S-bound 98 with 3-pin vs. NNN BC

  • Well I broke the metal clasp on one of my NNN BC bindings, so I decided to switch my Fischer S-bound 98 skis to a set of Voilé 3-pin bindings I had sitting around. I’m loyal to no binding over any other, so-like a guy shaving his beard can’t help but to try out certain looks partway through the process-I figured I’d do some trials to see if I can even tell a difference.

The second you said Dillon Reservoir I thought “hey I skied that area earlier this season!” The conditions were great, but I was still recovering from a nasty flu so I had trouble breathing.

Lots of nice clearings and gentle slopes around there and easy to access.

Thanks for this video! Just broke the clasp on my NNN-BC on my Guide/Annum/Epochs and considering switching to 3-pin. Was looking for reassurance the glide feel wasn't too big, and it appears to be close enough!

I think it’s a bit of a Princess and the Pea situation: someone who’s really sensitive to any change might care about the difference, but most people won’t. On those skis, I imagine 3-pins will feel roughly the same assuming the boots are similar. Feel free to let us all know how it goes.

Awesome, thanks for sharing all of these experiments!
Sort of a shame you didn't have the 3-pin Alaskas.

Thanks. Would have been nice to have the 3-pin Alaskas for the experiments, but I depend on luck since I get my gear secondhand. From what I’ve read, they pair exquisitely with the Rottefella 3-pin with cable.

It’s ok. The sound of the fishscales on corn almost drowns out the crying! Lol.

Thanks! This was near Keystone/Frisco/Breckenridge, CO. I ended up moving to NW CO since then, but still have great skiing spots.

Those little flies are called "snow fleas" or more propperly, springtails. They are not bloodsuckers but actually eat mold. It requires very specific conditions for the to come to the top of the snow.
    Good vid.

Saw there was already a reply. Left this here anyway. Get off my lawn.

6:56 those look like springtails. Btw, where are you? Looks a lot like the Uintas but I don’t recognize any landmarks.
Edit: never mind, if I’d only waited a few seconds longer, I’d have heard the reference to Grey’s And Torrey’s. Dude, I saw a tornado at the Grey’s peak trailhead last May!

Thanks for the education on springtails. That was an interesting Wikipedia read.

There's a serious downhill NNNBC boot from Fischer now. Its basically a snowboard boot with toebar. Could that put 3pin in the dustbin?

Is that the Fischer Transnordic? I have an old 2-buckle NNN BC boot with a high plastic cuff and stiff leather. I’d say that with that, NNN BC maxes out just shy of a plastic boot and 3-pins but no cable, but maybe a bit better than leather and 3-pin. The pivot is different with NNN BC, so the stance needs to be more compact than with 3-pin in order to keep the ball of the foot down. I suspect that some folks with the Transnordic BCX might end up leaving their 3-pin setups in the garage, but not the folks looking to ski the most challenging conditions.

Where were you able to find the black leather stiff old style boots? I’d give my left you know what to find a good pair.

I snatched ‘em for $20 off someone in Denver via Facebook marketplace. I see similar boots pop up there often enough here in Colorado.
