- Over the past year and change we've recorded over 30 episodes of our introspective series Heavily Inked. And while everyone we've interviewed has been fascinating in their own way, there is something incredibly captivating about listening to people who have blacked out significant parts of their body. We've collected bits and pieces of some of our favorite interviews talking about blackout tattoos and thrown them together. Enjoy.

No this is just addicts exposing their ADDICTION to one more thing in their lives 😂😂
Guy with torso and half neck.. most beautiful black work I've seen. I've black sleeve and all my respect goes to these beautiful people. It's over the threshold culturally, physically and mentally. So many cups of ink..
I really liked how clean it was. Amazing.
Tattooing is extremely therapeutic for me. I started late in life, compared to my friends and colleagues. Once I split with my wife at age 26, and was in/out of prescription pill withdrawal, I needed something to give me a sense of time, place, and purpose. While I don’t love the blackout tattoo work, the concept is beautiful. Getting tatted while in opioid withdrawal was fucking nuts. 19 months opioid free and looking forward to finishing sleeves. I’d love to travel to a different country for some stellar work this year. Happy 2023. Cheers, everyone.
hope ur doing well homie! sleeves coming along?
That's crazy mán just had to pop some oxycontin u know❤
@@jakered6500 Not as much tattooing as I normally would have. Ended up moving several states away and losing my main artists.
I’m still getting tattooed every 6-ish months, but they aren’t massive 5-10+ hour sessions.
Made three years opioid free recently.
Thanks for checking in!
Blackironmonk's space of untouched skin between his lips brings out his canines as he speaks; it's vampirish. The other streaks of skin between the black all add to the overall aesthetic. And the blacked out eyes are perfection. I dont really get the roots and leaf like shapes on his head, but he's undoubtedly the best blackout tattoo of this collection in my opinion.
Definitely not my thing, but is really wholesome to see people passionate about the art they choose to their bodies.
There are some really beautiful blackout pieces out there.

Wow, this is really Hardcore. I remove tattoos for a living and I'm working on a Blackout leg. He regrets it deeply. He knows it's going to take years to remove and he's ok with that. So far it's gray so progress is being made.
Regret is going to be brutal for these people
@@TheHSIHP You dont know that
@@snyder_fine_arti know, i have a dense black coverup and i start remove it immediately after it heal
feel like i waste my own skin
these people regret their old tattoo, so they black out their skin
too embarrassed to admit it so they just said it art " blah blah blah"
@@snyder_fine_art he isn’t saying everyone is going to regret it, but if they do have regret, it will be brutal. Sometimes you have to slow down when you read and make sure you understand what someone is saying..
I see it as a continuation of tribal from the 90's. Any time I hear people saying "I wanted it before it was cool" I get weary, tattoos should be cool for you regardless of if others are or were doing that kind of work before
Black outs aren't for me, but if they're for you, be yourself, for yourself. Nice to see people happy in their own skin.
Well technically if they were happy "In their own skin" they wouldn't get tattoos. Just saying.
@@fightthebully3331 Well, logically, someone can be happy in their own skin and choose to adorn it with ink. It's no different than being happy in your own home but adding decorations or furniture to further that happiness. Just saying.
@@DiscokriegYou can move furniture. This ain’t the right analogy.
Hoode's work looks so solid and consistent
That’s prolly why he has a billion year waiting list
@@ADR3N0CHRM3-_-ADDICT lol seriously, I’ve been waiting since last year. I go next week to him!
@@Steelewater …. Yeah I tried to get on over a year, I just ended up going to someone else… he did a good job.. got lucky I guess 🤷♂️
Seeing Valerio's work on Michaela was what inspired me to cover my sleeves and throat with blackout. It's the first time I've felt confident in my appearance. To the people who say it looks bad or it's pointless: guess what? It's not for you. It's for the people wearing it. And for me, personally, there's no better tattoo look than heavy blackwork. It looks striking.
I have a ton of tattoos. Blackout isn’t my jam, now, but that could totally change. And you’re totally right, it’s not for anyone else. Your body, your choice
@@Emcobb2 exactly! I got my sleeves done at 18 when full colour Japanese was my thing. Now, at 26, that's just not me. It's totally normal to change your style or grow bored of old tattoos. If people "don't get it", they're not supposed to.
@@DanielJBlackwood Dude 8 years is nothing, you are still a kid.
@@DontBeClueless514 I fail to see how that has anything at all to do with either of my comments.
@@DanielJBlackwood That how can you grew so tired and not "you" anymore.. You talk like you are all grown now. You might be bipolar more likely than "thats just not me" Lot of ppl getting tattooed for the wrong reason
I don’t have not 1 tattoo on my body, and don’t plan to-the blackout just looks so extreme!!!But we all have our own lives and live them the way WE want!!!Live and let live 💪
Fully support whatever sane person consents to do with their body, trusting an experienced and understanding artist. There’s something beautiful and simplistic in the brutality of blackout work like this. Hats off. That takes a lot of self awareness and trust 💪
I have full facial tattoos and I've a sleeve blacked out then white ink negative tattoos done over the top. For me I collect tattoos like someone who collects anything else. Its what they like to do. I've always worked and everyone I know says they don't see me as a person with facial tattoos but just as the person I am. It nice to see comments like yours and you're correct in it taking trust in an experienced artists. I had my face tattooed by Cammy Stewart from Stuart bros tattoo in Dundee Scotland his work with geometric patterns is amazing
I absolutely love 1:00 It has that comic book-supernatural-x-men villain-extraterrestrial look to it, and it has good proportions. Pretty clean and tasteful.
The black eyes are the cherry on top.
Perfect.
Totally agree. Look up Young Adam Smasher, he looks so much like him.
I really like all of their work. I appreciate being able to see the different styles and to hear their stories. It always blows my mind when you see such beautiful work like this. Such amazing saturation without their skin being totally trashed. It really is impressive.
I would NEVER let anybody tell me what ink I'm getting, or bully me into sitting longer than I want to. Creative suggestions are one thing, but a dictatorial stance is another.
Yeah, hearing that sort of shit rings alarm bells for me
Yeah creeps me out when someone treats someone else as just a canvas like it's not their body getting extremely altered and they have to live with it, you shouldn't have to convince someone that much to get a tattoo, they should want it
Most tattoo artists are like that
Not bully but I've 100% let my artists push and talk me into sitting for longer.
It's important to know when your done but sometimes you wanna bitch out because you didn't prepare enough for the session and they give you that extra strength or confidence to keep going and to push yourself. Never let someone bully you and never let someone force you if you know you gotta tap out but I've yet to regret being convinced to sit longer.
@@rorydonaldson2794 was he talking about sitting for longer in the video tho? cause it was my understanding he was talking about getting more work done, like at 5:26 he said he wanted some negative space areas and the artist basically said no, you're getting all this blacked out. Like what you're saying makes sense but what he was talking about sounds different
I, like most of the people in this thread have a ton of tattoo work. But this blackout art is absolutely beautiful. The level of pain and saturation that goes into this work is a dedication most people can never mirror. Hats off to the artists, just awesome looking work.
Blackout art is beautiful? No, it's literally not. Not hating, just saying. It's all the same, nothing special about it.
@@JesusChrist_IsTruth-LoveForALL Some people consider it beautiful. You have your opinion, but your opinion isn't fact.
So much respect to the people who followed either a vision or are just rockin their blackout since the years just ended up that way everyone looks great.
I blacked out 1/4th on both of my arms from negative space. I genuinely like the aesthetic of it & the black out blends in with my other pieces
A 1/4th? Ya don’t say….
@@Frankfoot986 yeah half up my upper arm sleeve is black & the bottom half is roses. If you were to divide your arms into 4 sections. That’s the best way to describe it.
Our generation is gonna be some tatted up grandparents/seniorcitizens
40% of Gen Xers have at least one tattoo. The percentages only go up since then.
Exactly
They won't live long enough
And I love it
Some of these guys look like straight out a SciFi video game or movie , its badass
I enjoy watching these. Only because each artist have their own storybook on their body with their artwork.
I've just started my blackout project and after every session I can't wait to go to the next level. It's really the most addictive tattoo I've done
It’s funny when people act like blackout is new. I’ve been watching it and wanting it since the early 90’s.
I don’t have any tattoos but I really like the way they look . Great art .
Appreciate ppl like you. You dont have any but that doesnt mean you cant appreciate good art
Whereas some ppl who dont have tattoos think they know it all and want to give you a lesson on why tattoos look bad and wont look good when youre old..
@@Tkenny35 yeah i always think the same, i have no tattoos (i want some though) but i really love the art and i like tattoos even if its not my style. just cuz i dont want it on my skin doesnt mean that its universaly bad for every human, and when someone straight up hates and rants about it or trys to lecture you even tough they dont even have tattoos themselves i always think "who are they to think that their opinion is so important, why do they think, they have the right to do that even though the tattooed person feels totaly confortable in their skin"
Really lol I think these people need to talk to a therapist and just spend the money to get them lasered off
@@perrycoffey5410 nah man, that you clearly don't understand that some people think differently than you... They don't need a therapist to understand what they want on their skin.
@@perrycoffey5410 I cant look at these people and say they need therapy. I just dont like the style of art.
Amzing video. I only have six tattoos, but I respect the art and I know how hard it is to get true solid black. The dream is to have a negative space sleeve so solid black is a MUST.
Case by case basis for me but I've seen some where it was just a shin or a forearm and it looked really good, that blackedout diagonal torso is amazing; also I don't care how many sessions it takes, pack it in solid.
I've been getting tattooed for 25 years now and have too many to count...while I personally would never go this extreme (face/neck/hands) I have the utmost respect in their choices and find it fascinating. Blackout is super badass. I may get my left lower leg done that way eventually. I guess I still like the option to cover with clothing when possible.
Wow thay are really passionate about their tattoo. Great videos thanks for up loads mate.
The ultimate sacrifice is dying while saving someone else's life, not tattooing yourself. Don't care what you do with your bodies but don't put yourselves on a pedestal for a cosmetic change.
thank you jayphil very cool
If you call it cosmetic change it is clear you don’t know shit about the history and background of tattooing.
That was really interesting. I think you have to have balls to do blackout. It’s not my jam but I respect it.
“Whatever he wants to do, he does.” No thanks. My body, our collaboration.
I love tattoos it’s a form of self expression and passion and love for certain things. Whether it’s family or friends or beliefs or simply makes the person happy.
At 45 I've seen a lot of styles come then completely go. Does make me wonder if black outs will stand the test of time or just reflect a very specific era, like barbed wire tats etc
It's a fad
@@TheHSIHP yup
blackout just shout " tattoo regrets" to me
I almost tapped out with part of my blackout tattoo. Luckily I was almost done, so my artist was like "You are being such a champ!! Just a little bit longer, and you are done." So I stuck it out and got it done. It was so "spicy" as my artist would say. Lol. I love my blackout tattoo now, and I'm not quite done with it yet!!
i have some blackwork and during it, i honestly entered into like a zen state and almost fell asleep LOL. my artist said it was unusual but maybe my pain tolerance is crazy high because i have chronic pain. kind of cool because one of my main weaknesses has become my strength in getting tattoos! can't wait to have a full body suit. i'll feel more like myself as weird as that sounds.
Hey!! That's amazing! I'm sure it looks great, but do you mind me asking a question? How is the healing process? If I am struggling with my back tattoo healing right now, I wonder how it is a full black. 👍😊
@@MaCad364 my artist uses second skin/tegaderm and i've never even scabbed or had an "itchy phase" as i make sure to use a good thick body butter (hustle butter). i think everyone is different though. i would say it's definitely worth it. hoping you heal well! backs are hard to heal in my experience as you're always pressing into it unless you sit funny lol. my arms and legs all healed no problem though.
Wow, thanks for answering!! Yeah, true about sitting down funny lol I just laughed hard thinking about it lol 😂 I’m sure your tattoo must look so amazing!! And lucky you!! My second skin still gives me itchy lol my nightmare starts is when I remove that skin lol 😅😂
I've got Japanese sleeves and it's hard for me to imagine getting this kind of work being especially painful, aside from the length of the session. Line work is painful. I'm always super relieved when it goes to getting color added. It's literally like "whew" thank God.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I love it, especially over other work.
Im adamant on covering my whole body. For me, I know what im sacrificing and it's worth it. I just want to be me, despite what I look like.
I've also healed a lot mentally and emotionally through getting tattooed. Long way to go yet for a bodysuit but can't wait to get more blackwork done.
How does tattooing "heal"?
@@shoutatthesky For me it is meditative because you are present in the moment (because of the pain) for hours at a time. And when I started getting tattooed a lot I was very depressed so the aftercare gave me a reason to get out of bed and build a routine around. As time went on it became more about building the image in the mirror to what I liked so it pushed me to workout more and in turn eat healthier. Not to mention the comfort of being accepted into a group of like minded people.
They also boost your ability to heal wounds if you get tattooed regularly.

These tattoos are awesome. I’m not a person that wears any tattoos except for my eyebrows, but these tattoos are works of art. Thank you for sharing.❤❤❤❤❤
I just cant get over those heavy face tattoos. I really cant see why someone would want that. But hey, everyone is different and that is the beauty of life i guess.
I absolutely love tattoos and just seeing these people here just renews if not strengthen my love for tattoos I wanna get something kind of like that in the future
Basically blackout tattoos are made to cover up old tattoos that you´re bored of and set a new start to get new full black ones that you will get bored of too but you won´t be able to cover up.
I really don’t care what anyone does but, when it comes to your eyes that’s really dangerous to mess with!
Of course you don't yea the eyes is extremely stupid and people who do that need therapy
I know we all got our favorite Inked artists but michele is my #1
As usual, Americans take it to the extreme. Nowhere else on the planet but here. Thousands of years of tatting with indigenous cultures respecting the meaning and process, and Americans gotta use it to work out their psychological issues.
So you admit that multiculturalism is ultimately detrimental?
America is lost
I can't wait to do mine
i have one small tattoo on my wrist and i am curently busy with a full traditional Japanese dragon sleeve on my left arm but i am also really intrested in black outs. i am starting to like it more and more. especially after watching "Ephemeral Remy". his black outs with color added looks insanely good!
Remy is walking proof a blackout could be used as a restart. You go to an artist that knows what their doing after the blackout is healed you can hit it with damn near whatever you want
The dude with the neck up to the chin is OG

Amazing tattoos
I don't have any tattoos and I don't plan on getting any but I love watching this stuff and if I was going to do it it would be solid blackwork. Just appeals to me.
This was cool ❤️🔥
I'm a Tattoo artist, i got half of my left arm black all by myself. As long as you didn't step on anybody go for it. 🖤
Some great art. congrats to everyone
I have some blackwork done and let me tell you something. It's not only the outcome and the look of it afterwards, the 8 hours + of blackout work process is an interesting mental test.
Giving your life is the ultimate sacrifice, drawing on your skin is just drawing on your skin
Who knows what they really mean by sacrifice... Probably soul sacrifice or something... Everyone always feels they have to go to the extreme to be different for some reason.
This is not sacrifice, Definitely not ultimate sacrifice.
The ultimate sacrifice was the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on the cross of calvary.
This is sacrifice, that a man would die for the sins of the world.
What these people have is a demonic possession that is telling them to destroy the temple of God.
This is sacrifice that a man would give his life to save the very soul of these very unfortunate people that are as lost as a person can possibly be. These people are living so deep in darkness the pleasure they seek is to completely black out their bodies.
And the only way to match the darkness on the inside of these people is to equally darken the outside of themselves.
The guy at the 9:00 mark said people look at me like I'm crazy, but I'm not crazy. I agree 100% He is not crazy he is possessed by a demonic spirit.
I pray he will REPENT of his sins and come to Jesus. And be baptized in the name of Jesus and be filled with the holyspirit. And then he will be cleansed of his sins and the blood of Jesus will wash him whiter than snow!

Many people express the idea that some of their older tattoos no longer represent them... I have to wonder if anyone will feel that way about blackout someday?
Most people not all but most look at you with honest irrest Some of us look at you with admiration that you went through that for what you love. It sucks to get stared at but mostly I is not malicious just curiosity
Love it !!!
I love all my tattoos too much to even think about covering them up. Even the crap ones I did myself.
Seems like they’re trying to find a deeper meaning when it’s as simple as they all are addicted to tattoos and pain... they were also covering up one mistake for what will most likely be another. They can’t say that now because it’s done. No turning back just pushing it further. The scribbling on the face has no rhyme or reason it’s a kink torture method thing that I’ve looked up before after seeing the lady that says she trust the artist to do whatever and I love it. She looks sad though imo.
I think she and the others have been through some horrible trauma. It’s very unfortunate.
Spot on, this is self destruction and attention seeking, a visual expression of borderline personality disorder. Inability to regulate emotions and self esteem without using others.
I'd be worried about vitamin D synthesis and being able to easily diagnosis skin cancer.
Art is more important. You gotta make sacrifices
Both of my forearms are done. Two four hour sessions back to back days . Hurt like hell! Thank god for the OREO COOKIES on the second day!! It’s my midlife crisis!!! And love looking at myself in the mirror again!! It was a cover up of old stuff that wasn’t me anymore.

I’m in the process of getting a lot of blackout work done. Let me tell you, if you do it, do it by someone who does nothing else except blackout work. My entire forearm has been blacked out 2 whole times and it still looks like patchy trash. Go to hoode in Philly or swope in Ohio.
i have some blackout work by a smaller artist. i would just say definitely look at their portfolio and even better if you can meet someone they've tattooed! that was how i knew he could do it and it would heal well- seeing it on healed skin irl. but yeah it's nowhere near as easy as some people think it is.
Why would you do that I think it's a real dumb idea do you not want to work or something
