I’m going to digress. My neighbor’s dogs came over to say hi yesterday when they saw me in the yard. He tried to recall them by saying their names but I told him it was ok and was happy to see the puppers and give them love. I crouched down and turned sideways to be less of a threat and they worked their way next to me and ended up leaning into me for scratches (quite skittish at first - my guess is the neighbor is too intense for the dogs and they are cautious around all people now). I refrained from making eye contact with them or looking directly at them and they responded well.
I loved them up for 5 minutes or so, then the guy started calling them back. The dogs didn’t react to his requests, in fact it was clear to me they were actively ignoring him. I stood up in an effort to send a message to the dogs they could go, but they both remained next to me, one on each side, looking at the neighbor. SoI walk towards the neighbor, I don’t want him to get mad at the dogs and manhandle them for not “obeying”. They walked with me but wouldn’t leave my side. He must of said their names 50 times.
I said as nicely as I could that I noticed the dogs seem a bit fearful of him, and when he says their names 50 times and they don’t react, he’s teaching them to ignore them and that I could help him get to a point where he could say their name once and achieve results.
He said the dogs have always been “skittish” and “dumb”. Like it’s the dogs fault. I don’t know everything about dogs, but I am certain those dogs would have followed me and naturally wanted to stay by my side from that moment on, with almost no effort on my part other than showing them kindness and speaking their language in ways they understood. A dog wants to please you more than anything.
I felt so sad for the dogs. Bunch of idiots in the dog world too.

I remember as a child on all the holidays I would see my relatives. They would sit around and play cards in the kitchen.
I remember hearing repeatedly how they would talk like they knew everything. They would even comment” I been doing it that way for yrs and I am to old to change now”.
I always told myself I would never grow up and be that way.
I am 55 now and I have spent my life making sure I don’t live their limits in my life.

That old guy reminds of a girl I met the other day while riding. So my horse in a rope halter and she comes in with hers and of course in a bit and sees me and goes like "oh I wish I could ride my horse bitless but I can't because he just wants to run to much and to fast" and I sat there like 'aaaalright' I didn't really said anything out loud.
I rembered how she was riding her horse a few years back when he was younger and got thrown a few times because he wouldn't stop and back then she already was always afraid of him. And you know I saw her leading her horse down from the pasture with a bit too, learning from Rick, this is a clue. Just felt sorry for the horse and could only shake my head about this girl. My mother likes to say 'I can't is just another way of saying I don't want to I am afraid' I think that applies very well to this situation and quite a few I have had since I started riding bitless.
Rick you are amazing and your videos are so helpful and I think you already changed the life of quite a few horses :)

When I was young we lived on a small hobby farm. I got my first horse and was ignorant of any and all things horse related. That poor gelding put up with a lot. Some of the best rides I had were when I'd jump on him bareback, tie the lead rope around his neck and go round up the cows. It was dangerous to leave them up in the hilly pasture with a lightning storm coming in. (They didn't come when they couldn't hear us calling.) We worked together and he never put a foot wrong. I was 12 years old, 80 lbs wringing wet, and I'll never forget that wonderful horse.

    Rick:
    Basics
1 - Grab your favorite relaxing drink.
2 - Sit your butt down with a pad of paper and pencil.
3 - List from 1 to XXX the things that are important to you in regards to horses.
4 - #1 on your list should be something to the effect *(THE INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK IS MY EXPERIENCE and NOT NECESSARILY FACT).
5 - WRITE ( type) Note: Keep a pad and pen with you, even when you go to bed to write down the thoughts that WILL pop into your head when your not writing.
6 - DO NOT correct yourself! Just WRITE! EDIT after your book is finished.
7 - If you have a trusted English Police friend allow them to read - edit your book.
8 - Refer back to #6, your first write is usually your best.
9 - PUBLISH with a Publisher or something like Amazon.

Great story Rick, thanks. My step father grew up in Wyoming in the 50's. Your story played out many times back then. There was a super high price horse in that area that "no one" could ride. He got sold and returned many times. Finally the owner put out the word that any one that could ride him could have him. After a month of "cowboys" showing up and giving him a try, my step father, 9 years old, showed up and requested his try. He walked the horse over to the irrigation pond and went in about stirrup deep and hopped on. The horse stood for a second and then went to buck. As you know, when a horse goes to buck his head goes down and he inhales. The horse came back up sucking for air and got himself put back together and then went to try another buck to get the rider off. Again the horse came back up sucking for air. Got himself put back together, paused for a second and started another buck and stopped short, looked back and looked forward looked back. All the time while the horse was attempting to buck my step dad off, he petted him and was quiet and calm. He calmly rode the horse out of the water and headed for home(miles away) at a walk. From a young age my step dad broke and trained horses. I suppose when you're just a little guy you had better find the "easy ways" to work with a horse. RIP JR Nix...

Before I found your CZcams channel, I was pretty much like one of those ignorant pretty in pink horse girls. Let me thank you for changing my whole view on horses. Not only have I learned how they behave around me, but most importantly, I have learned how to behave around them. I used to compete in showjumping and dressage, and I thought I did everything right and that my horse loved it, but now I understand how wrong I actually was. I’m so thankful I found your channel. Thank you so much for teaching not only me, but thousands and thousands of others, how to behave with and around horses, we need it. Keep up with all these videos, you are awesome.

Rick, you're right. Abuse of animals has been going on, in the name of knowledge and retribution, for generations. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, thinking of a little mare my mother rescued when I was a child. Oh, that was so long ago! Her previous owner blinded her with a pocket knife because he "couldn't get her to behave". My mom bought her and lead her home. Over the months, Cherry was more than rehabilitated. My mom had her vetted and trained her. Cherry was the horse I learned to ride on. It took me years to become the horsewoman my mom was. But I had great training from a wise woman and a bunch of horses who lived like horses, not barn inmates. Thanks, Mom, and Cherry, from me and the horses of my later years, Taco, Sugar Baby, Rush, and Dan. Please people, consider that the old school may not be always the best, and forcing your horses to be something other than naturally minded horses for sure isn't the best.

Thank you so much for saying you're anti- bit, spurs, whips, etc. That was how I was with my horses. I used to ride them anywhere, and I mean ANYWHERE, without any bridle, halter, saddle, whip, spurs, or anything. I rode them through water such as irrigation ditches and smaller streams/rivers, I rode across plastic, plywood laying on the ground, around dogs, etc. I did moonlight rides at night, galloped across fields, down dirt roads. Road into town, went through Burger King drive through (lol) etc. Yes, in the beginning, I was taught all the old school bullsh*t, but I loved my horses and wanted a better way. When I started changing how I trained my horses, and yes, I trained them all, by myself, starting from the ground teaching them to halter and lead, and eventually, let me ride them, but I digress... when I first started training, I used to get ridiculed for how I worked with horses. But later, when they saw me riding everywhere without bridles, halters, saddles, nothing, they were AMAZED, and I was always asked how do you do that?! They'd ask me to show them how to teach their horses the same way, and it would take me about 30 seconds or so to realize I was never going to get through to them. Sad, really.

I agree entirely. I was about 12 years old, I chose a 16hh horse to ride. The owners tried to talk me out of it, "he'd buck'' or 'he's too dangerous' . Caught him without a problem, and lead him to the RDA yard. Poor old boy had spent his life being told he was stupid for what he couldn't do, I un-learned 'no' from Winston, he had the world's most beautiful trot, and a very patient manner! He didn't know how to back out of a corner of the yard, I helped him. He taught me to talk to my horse, the reins weren't meant to be yanked on.
4 years after I met him, he was retired (he broke his back so wasn't suitable for riding. I'll miss my boy forever.

It breaks my heart and angers me, too, to hear how some horses like in the story you shared, are and were mistreated in their lifetime. (All animals for that matter.) I have a feeling God is working with you, not against you, Rick, to educate us "big dummies" on how to treat the horses He created. Keep on preachin' it, Rick! Some of us are listening! Like the boy in the story of The Starfish Thrower who was told he couldn't possibly make a difference with the miles and miles and thousands of starfish that had washed ashore. He may not have been able to save them all, but as he said as he tossed another one back into the ocean, "It made a difference for that one." Rick, you are making a difference in horses' lives. May God bless you for helping them!

It's heart breaking to think how many horses have lost their lives due to humans stupidity. I am in my early 50s and I swear I still prefer animals company more than some humans that I know. Animals never lie to you or let you down on purpose, plus they are great company when you are feeling scared or especially lonely. What do these wonderful animals look for in return is food, water and a warm cosy bed to sleep in safely each night and a human to show them love and affection, damn in my book that's a bargain of a price to pay for have a fantastic companionship in our lives. 😚

He in the breaking her arm one time. I never saw this horse not be anxious when she owned him. Finally he bucked her off and put her in the hospital. She was going to take him up to the mountains and shoot him right in the head. Young lady Star Ranch begged her not to and that she would take him off of her. The lady agreed. The very moment that young lady walked him down the road to his new stall. His head was down and he was calm. She even rode in a rope halter. So those who don't believe in rope halters and have to have bits. I saw it for myself a different horse just riding in a rope halter period and not a bit and yanking on his mouth.

I’ve seen a couple of people saying, “Horses are working animals, they’re here for our service and if they don’t do what they’re supposed to, they’re gonna receive a good whipping.”... I paraphrased what they said, but they were basically saying that. To be honest, it makes me want a horse, donkey or mule to kick a hole in their rib cage or leave them with a caved in head... Yes, it would be justice for an abused animal to strike back at or even kill its abuser. There, I said it. Equines being used as working animals does NOT give us the right to do whatever we want with them, should we just do whatever with herding, hunting or search and rescue dogs? Which are obviously also working animals?

The way Rick interacts with his horses when he was giving his boys their breakfast and giving rubbies to Buddy and T, that's how the bond with horses should be. Horses aren't scary as most people think when you watch this video. I would be doing the same thing with my horse. RIP Goofy(my late horse)1988-2012. You(Goofy) were a wonderful teacher and had a lot of patience with me and the mistakes I've made with you helped me become a better horse person. I'll be more prepared and know what to listen for next time if, I have another horse come into my life. If so, we'll be watching Rick's channel in the field/ barn wherever..lol and cracking on humans! Lmao!

Hi Rick, agree with you totally. No one can educate those old schoolers. I can't believe its 2018 and still most horses are still being abused and most riders can't ride. No bits, no whips, no spurs, no buckles, no shoes, no chains. Thanks for your common sense videos. It's never the horses fault.

You inspire me to share another crazy horse story of my own.
I've always been horse crazy as far back as I can remember. We lived in Virginia near DC when I was 1st grade through 8th.
Behind our home was a community center with a pool and tennis courts. Behind that across a ditch was a horse stable. 1977 I think. However old I was in 2nd grade, 7 or 8?
Anyway I was always over there longingly watching and petting the horses and watching groups of people rent them to ride.
One day, I decided to go ask how much it was to ride. $5 for a half hour $10 for an hour trail rides. I asked my mom if I could go ride and she told me if I wanted to do that I'd have to wait for my monthly allowance. $5.
Well, I didn't want to wait for the end of the month. Here was an opportunity to ride a horse without being led around like some noobie 😁.
I mean, I had an encyclopedia of horses and had a stable of imaginary horses of every breed. I rode them around all the time, watched all the western movies. I even watched the Lone Ranger.
So, I decided to raid my dad's change cup while my mom was busy, dad was at work, and go over there to ride.
I remember giving the lady the $5, in quarters, and her looking at another lady like "What do I do?"
Well, God must have been wanting to grant me my biggest wish that day, because these ladies broke all sorts of safety laws, I'm sure. They decided I couldn't trail ride but they would allow me to ride a horse in the round pen where they could keep an eye on me.
Oh, did I mention I had a walking cast on my right foot? I remember them asking me about it and me saying something like it was supposed to be coming off soon and didn't hurt. They told me to be careful and not kick the horse with that foot.
No helmet, no help getting up on the horse, I climbed up the horse and rode it around for probably only like 15 minutes I'm sure. I was very careful not to move my right leg. I remember after the ride just petting and talking to the horse. He was such a great horse to put up with me.
I'll be forever grateful to those ladies for allowing me that experience.
I got the whooping of my life when my mom found out.
That's probably the only time in my life I didn't care that I got a spanking.

Dam. Crazy story. Sad. No hope for people like that who are set in their ways with horses. As for myself I won't even get on a horse if the horse doesn't pass my little check list. On a new horse I'll cinch up the cinch and release it to see the reaction. I'll pick up hoves and flex them. I'll lung and back up the horse to see his behavior and if the horse fails and acts out from past riders I'll work and bond with the horse for as long as it takes. When I'm working with a horse time is no problem. Whatever problem I see, it gets fixed before I even get on. Some might call that "being a wuss" but I ride with no helmet so I do everything I have to do on the ground to make sure we're both safe

The most important thing I learned in college, and is one of the few things I remember from those days is, the definition of common sense. Which is: Knowledge learned through experience. Think about this. It's the truth. No one has 'common sense' until they learn it either through personal experience, or through stories of the experiences of others they trust. Here's the problem with that equation, many people have to fail multiple times before they learn from their mistakes and gain 'common sense'. And many people fail over and over and over and NEVER learn.
