Fixing the butane lighter on a Victorinox Campflame

  • Hopefully that video will help anybody looking to fix their Campflame or Swissflame.
    I plan to add a butane lighter to the XAVT project that I started a while back and I plan to add one to the custom SAK that I plan to make for myself. What do you think about having a butane lighter on a Swiss Army Knife? Too dangerous? This model was actually never sold by Victorinox in the US because it did not have a "safety feature". LOL

    That has definitely earned you a another subscription, I just joined your
    channel. I have a Campflame that I have never tried to use. I am guessing
    It probably doesn’t work, It has always driven me nuts that Victorinox
    won’t service them. Now that I see someone able to fix one it is even
    more frustrating. One thing I have heard is that the use of cheap butane
    can clog up the works. Anyhow five stars to you for this video. I probably
    won’t try to fix mine but knowing it is possible is great news

Well, first of all, my complements for your continued growth, well deserved...this is a beautiful knife; I am sure it would have sold well in the States...I have seen it in pictures, 1st time in a video, thanks! I don't see any problems with using this lighter, an advantage to have it...what is the difference between a Swissflame and a Campflame? Interesting the technology and engineering that goes into this...my complements to you for figuring it out...is the "screen" that popped out a type of filter? I am looking forward to seeing your completed XAVT and your personal custom SAK projects using these lighters...Good job!

    I've never heard of this model before, and that it ever got made surprises me because a Mini Bic will fit virtually anywhere, so why would one want a lighter built into one's knife?
    As with any tool, reliability is everything, and it surprises me that Victorinox failed in this.
    Mini Bic and Mini Magnesium & Ferro Rod combo would be preferable to this, it occupies too much tool space for my liking.

    Hello , wonderful job . I subscribe

  • @nicksantitoro
    @nicksantitoro Před 2 lety +1

    Very nice job. Why is there cotton in that brass tube in the first place? Do other butane lights have that too? It looks like the lighter would work without the cotton in there. Maybe the cotton acts as a filter for particles in the fuel. That would explain why some peoples clog up I guess.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  Před 2 lety +2

      The cotton in the brass tube acts like a filter and it also is what "regulates" the flow of the butane. As you tighten down the adjustment screw, it compacts the cotton to reduce the flow of the gas, then when you loosen up the adjustment screw it lets more gas flow.
      I don't know if all lighters have this system. I have never fixed a butane lighter before. 🤣 This was originally just an experiment. Take it apart and try to find the problem. 😝 After I successfully fixed two, I decided to record the process of the third for others to see.

    • @nicksantitoro
      @nicksantitoro Před 2 lety +1

      @@FittoSurvive Thanks for the reply! They should have made something like a piston that rides in a cone shaped sleeve to regulate flow if that makes sense, it wouldn’t have a filter, but I don’t know if other butane lighters do either. Sounds like the cotton is not rebounding causing it to bunch up and not allow the gas through. I would try to find a way to reassemble the knives with screws that way you can open them again if it stops working again. The pressure from the gas might compress the cotton over time causing the clog.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  Před 2 lety

      @@nicksantitoro That would make sense actually. It's unfortunate that Victorinox discontinued the model instead of finding a solution for it.
      Yeah, it is inevitable that the cotton will get compacted. Assembling the knife with torx screws is a good idea to be able to service the lighter.

    The vast majority of the regular everyday problem with refillable butane lighters is as you know substandard butane used to refill them. They are fragile, far more expensive and difficult that the throw away models😂 When I carried and used one daily it was a Rhino lighter and I used the most refined fuel I could obtain. Now if I use a refillable lighter its lighter fluid based peanut style for the outdoors and longevity of fuel between refilling. I'd rather have more tools in that space. I don't smoke, and so day to day, I have no need for a lighter. I don't like butane lighters anyway. I'd much rather have a Zippo, because it won't get blown out in the wind. I on principle, like arc lighters, the idea of only needing to fill it with electricity, rather than fluid or gas is great, but in practice they're not so great.
