The teddy boy days were fun, happy times where young people simply enjoyed the music and actually danced together. We had work, spent our money on clothes, a beer or three, dated girls, bopped the night away and then back to work on Monday and then along came a mortgage, family and routine. You can witness in these videos, we actually smiled and would you believe it, had conversation with our friends. Coffee bars and motor bikes, big cars and Craven A, friendships that lasted beyond midnight, drainpipes, brothel creepers and petticoats, politics were for others, we had Rock & Roll.

Great days, I was a member of the Chosen Few MC at the time and often frequented the Bailey Bar before heading to The Pound Club. Big Bear was always there, and still see him the odd time at the custom bike show in Belfast, keep on rockin'!
nice to see the Belfast boys great looking scene. we had and still do a great scene in Edinburgh Scotland we had the Glasgow boys and some of the guys from Newcastle in England used to come up to Scotland and party and we used to put them up at our houses the chicks never get much of a mention but the girls looked great and sexy looking.

Enjoyed this watching this video as myself and a few others are actually in it several times. Also noticed that a lot was copied from the short film made by the Northern Ireland arts council called Greenisland Rock back in the early 80s as i have the Original video that they made.
you can always tell an original '50's Teddy Boy from the Showaddywaddy clowns of this era (as seen here). Nothing beats the original style. We didnt have bright blue, red and pink drapes, never had skin tight trousers, never had exaggerated sideburns almost touching our chins, never had thick soled brothel creepers, never had tattoos, ear-rings or hair onto our shoulders. Showaddywaddy have a lot to answer for. On a positive note, the original style is making a little comeback.

I grew up in the 70's and, for a long time, thought that the Teddy Boys of that era simply copied the original 50's look. Recently, on a nostalgic whim I wanted a pair of creepers just like the ones I grew up with, only to discover from a book by Ray Ferris and Julian Lord that the original (George Cox, I think) creepers had soles of no more than one inch thick! I learned a lot about the original Teddy Boys from that book and, as you say, the 50's Teds didn't sport ultra long sideburns or wear brightly coloured drapes etc. Bit of an eye opener as I grew up with Showaddywaddy, Mud, etc. ! I think Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood kind of highjacked the original look and exaggerated it for punk, maybe. Still, I grew up in the 70's, so for me a pair of thicker crepe shoes was nostalgic, and I eventually found a pair and bought them! Not the original 50's look, but a part of my own youth I guess, which is what I wanted. The book is a really good read!
