I work as a lifeguard at a waterpark and we're actually not allowed to "catch" kids at the bottom of the body slides and we don't allow parents to because of safety. We can't be in the water like this lifeguard was, but every pool is different. We stand on the side on the ledge of the catch pool and jump in and get the kid if they're struggling, and the parent has to wait farther back past the lifeguard stand to ensure the lifeguard can get to the kid first. I wasn't there and I don't know exactly what was said and how it was stated, but it looks like the lifeguard was ultimately looking out for Livy's well-being by not recommending she not go down the slide. We do what we can to prevent a rescue from happening in the first place. For example, in the wave pool where I work, if I see a kid going out of their depth and it appears they can't swim and an adult is not consistently with them, I tell them to go back where they can touch the bottom. Sometimes they look at me like they're annoyed and confused and I explain that it looks like they can't swim and should stay where it's not as deep. The lifeguard probably just want what is safest for everyone. Our lifeguard shirts actually say "If you're child is in them water, you should be too."
I use to be a lifeguard at a water park and our rules were similar. Except there were a few slides we were in the water. Both slides of the same slide at the top and one at the bottom (if I was a deep guard there would have been more) and there weee times we had such few lifeguards I had to be in the one at the bottom while watching the one next to it that we had a flag signal for the ra at the top. So I had a flag, a rescue tube ans my whistle in my mouth inxase it needed to be blown. Which I would have had to do when entering the water even to get a kid out that ahould have never been allowed on the slide. Parents where I worked were horrible listeners. They kept sayinf they were going to stay in to catch theie kid. I said no you have to get out. If your kid needs someone I'll get them out (you know since I'm not going to let the kid drown) and they said no its ok. I kept telling them no you are not qllowed to stay in. What they dont realize is I have to blow the rescue whistle so both slides know to stop sending people down when I so that all od the supervisors and higher ups coming running from whwrever they are in the park. For a kid that should have never been on the slide. Something thar could be been prevented ans made me blow rhe whistle cause I has to basically catch a kid from the slide. Nor to mention the stares you get and your fellow employees around you looking worried and hoping everythings ok. But they cant do anything cause unless they were workinf rhebsame slide(s) as you they got to keep doing their job on their rides.

And when you see thousands of people gaining up on a lifegiard for doing his job just because they didnt like his response it takes a bit of longish (Which reallybisnt that long) comment to explain why hes not mean. I do find it interesting that you felt you had to comment jist to say long. But to each his own.

I'm a strong swimmer and came down a waterslide in one of those rubber rings and somehow it flipped over and I got completely caught in it and couldnt get out so lifeguard had to rescue me your jobs are incredible and the work you do thank you

So glad Livvy is ok. Our lifeguards don't help kids either unless it's an emergency. Kids have to be able to swim to the side of the pool before they can go down the slides.

as a lifeguard, if i were him i would have said "sorry, i can't catch her because it's the rule i have to follow, but i will be right here if she can't make it to the side" but he was right, it isn't safe for her to go down the slide if she isn't a strong swimmer. at the pool i lifeguard at, we don't allow kids to go off of the diving board with floaties or anything, because we are in charge of watching everybody in the pool and not just the kid going off of the diving board. they could easily slip off/out of the floaty. and it makes us so nervous if the kids aren't strong swimmers, which is bad because then we want to pay more attention to these kids and not as much to the other kids in the pool. but i'm glad livvy is ok! :)
and if you watch the video again, you can see that the lifeguard gets nervous after being told that livvy is not a strong swimmer, and gets closer to the slide in case he needed to grab her :)

Glad to see Livvy is OK. I've been there as a mommy too and been over it. You handled it like a champ. Vog is a little misleading bc I originally thought she got hurt bc the lifeguard didn't catch her. FYI: the rec centers in this area have always had 'that' rule. I've been here for 13+ years.

he didn't catch her because it would be a distraction from watching the pool. it may seem mean of him to do that to you, but as a lifeguard, i know he was just following the rules he was told to follow. by telling chelsea that livvy shouldn't be going off if she can't swim well, the lifeguard saved livvy from a possibly very dangerous situation. he was just doing his job :) but i promise you, if livvy did decide to go down the slide after all, and started drowning, he would have been there in a flash to save her

Izzy Savage. That child shouldn’t of even been near the deep end or put a life vest on her. Sorry bad mothering is the blame for this one. The life guards are there just in case of an injury or an emergency. It’s up to the parent to watch your own child especially that you let them go in the deep end knowing that they couldn’t swim that well.

usually rides that have a pool at the bottom of 3 ft or more have a list of rules at the top that include you may only go on the ride if you can swim. as a former water park lifeguard we are told by our employers we are not allowed to catch kids, esp if we have more than one area to watch and by catching a kid, it takes our eyes off watching the whole area(s) that we're supposed to be concentrating on. Unfortuntaley the lifeguard was doing what lifeguards are told to. that's why there are rules for rides. so while it may not seem nice, he was in the right. not trying to be mean, just letting people know that's how it is. we have to be scanning our area the entire time.
