      The Barcgal engine basically became a pseudo Ride-Deck after the introduction of Pongal: A g1 that for CB1 moves itself to soul to search Soul Saver Dragon from deck.
      Barcgal superior Rides Blaster Blade from deck, Pongal searches Soul Saver Dragon, you got your ride to G3 secured just by having Barcgal as your FV and a Pongal in hand. While you're at it, Pongal + Barcgal sets up the 5 soul for Soul Saver Dragon turn 3 so you'd prepare a board beforehand so the moment you first ride Soul Saver you got the skill full power. +5k to 3 rearguards sounds like child's play in 2023 but in 2011-2012 that was about the most aggro you could get at the time.
      Granted, damage denial and a bit of early control would severely reduce the efficiency of that engine but I'm pretty sure those concepts were much less understood at that time.

    That's what I like about the original CFV anime. It taught you more about the game as it went. Clan-mixing, the importance of different triggers, potential strategies. It's probably the best companion show to a card game that I've seen.

    The Asura Kaiser build that took the most tops at the time actually started Barcgal as he was not restricted until Set 2. Since the Barcgal/Flogal/Llew combo could guarantee riding to your Grade 2 Blaster Blade, you only ran two Grade 2s in the deck (two copies of Blaster Blade in case one was damage checked), and filled the rest of the slots with Grade 3s in order to hit Asura Kaiser's restand more often. Popular choices included Voidmaster to force the opponent to discard, Dragonic Overlord to wipe the opponent's front row, and both Juggernaut Maximum and Gancelot as they returned themselves to the deck which allowed for more Grade 3 checks. Unfortunately the deck was luck-based by its very nature and also had little shield to guard with as you both ran a large number of G3s and had no access to a Perfect Guard, so it didn't return the results a lot of people hoped for. Still a very interesting deck nonetheless.

    • @CurlyHairedVanguard
      @CurlyHairedVanguard  Před 10 měsíci

      Took the most tops? do you mean at like locals or some kind of official event?
      Im guessing this Asura Kaiser deck didnt start till set 2? since there was only 2 g3 nova grapppler units; however they got more in set 2? Since Asura kaiser says it needs to check a g3 Nova grappler unit specifically

      the funny thing with VG up until the cross rides, was people didn't run PGs A. because they cost so much but also if you notice the power gain on cards was so minimal while triggers were fairly substantial shields that there was little reason to drop a PG as Overlord against almost anythingwhen a single trigger makes it a 2 to pass or no pass

    I will say I definitely want to give a shout to niche VCs or popular rear g3's like Voidmaster and Tyrant Deathrex. Voidmaster was mainly good during this time w/ the g1 they gave cause of the fact discarding was so good against your opponent, especially since all they required was CB1 and just have less cards then your opponent when most of time when your about to rush you probably will have less cards, and this created since really nice hit pressure on your opponent cause it could potentially rip important cards from your hand to guard or even follow up w/ next turn. Tyrant Deathrex is mainly just cause as a VC he made some nice number being able to be a 15k vc on attack plus boost for 5k-8k makes him 22-23k so even on Overlord who's 11k base needed to throwdown at least 15k or more to guard. Too bad during this time his only benefit on retiring a rear for hitting was the g2 that came with him this set, but as a Beater when your opponents on 5 damage those numbers could hurt since Shield value was lower, and it was for no cost, just attack and its 15k. I also wonder if you'll talk about any promo units that come out during this time, cause theres some fun ones!

      @CurlyHairedVanguard  Před 10 měsíci

    Absolutely loved this vid was so awesome. Only criticism I had was that, “vanguard doesn’t have a mana system.” As Counter-blasts are VG mana system, and like Digimon is a unique mana system that is reactive to how the game progresses.
    Such an awesome video, really loved it. Also you should try reach out to Team Absolution VG, they were doing content during old VG and into G era. They would have a ton of info even on their channel or if you were able to get a hold of them.

      @CurlyHairedVanguard  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thank you! I've been trying to find these old vanguard channels so I will definitely try and reach out to them!
      To your point, I wanted to allude more to the fact that you could call anything from hand, regardless of "mana" as you would in other games. And that likewise you scale up each turn, as you would in games with mana but just not exactly. I wouldnt count CB/SB as mana persay but in general Im saving mention of that for the next video; didnt want this one to be too tutorially.

    • @riggso
      @riggso Před 10 měsíci

      @@CurlyHairedVanguard More than welcome! Hopefully you can get some stuff outta them.
      With the “mana system” I think that’s fair as it’s definitely unconventional so totally understand not wanting to call it as such. Also tbf the CB system is definitely perspective wether people see it as a “mana system” or not. Love the stuff can’t wait for the next vid, I’ll be patiently waiting. ❤️

    Another interesting thing to note about Vanguard was that it had a strong start due to a good portion of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Community giving this game a shot since everyone hated Dino Rabbit format where Ignition Priority was still a thing in the TCG. People like me heard about how the guy who made the Yu-Gi-Oh! R manga co-created a card game and enjoyed its early diversity (which I'm sure you'll get to) due to the set's not aligning with Japan's.
    In retrospect, megablast sucked and like, 9-10 G3s we're good enough for Goku since getting 1 G3 trigger a game was enough to set back an opponent at a time where card advantage generally required 2 CBs minimum. Any more than 1 and you went mega-plus, but it wasn't worth screwing your ride ratio over. 14-10-9, 13-11-9, 13-10-10, and 12-11-10 were all worth testing.
    Berserk Dragon at 4 was great for early-mid game control and if you ran the superior ride (which, if you did, you'd go 4 Aleph or none at all), you can get 3 Berserk 1 DO effect off or 1 Berserk 2 DO eff off minimum with no heal triggers in play.
    Conroe also allowed utility for not just perfect guards and getting Aermo to cycle out the excess G3s, but a tech of Jarran if you ran 2 copies of Tejas (but if you ran the superior ride, you wouldn't go this route since Tejas will compete for Nehalem's space unless you cut down on Berserk a little) for even more back row hate.
    The advantage Vortex had over Aleph however wasn't his megablast but the fact that he was attacking for 12k as a VG, which gave him an advantage against any non-DO or Kaiser VGs if backed by Bahr. That being said it wouldn't be something you picked over Goku or DO early game but it had merit behind the idea.
    Going 8 Crits 4 Stands had merit in pure Kagero due to RG DO restanding for 21k being a menace.
    DO and Karma Queen were also splashed in Invincible decks lol basically it was budget Kagero with no PGs get rekt

    Very Great Video, I wish our past was a little more well documented. Also note there was a lot more grade 3 mixing in the early competitive like Mr. Invisible in Kagero, I knew a lot of decks splashed in CEO cause they could to check that top card. Also while you have a valid critism of the flaws of barcgal it helped as Gancelot need Blaster Blade in soul for his ability and come set 2 when RP got Soul Saver Dragon paying that guareteened its soul blast 5 cost on ride

  • @Shizukatz
    @Shizukatz Před 4 měsíci

    A bit unfortunate that a lot of the records of old Vanguard are lost to time, as there are some pretty major errors regarding the decks that were played at the time.
    Not to say that I don't appreciate all the effort and research that went into the video, fantastic job on that.
    That being said, here are some major points about the set 1 era:
    The first is the grade ratios. It was established almost immediately that the optimal grade ratios for most decks was aruond 17-14-11-8. Exceptions would apply to decks such as Asura Kaiser which would often go to around 10-12 to increase the chances of hitting Grade 3s on their drive checks.
    That being said, Goku Kagero did not actually play a lot of 3s, usually just playing the 4 Gokus to be the intended VG and 4 Overlords to be the intended RG. It would also use Stand triggers to potentially stand Dragonic Overlord on RG if the opponent guarded against their attempts to wipe their frontrow RG slots.
    Aleph was never a deck.
    One of the most popular decks of the era was actually one called "Invincible Overlord", due to the combination of the two main units involved. The main VG would be Mr. Invincible from Nova, while the main RG was Dragonic Overlord. You would use Mr. Invincible's one-per-turn Counter Charge alongside Nova units like Hungry Dumpty and Claydoll Mechanic to allow Dragonic Overlord to repeatedly use his CB3 effect in a single game. The deck was also EXTREMELY cheap, due to not playing Perfect Guards, making it a very popular choice amongst prospective players who did not want to full invest yet.
    The last big point is that Highspeed Brakki was one of the best cards in almost every deck. Having access to a 14k attacker (making a 21k lane with a 7k booster) in a pinch for a big final push was valuable no matter what deck you were playing, and there weren't enough mechanics (such as updated Lord text) in the game yet to prevent players from playing off-clan units. The one deck that wouldn't run this was Alfred due to his effect requiring a full board of RPs for 20k power, but pretty much anything else could use this card.
    I played a ton of VG from the very beginning, and used to actually be a CFVG youtuber for the first few years of the game being out. If you need any consultation for these videos, feel free to hmu on my twitter @ShizukatzWS. Keep up the good work!
