  • Unboxing and using the LNS 150A injection molding machine for the very first time.
    The PIM-SHOOTER™ Model 150A, Toggle Clamp, plastic pellets, and mold frame were purchased from here:
    www.techkits.com/
    Special thanks to LNS Technologies for the MakerBot mold and samples!
    This machine can inject a variety of plastics, including ABS, Acetal, PLA, HDPE, PS PP, LDPE, TPE, and EVA. It allows for the use of cheaper aluminum molds, as well as DIY silicone and epoxy molds in blank aluminum frames. (3D Printed molds can be used, if you attach some type of metal interface to prevent melting of the printed part.)

    I'm glad you are concerned with making quality figures with longevity, Crafsman. I got a pricey figure from a prominent manufacturer-first action figure I'd bought in 20 years-and right out of the box a swivel joint snapped in the hip. Snuffed that figure collecting spark right then and there. Of all the problems in the world, I'm happy to take that privileged one, but I'm glad you're not going to be doing that to folks who lay down the dough to purchase one of your figures. Right on, man.

      I appreciate this so much. There's the argument that since "designer figures" are sold to people over 14 (to bypass the Consumer Product Safety certification) that they won't be played with, and strength shouldn't be that important. But even if it's never taken out of the package, I still really like the idea of a figure being as TOUGH as possible. :)

    • @DKarkarov
      @DKarkarov Před 4 lety

      @@SteamPoweredFox That's a big fat no. Casino dice are made to insanely exacting standards, and have to be as close to perfectly fair as possible. That's why they cost so much despite being machine made.

    This is so cool! Add me to the list of people who want to see a video about using recycled plastics!
    Also, is it just me, or does it seem like maybe Crafsman has his mold lateral stop (dunno the actual name... it's the hex-head bolt with the black knob on the end, used to keep the mold in place horizontally) installed backward? Seems like the black plastic knob would be intended for touching fingers, not a (potentially) hot metal mold.

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  Před 4 lety +58

      You are 100% right about the mold stop. Plastic knob end should go to the outside, metal to the inside (touching the mold).
      It hasn't caused any issues, but it is COMPLETELY backwards. (Well, it WAS... in the video. Fixed now.)
      Can't believe I even set it up that way. I'm going to pin your comment for educational purposes. Thank you! :)

I'm also an artist/toy maker, and I'm considering investing my stimulus checks into an injection mold setup since art is my living (been casting with resin since 2008)...the main thing holding me back is I am hoping to find a slightly larger machine, but mainly I want a affordable way I know will work well for creating the molds. I know you're planning on releasing a video on creating the silicone mold for inside the metal mold frame...but do you mind telling me if you're having any issues with the cast pieces being warped from the pressure of the injector? I am really eager to get one of these, and I'm trying to find out more about the possibility of doing silicone molds. Thanks for your time, and the awesome videos, you're a sweetheart! @TheCrafsMan  Před 4 lety +4

      @@angelapileggi6031 Hello there! I really like how you're thinking. I completely understand the desire to go for a larger shot size. (If you're feeling very adventurous, you can look at the designs used by Precious Plastics and them. Fairly LARGE parts are possible with that setup.) As far as the silicone mold, I'm editing that video now and I can say that, even with Mold Star (not designed for heat), I've had repeated success. The possible down-side (and it's different for each mold - chunky vs. thin parts) is the hold-down time is extended, to keep pressure against the object while it cools. Cooling may take longer (silicone vs. metal) and melted plastic will want to come back out the top. Not a huge issue.
      BUT, I'm also going to mention in the video - and will tell you now - that things like Mold Max 60 (more firm, withstands over 500 degree heat) or high-heat EPOXY... probably even better! :)
      I appreciate your kind words, and I sincerely hope this information is helpful to you in your upcoming (ad)ventures! :D

He was a tool & die maker and machinist so my project ended up being about extrusion molding, stamping, injection molding and lots of other "how we make all the things" stuff lol. It was hard work, and took months, but he was a patient teacher (mostly lol), and we actually got to visit manufacturers and see the processes in action! I won second prize in the state science fair and he was so impressed with my work that he taught me how to use most of the machines in the shop. Crafsman, I worked at a plastics factory a couple of years ago, and seeing the color change moment brought the memory of doing a color swap mid-shift--we would use a so-called 'purge' mix that when loaded into the feed hoppers would push out the residual color from before, and then allow us to put the fresh mix to melt for the next product. We also routinely recycled scrap material with grinders that would make tiny chips that would then be fed back into the feed at a particular percentage, depending on the product. We would feed the machines from very large cardboard boxes with big vacuum hoses.

    I could listen to this guy all day, his voice is like a lullaby! Just got into 3d printing, after doing molding and casting. Really want to top it off with injection molding. After working in and injection molding factory in the past. I think I could put some of that old knowledge to new use.

    As someone that owns a manual bench top injection molding machine I'm looking forward to your next video. Machining your own metal molds is time consuming (and making metal filled epoxy molds is as well). Technology has finally reached the point where we can create 3d printed mold inserts at a relatively affordable price. ....better late than never.
