The Stingray is so solid in design, even the cheapest versions are better than boutique models from other manufacturers.

So I bought a Sub Stingray 5. I Put EMGs a BTS EQ and a PBass soapbar EMG right in front of the music man pickup.I also added a AlBridge.I love this bass and so do the guys in my 10 piece Tower/EWF, Chicago band. It sounds fat and punchy yet it has total clarity and definition. And it plays like a dream, low action no fretbuzz. This bass will be on every one of my gigs from now on. I will still bring one of my Jazz Basses but they will see a lot less action.

I just ordered a 5 string Sterling Sub series. I play mostly J Basses so this is a real departure for me, but this video gives me the feeling that I might enjoy my new bass.

Awesome review, jayme. 😎🤘🏻🎸There were a few times I thought about buying a sterling ray bass. I’ve tried one out a few years ago at a guitar center and I thought it sounded great. Especially with overdrive. I might consider adding one to my arsenal.

..i owned a few sub sterlings over the years, they were all good - great playability, great sound - but for me, I missed sometimes a little bit more mids. So then the sterling34 by musicman Stingray ( not sub) with a roasted maple Neck and a 3band came out...and this thing literally blews me away! For me there is absolutely no reason now to buy a "original" and way more expensive Stingray, because the sound, craftsmanship and playability of this sterling 34 is simply outstanding. These basses are phantastic workhorses and I really love them! 🖤

There is a reason, ray 34 even with his roasted neck and his shiny sparkle is wired in series so the tone is NOT the tone of a real stingray, I noticed it I soon as I plugged it in I and was a lil disappointed, it's a 1K more $ bass lol, fuck sterling

The thing is you don't even have to stop there with the SUBs - stick a John East MM 2Band preamp in there, and a Nordstrand MM pickup, you're still coming in at way less money than the next model up, and you've got really great classic Ray tones.

Great review! I've always loved the build quality and tone of Ernie Ball Music Man basses, but couldn't ever afford them. 😕 Then, several years ago, I tried one of the original S.U.B. basses, got hooked, and then ordered a Sterling by Music Man Ray35HH (Pearl White, black pickguard, and roasted maple neck), and I LOVE IT! I've got it strung up with EB Slinky Flatwound strings. Fantastic value for the money!

The Low End Lobster took a bunch of thr black SUB basses and suped them up with new preamps and pick ups and they sounded just as good and in some case's better than an American Stingray for a fraction of the price

I have 2 of them now but both HH double hum bucker versions with the 5 position switch. I have a 5 string and a 4 string that has flats on it now. I'm a big fan and really dig them! People can be nit-picky but for around 1/8 the price they are close enough for my purposes. They also seem to have very good and solid build quality, nice necks, etc.especially for that price point! I am curious how you had the pre-amp set for the various tones you demonstrated? All set flat? Probably not?

I have a few basses that were made in Indonesia and very happy with them. They are well made with solid construction. I avoid the ones made in China as the quality to me is sub-par. The Ray 4 will be my next bass.

Muddy..? This bass sound very articulated. On the contrary - for someone used to Fender basses (pun intended!) it may at first appear to be a bit too aggressive and in your face. (I have a couple of jazz basses, a p-bass as well as Sterling’s big brother Stingray Special. The Music Man basses are far from muddy…)
