Is there a reason why many trad players do not clean their fiddles?
The reason is no less than a case of unadulterated laziness, Tom Greene. It doesn't enhance the tone of the instrument or make you a better player; indeed, it will eventually destroy the instrument.
Clean? Did you mean buff, because I am sure they are clean. Remember it's traditional.
