just keeps improving. You have muted most of the music I used to enjoy but thanks for the Beethoven during the credits. Still waiting for JWST but currently scheduled for launch on my granddaughter's birthday. Thank you once again.
Alas is that why I noticed I couldn't find the video where Canon was playing ? It's my favorite classical piece
Thank you mr. Butler, you have made fascinating and beautiful series, along with your relaxing commentary and musics. We live in an exiting era ! So mutch to discover.
There is an earth like planet in every galaxy with highly conscience beings.
They call our galaxy Milky Way with a supermassive black hole in the middle with densely packed stars around it.
They don't see any difference in our galaxy then theirs.
They are thinking the same thing.
Completely possible and absolutely amazing.
Love your videos David!
These are such a gift.
What a perfect series.
Thank you fir these Mr. Butler.
🍁✨
Dark matter .. my ass. Right up there with Darwinian bs.
once again, nice job! your explanation and commentary couldn't be clearer and more easily followed. thanks for the invite, and I'll be waiting for the next!
Just now, I finished watching this series. I have to thank you sir. Despite being like you a fan of astronomy for extensive time? I still got a lot of useful information from this series and so many knowlege gaps closures. I hope we get the 2016 update soon and keep receiving your goodness many years to come.
David, absolutely startling! This is so inspiring. It literally takes my breath away to observe the expanse of eternity.
This is my new favorite youtube channel!
Thankyou for taking the time to make these videos. They have spectacular images and are full of knowledge. It's awe inspiring, Thankyou.
I am so thankful you continue to update this.
Thank you for these videos, Mr. Butler. I've learned so much. 👍
This is just a massive surprise and treat. Thanks David.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I like the way you make such a great volume of material accessible with concise explanations, without treating us like complete idiots in need of constant CG and superlatives (ahem, Nova). It is really quite good, and if you read these comments I hope you know the wealth of wonder and enjoyment you have brought to your audiece.
+Point Mass I do read the comments, and I thank you for your kind words and positive feedback.
Videos like this is why the internet was invented, great info on our place in the cosmos

OMG I've watched every one so far, only the updates to go!!! Thanks so much!!! Amazing!!!
Frightening. I can't really grasp the concept of infinity when I look out there! It gives me the shivers.
Outstanding series of docos. Thanks for producing these with such simple clear and concise commentary that is free of hyperbole and speculation.
Thank you for your awesome input and photos and information, music and mood is truly cool
Congratulations on an excellent series. Entertaining and informative. I'll be watching it again and recommending it to all who'll listen to me!

once again blown away by David Butler
One of the OGs that has a complete grasp on *all* current science at the mathematical level.
LOVE your videos. Please keep them coming !
hands down the best education on youtube & astronomy video, its a shame u don’t get recognition from the others for it
Thank you for your work, very refreshing to see well made productions open to all who care to look.
just superb. Absolutely stunning documentary, thanks.
As always thank you for your videos we enjoy them very much.
23:20 has to be the most amazing part. Anticipating the appearance of the supernova light
Galaxies are amazing so many opportunities for everything we can think of. Incredible man
Love your videos, David Butler. The classical music is perfect, and the adventure of exploring the universe of time and space seems to be in good hands!
This is really a quality content for anyone fascinated and curious about the nature and reality.
Looking forward for the following updates. Amazing!
";-)
Sir, you are an excellent teacher! Thank you so much!
Thanks, David, for all these cool videos.
Your videos are amazing and easily understood. Thank you so so so much.
Another fantastic video presentation. thank you so very much :)
So glad I found this channel - this is good stuff.
Well, Ervin and philips I am older than both of you put together and I am so happy Hubble has been making these fantastic discoveries and I can click on and marvel at them every night and philips enjoy physics with the 15 yr old but you don't need to be talking about being "stoned". These videos are way better than any drug. Get with it! Go outside some night, drug free, and you'll be amazed!
Thank you very much for your comprehensive videos! You are doiung an amazing job! Keep it up! Greets from Austria!
Sir you are the best teacher in astronomy .
wow, 2015 has seen some very substantial discoveries. I'm always amazed how we as a society keep getting more advanced overall by the day. man kind has a very bright future I believe. a few hiccups along the way who's perfect.
great job at these books and greater job keeping all the discoveries and advancements included in your updates. absolutely love your expression of your knowledge
Brilliant as always. Thanks David.
new subscriber to your channel here.....most excellent presentations David!
I hope you continue making these videos. I really enjoy them. You may have already thought about it, but maybe a "How Large is it?" series would be interesting. Thank you for educating us.
amazing work Mr Butler!
Great video once again David.
My new favourite channel.
Stellar presentation. Thank you for this.
Looking forward to this year's update!
Your work is wonderful, your channel is simply the BEST !👍🇫🇷👌💛
Very nice update. Would be nice to hear about gravitational waves in the next update. Cheers!
Wonderful! So informative and entertaining!
You say you created these videos for the people you love. You must love all of humanity that is hungry for knowledge who may not be mathematicians. Your presentations have given cohesiveness and continuity to space. I find it hard to believe you were not an educator so does my husband. He is a physician and is thoroughly enjoying and absorbing your videos. I just think there is not enough material to give people like myself who want to understand terms (AU) etc. I will rewatch and rewatch. It happened that I do have Seti at home running! Least I can do! Again, thank you so much!
Row, Thanks for you comment. I really appreciate it. I guess you could say that I am an educator now.
I have watched numerous astrophysics documentaries but this video is just astonishing.. Superb
Thanks for the awesome videos.
Mr. Butler,
First, let me start with saying that your videos are incredibly informative, easy to follow, and overall, an absolute pleasure to watch -- thank you for this! My father was an engineer, and contracted with NASA back in Hubble's mirror mishap days, and I got to grow up immersed in everything "space" with him -- many nights spent together with a telescope studying and wondering what else lies out there we cannot see! He got sick and eventually passed, and along with that, so did my interest in continuing on with the hobby. However, I found your videos a couple of years ago, and they singlehandedly have revived my interest to the point that I am back out with a scope and camera again. So thank you again -- I really do appreciate it!
Side question here if you don't mind -- what program(s) do you use to make these videos? I have been thinking of putting together similar videos (albeit not as in-depth) for my four year old daughter. Hopefully to spark an interest so that someday I can continue the tradition with her. In the mean time, I thought maybe some neat videos for her would be nice, and if you do not mind sharing, I would love to know the program you use for it?
Thank you again, Mr. Butler.
Lucas, Thanks for you note. I do this for my grandchildren. To answer your question, I use Vegas Movie Studio along with PowerPoint, Word, Audacity, and Photoshop on a Windows PC.
Thank to your videos mr. Butler I now have some understanding of astronomy.
Very educative thank you for uploading this invaluable vid.
Dave you da man your videos have helped me become an amateur astrophysicists
- To a non professional interested in the subjects explained; Your presentations are "Stupefying". And I am grateful.
- It let's me peek at these wonderous mysteries at a professional level. And make me realize how hard it is to dumb things down to the general public. Dont stop your wonderous work. ~ Irwyz1
thanks you Sir David Butler !!! you are a awesome scientist and wish the best of health happiness and long life !! you are a educator with a long experience of the Cosmos!!! thank you again !!!
Good to see Dave! Thanks
What a great video! Loved it😁
Interesting series, and excellent images. Thanks Mr. Butler. I've watched all of your "How Far Away Is It" videos and updates. Just as good as, or better than the Science Channel.
Thanks David. Love it
Sir,
Thanks for your videos.
Mr. Butler I found your channel while browsing. The playlists made it very easy to binge watch the entire content. This is on my favorites list now. Please ignore the nitpicking critics. I am awaiting your new series "How old is it" will you be covering evolution in it? The baby humming bird story got me thinking that you might! I hope you will, There is need for this type of elegant simplicity in the explanations of these very important theories to the average person. This is an excellent legacy to leave I hope I can also leave something which will be so useful and valuable to others for decades after I am gone.
+mozi tzu It will. Thanks.
What are the formulas graffitied on the walls in CERN LHC tunnel 26:06?
thank you for that David
Wow! Just finished the "How far away is it" series. Will view the series again in the near future.
David shows that science can also be art. If only I knew some of this when I took my two sons to star parties at the Cabrillo College Planetarium many years ago. These series are not only a learning experience but an emotional and awestruck one as well. The best experience since "Cosmos with Carl Sagan".
You're a great guy, doing so much to entertain and educate us!
Honorary price to you, sir!
Simply lovely!
Looking forward to more updates on Dark Matter
