  • Finn the barn owl has turned into an excellent first time dad to his two barn owl chicks. My latest film follows his story from those early, clumsy attempts at romance, to his increasing confidence in his role as a protector and provider for his two owl chicks.

    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Their owl story
Finn and Gylfie first hooked up together last year. Finn is just two years old - this is his first breeding season - and his inexperience has been amusing to watch. You can read more about Finn, who is an orphaned owl and was released here at Fotherdale, and his romantic courtship with Gylfie here: www.robertefuller.com/diary/a...
From clumsy courtship to devoted partner
But this male barn owl has now matured and proved he can provide for his family. He takes his job very seriously.
    And dedicated dad
It's obvious he is a first time dad, however. When Gylfie stands up to reveal their first egg in May, he cannot contain his curiosity. He checks the egg with his beak, and wonders if he should brood it himself. But Gylfie steps in and pushes him aside… incubating is best left to the expert.
Barn owls lay every 2-3 days
Over the next week Gylfie lays two more eggs. The second egg's arrival is unusual, it pops out whilst she is standing. Again Finn is fascinated and Gylfie must gently nudge him away.
    Attentive dad
Over the next few days, Finn rarely leaves Gylfie's side as she broods their eggs. The process continues to amaze Finn and when Gylfie has a rare moment away from the nest, he hops down to take a closer look.
    Hunting for the owl family
Finn works hard bringing in food around the clock and spending his days standing guard over Gylfie and the eggs.
    Threat from above
But there is unwanted attention outside the nest. Nearby, tawny owls are roosting and they’re highly territorial. Night after night, the pair endure a barrage of attacks. Thankfully, they keep the tawny owls at bay, and no harm comes to the eggs.
    The chicks hatch
After 31 days of incubation, the first egg cracks open and a tiny, cheeping chicks emerges. Again Finn is mesmerised. Barn owl eggs hatch at the same interval as they were laid so, 3 days later, a second chick is revealed and a third 3 days after that.
    One chick does not survive
Finn brings in food constantly, but competition between the chicks is fierce and one chick seems to be lagging behind. It’s a lot smaller than it’s siblings and when Gylfie tries to feed it just won’t take it. Overnight, it’s crawls away from the warmth of its siblings. And by the time Gylfie notices the lone chick it is too late.
    Remaining chicks thrive
Thankfully the two remaining chicks are growing well. Finn and Gylfie now have one less mouth to feed, so these owlets now actually have a better chance of survival.

I just looked up and barn owls often mate for life and it said this " They regularly use the same nest site every year and have elaborate courtship rituals-such as courtship flights, calls, and offerings of food-to reestablish their pair bond every spring" like this is very cute and wholesome

@@robzworkz3358 Well it isn’t uncommon for birds to mate with individuals outside their pair to increase chances of passing on genes, though not sure about owls, and they aren’t together all year, so they probably see romance a bit differently than we do.
But yeah, you’ve got to admire the simplicity of animals sometimes, and how they can occasionally show more humanity than humans themselves.

That's because their goals as a couple are focused on the well being of their offspring, not self centered individual goals at the expense of those they love. Call me old fashioned but a couple should focus on the family. There is a time and place for being yourself, even within the family, but too many of us humans decide not to support our offspring or the partners that helped create and support them. We'd rather chase our career or play that new video game instead of spend time with those we love... which is all the owls are doing. They fight to protect each other, they preen and feed and nest together. If we change our primary focus from ourselves to those we love? Spending time together and focusing on growing strong together? Instant benefits, though it takes a group effort and not just one selfless parent while the entitled one gets away with everything else.

I hate it when people mix up satience and sapience.
Basically all creatures with a brain is satient to an extent. Its about emotion, social bonds, the ability to have trauma, that stuff.
Sapience is the sence of ego, and is very rare to find. Only humans and some other animals has this.

@@maximillian1109 first of all, “satience” isn’t a word, so I don’t know if you mean sentience or not, but sentience is exactly what i mean: the quality of being able to experience feelings. sapience is generally defined as wisdom, that is not what i mean, i don’t think animals are the keepers of ancient knowledge or some crap like that, but i do think they are capable of feeling emotions like love and sorrow.
so, quit hating something you don’t even understand.

Amazingly, I still hear owls in my suburb once in a while… There’s also another kind of bird that can be extremely vocal at night that I have never heard before in my 46 years of life. It is the most peculiar call, and I am just so curious to know what is making the noise! It actually borders on a terrifying/spooky kind of sound - it’s no little song bird lol.
I have asked one person on a walk one time when they heard it if they knew, but they had no clue either. I hope one day there will be an app developed where we can record the sounds of wildlife and find out what species is making that sound. It would be really cool to learn about all the kinds of wildlife that live around us, hidden from view. :)
