    What is Spinal Osteopenia?
The term “osteopenia” refers to having a lower than average bone mineral density (BMD) when compared to others of the same age. Osteopenia itself will not produce any symptoms but as the condition worsens over time, the risk of other bone conditions, like osteoporosis dramatically increases.
The major cause and risk factor of osteopenia is aging. After a certain age, your body will break down the old bone faster than it builds the new one. This results in the loss of bone density. Osteopenia usually occurs after the age of 50, and gradually deteriorates. Women also quickly develop osteopenia after menopause, due to lower estrogen levels. Prevention of osteopenia helps to protect the bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
    Additional risk factors may include:
A family history of low Bone Density
    Vitamin deficient diet,
    smoking,
    excessive alcohol or caffeine,
    Sedentary lifestyle
Or Other medical conditions such as Celiac disease, or Cushing’s syndrome may help to develop osteopenia.
Non-pharmaceutical treatment of osteopenia involves preserving existing bone mass via adopting healthy behaviors such as a proper diet with good nutrition, exercise, avoidance of smoking or drinking alcohol. If severe enough, Your doctor may suggest a Pharmaceutical treatment for osteopenia. Please follow your doctor’s advice to maintain a healthy lifestyle during any age of your life.
