  • In this video I'm in Ortona, an Italian town in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo and more precisely in Contrada Moro-San Donato where I visit the Canadian Military Cemetery and the Church of San Donato. The introduction of the video illustrates a view from Ortona on the Trabocchi Coast towards the municipality of San Vito Chietino (CH). At 0:37 seconds we can see the Mother Church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and San Vito Martire. The imposing and monumental canadian cemetery was built in 1946 in memory of the war victims, the Allied soldiers, engaged in the 1943 battle of Ortona against the Germans. It was first built in January 1944 by the Canadian Corps, after the fallen soldiers were amassed in temporary pits following the battle. Later, in 1946, it took on its current appearance with its characteristic and rigorous order. The access plaque bears the inscription "MORO RIVER CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY". The cemetery is made up of walls with an altar bearing the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" and a central shrine decorated with a cross. A small temple on the left side tells the story and the war events and keeps the cemetery register. The tombs are arranged in parallel rows and each, identical to the other, bears the emblem of the Canadian flag and the name of the deceased. A coeval military cemetery, however owned by the Britons, is located in the countryside of Torino di Sangro, towards Vasto (CH).
The church of San Donato was completely rebuilt in 1946, respecting the original simple structure of the eighteenth-nineteenth century with a single nave and a gabled roof. A very particular curiosity is the access to the Canadian cemetery with the road that runs along the double arched pronaos of the church. The church has a rectangular layout with a single nave, and a lateral bell tower with a pyramidal spire. The interior of the church is almost simple with a single rectangular hall and ends with the frescoed apse in the highest portion. In the fresco, of recent invoices, we find the church of San Donato and the coast of Ortona with the Basilica-Cathedral of San Tommaso Apostolo. The church preserves a statue of San Donato and a statue of the Madonna. The recurring decorative motif in the church tiles is the Canadian flag crest. The bell tower of the church is located on the right side together with the sacristy. It looks like a tower surmounted by a pyramidal spire. In the belfry we find a swing bell that can be played manually with the rope. I have no information on the Foundry and on the year of merger but, almost certainly, seeing the handles and the shape I can attribute it to the Marinelli Foundry of Agnone. The bell note is an MI4. In the video we see the expanse performed by the Subscriber at 9:30 (6:50 minutes) and at 9:45 (12:17 minutes) for the Sunday mass of 10 am. In the last played, always performed by the Subscriber, for the the beginning of the mass (minute 17:01) we see a short sequence of strokes and a short expanse. As you notice the clapper spatula very much and unfortunately I was not aware before the execution of the plays. I invite you not to make unnecessary controversies since the problem has already been reported and above all to have a mature and decent attitude in the comments. Many thanks for the opportunity to have been able to ring the bell that filled me with great joy. Bells are the voice of God who calls and urges the people to come together for the happy and sad events of life. May they be a message of peace and faith and consolation for those who feel alone.
    Good vision!

Grazie mille!
