I hadn’t been aware that the Black & Tans were shipped to Palestine after the War of Independence, until I read it recently in ‘Legacy of Violence - A History of the British Empire’. The book also refers to the fact that Zionist agents, who were fighting the British, were inspired by the IRA (as were Indian nationalists). Three Zionist agents were sentenced to death following an explosion I think at a hotel, and one of them referred to the IRA struggle from the dock. The book devotes quite a bit to the action of the British in Palestine and is well worth reading to understand some of the current situation there.

@@TheLastAngryMan01 There's also a darker side to connections between the IRA and zionism. The Stern Gang opposed the British presence in Palestine long before the outbreak of the war but as WW2 progressed, some felt that they needed to do more against Britain than assassinations and bombings. AT the same time Sean Russell was talking to high ranking staff in Berlin, hoping to get backing to open a second front against the UK, the Stern gang sent a letter to Germany proposing an alliance - knowing full well who they were dealing with, It's a very strange episode which is never mentioned. Dev had interned most of the IRA (2000) by then and Russell's mission failed but it has been used to smear Ireland recently, conflated with Dev's personal visit to Kempel, the German ambassador. The story of Ireland's neutrality is deeply complex and willfully misunderstood by many in Israel these days, it would seem. The Black and Tans burned Cork 19 years before WW2 started and Britain waged a trade war against the Free State between 1932-38. AN alliance with Churchill was impossible. The Holocaust had not happened, America remained neutral until attacked.

As a sovereign state? Before the present it was British Mandate, before that Ottoman territory, before that Crusader, Byzantine, Roman, and Judea and Israel. The thing is, the Palestinians were there and they are human beings who deserve to have the right to live where they live, without violence, but the Jews did not come from chicken eggs in the desert, they have a connection with the land and an origin of expulsion and persecution, They went there for a reason. Their government is a result of many things but the State is there, it is real, it should not suffer violence, it is a fact. Killing people is not protest. Now netanyahu is wrong, he needs to be removed and the Palestinian state does have the right to exist. What happens is people forget that it's not black and white, there are people, cultures and a lot involved. Was Palestine also a colonial invention, or do you think that 22 Arab countries with the same language, “culture and ethnicity” are something that occurred without colonialist intervention?

Similar to most English colonialism, Palestine was a creation of the British. So-called Palestinians are historically ethnically and nationalistic from Egypt and/or Jordan. Prior to the British creation of Palestine, it did not exist.
For those that say Palestinians = historical Philistines, you are wrong. But, if you insist on going down that rabbit hole, the Philistines originated in the Greek isles.
For Catholic Irish to equate themselves and the fight for their freedom from the British does not equate to the Palestinian plight. Over 80% of Palestinians voted for terrorist rule of Hamas who is in their 8th year of a 4 year term. Their government is using them as human shields and steeling the aid being sent to them. Israel gave up their land to said “Palestinians” in a peace agreement and moved out of the area. They jacked up their own land. Then supported an elected terrorist government in breaking that treaty on 10/7.
Please study more about Israeli/“Palestinian”/British history before equating this current situation to the legit freedom fighters of Ireland.

I have to say I'm disappointed by your disclaimer at the beginning of the video. The idea that you must remain completely neutral in the context of, as you put it very safely, "what's going on in the world right now," seems unnecessary. What's going on is a genocide. And for an educational channel to refuse to take a side against genocide is to implicitly teach your audience to do the same.
That said, I understand and respect your mission to keep the focus of the video on history. Not everyone needs to be an explicitly political channel. It's just strange to hear you repeatedly apologize for the timing of your video. I would argue that the timing makes it all the more important to highlight the historical ties between Ireland and Palestine, and I thank you for deciding to release the video.

Pleasing everyone is literally impossible. Contradicting that, at the end of the day, I run an Irish history channel, so current affairs are by no means a part of what I do. Of course I could choose to cover current affairs also, but I choose not to. I don’t want any limelight in the world of current affairs. I agree with what the community said. Education is never a bad thing, and it’s exactly what we need right now. I did not know of these links to Palestine. It makes sense that there would be links considering how pervasive the British Empire was in the world.
The state of the world right now is frightening, which is why we need these kinds of videos now more than ever. It’s so easy to separate ourselves out and pretend that we have no connections to other parts of the world, but that simply is not the case.
I am continually impressed with your ability to speak on such delicate topics in a factual manner. It’s clear how much thought you put into the content you create, and I as a fellow Irish Historian it makes me so happy and proud to see that.

The point I'd make is that a nation is not a piece of territory. Rather it is a people. The Jews are the quintessential nation. They can trace their Hebrew ancestry back three thousand years.
Palestine is the name of a piece of territory (in fact just one of many names throughout history). Just because some people live in a territory does not qualify them to be a nation.

I'm sure they have observed the peace process in NI and are doing everything possible to prevent a similar result in the middle east. These people want you divided by any means, whether it is religion, caste, class, race etc.
