  • Aslan & I continue on from where we left off, having just completed the 3rd of 5 locks through Stoke On Trent, along the Trent & Mersey Canal.
    The thought of finding a mooring for the night is soon on my mind, as up to now I've already been cruising for 3 hours - since leaving the south-end of Harecastle tunnel.
    Fortunately, the remaining 2 locks are 'downhill' and as a result, are dispatched in short order.
    Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Stoke, we now enter much more peaceful and natural surroundings.
    Several miles later, the small town of Trentham is reached and even though it provides ample mooring opportunities, none are suitable for a weeklong stopover - and running the generator.
    Now with the hour getting late, one final lock negotiated and the light beginning to fade, I eventually arrive at the outskirts of Barlaston (opposite the Wedgwood factory), and the 'warming' sight of mooring rings.

    Hi Kevin. Once again I've thoroughly enjoyed this, your latest presentation. I'm increasingly aware through your videos, that canal living and cruising gives one a sense that has been lost for generations and that is the sense that in travelling this way, it's the journey, more than ever, that's the best part. Be it locks, lift bridges or just the cut itself that gives one that sense of calm that one simply cannot get on a motorway or even on a train.
    I have a book here, it's a book of photographs all about how nice Mallorca is. It was printed in 1970 and bought as a memento of a holiday there at the time. I hope you don't mind if I write the preface here, tweaking some words to reflect more accurately how they apply to the cut. This is for the benefit of anyone wondering what the attraction of traveling at walking pace really is...
    "Dear friends and readers. If you are, or imagine you are, a victim of neurasthenia. Deafened and confused by the noise of our modern civilisation and the urge to arrive more quickly at some place where you have nothing to do. If business has filled with numbers, the space in your brain that is intended for what we call intelligence. If the cinema has damaged your optic organism and the flickering has become chronic. Restlessness and worry will not let you live and you want to enjoy a little of the rest to which anybody in this World is entitled who has done no harm to anyone. Then follow me down to the canals of England where calm always reigns and men are never in a hurry, where the women never grow old. Where words are not wasted. Where the Sun stays longer and the moon moves more slowly, sleepy with idleness.
    This, dear readers, is the land of the canals of England, The 'Cut' and you're always welcome".
    Well I think that sums up at least my idea of what the canals are all about. Thank goodness the likes of Tom Rolt and his peers pioneered the notion that the crumbling canals could and should be saved. Thanks to him and people like him aided and abetted by current day users who show the canal system for what it really is, people like Country House Gent and others.
    As long as you and others show the system as it is in real time, the cut will remain the attraction that it truly is.
    Take care and stay safe
    From Bob in "cutless" Geordieland

I am concerned though, that you would put Aslan in harms way. Remember the boat, Orca? By the way, did you go to WaterWorld Resort and ride the water slides? Hello Alan and Sarah and it's very rewarding to hear you've enjoyed the series on Amazon. Welcome aboard and hope you enjoy Seasons 7 & 8 on CZcams. The uploading and filming order of S7 was a bit disjointed due to the pandemic but there is a playlist for it, which plays the videos in the intended order. Cheers again and thank you,

      Thanks for replying Kevin.
      Not many canals around us down in Devon, the one though in tiverton still has a horse drawn barge ride. Which we hope to do this year. Just watching the episode through Leicester with countless locks. Your not moaning at all!

    Thank you Kevin, just the tonic I needed this evening - a gentle phut phut from Aslan's engine and an agreeable pleasant watch of your continuing adventures 😊😊 err what would happen if you accidently became man overboard during your chimney lowering escapades? just a thought - but no demonstration please 🙄🙄😁😁

      Yes Rob, I've had similar thoughts before, especially if I fell off the back when the boat's moving. Can't exactly run after the boat in 4 feet of water. 🤔 Pleased you enjoyed the video.

    I used to doodle on paper about boy things like motorcycles, race cars and airplanes. I would never doodle on the walls or my body. I guess I've gotten old because I'm obviously in the minority. Keep on chuggin. Cheers buddy!

    If I'm honest Kevin, I cant stang Graffiti, I think it's the standard of drawing you would find 1yr old children with cravings drawing on walls hehe. Hope you are well buddy. Also, on those long straights without any boats, are you ever tempted to accelerate a little whilst nobody is watching?

    @craigsteele8912 Před 2 lety +1

    Kev. The pipe section across the top of the cabin, visible when you sit the camera on the roof top facing back, has bad bubbling corrosion. I feel a wee working Bee is called for. Cheers from NZ.

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 2 lety

      Hi Craig and thanks for your concern. The bubbling is the rear lip of the sliding hatch, a lump of steel with a diameter of about 1/2inch. The corrosion is on the surface and looks worse than it is. I touch it up and the other areas of green paint once of year. It's not an issue. 🙂

    I suppose if there's one advantage to graffiti, it's a good warning about where not to moor.

    I've been wondering how to repurpose the energy coming from the front waves or attaching something to the propeller to charge a dynamo to make energy that can be stored for electrical use. If a watermill can use it then with the travelling you do, then there must be a way to generate energy as your moving. Ive been wanting to buy a boat one day but if diesel or petrol or coal weren't available for a while, then I was wondering about water. Wind isn't always effective as is solar but combine it with wave energy and it might charge the engine as it goes and have some left over for electrical gadgets. Just musing.

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 11 měsíci

      The engine has an alternator that charges a bank of leisure batteries. 🙂

    It looks like the canals are full, that would affect the older bridge height. Lower water level equals greater clearance.

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 2 lety

      Indeed, often during prolonged dry spells the canals can drop 12 inches on occasion. Downside is this slows the boats down noticeably, which isn't always a bad thing.

    Hi Kevin. Looks like Stoke wasn’t a place to stop if you wanted peace and quiet. The place you eventually moored was much more suitable. Have you ever had to just moor for one night and then move on because it was just too noisy? Take care. Nick

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Nick. Yes the mooring was a fine spot for the week. No I've never moved because of noise, just cos of undesirable behaviour. 😁
