Thank you so much for this! I cleaned both Vanos Solenoids in my 2003 325xi and the car has never ran so good since I owned it! No more random stalling going into drive or reverse. Also no more random stalling getting off the highway!
Only video I found that shows the exhaust side and more importantly the oil control valve! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much just had this issue after doing my timing chain and had the issue. Cleaned it fixed it so far! Thanks
Thank you and the tips with the wrenches man great stuff
Thanks for the great DIY brother
Thanks brother, I will attempt this tomorrow.
Bro got ableton and e46, subscribed
lol you know it, Thank you!
Really nice video!
You Da Man! Thanks!
I tried a few different times to unscrew these solenoids and they wouldn’t break free. Tried on a warm engine and also used a heat gun, finally broke loose.
02 330i cab..The only thing i removed was the electric fan and of cause the intake tube. Right now iam soaking the not sounding solenoids. The valves inside was not dirty at all, and i wonder how long time it will take for the solenoids to fill up with oil again? I took a bahco wrench
(The one that is 32 mm when maxed out) and with a karate hit made it shorter not to reach for the radiator. One hit with a hammer and they came loose. We have a company selling o rings and alot of rubber things. They always recomend vaseline for orings before use. It keeps them young and fresh for a long time. I too some o rings from my gardena coupplings and had dem in the vaseline jar for some weaks (i forgot aboute them) so when i was going to wash my convertibe befor storing it during winter i needed the orings. They had grown up to be real men, so i could not press the coupplings toghether. I had to rush and buy new ones. So dont do any owerkill with the vaseline like i did.
Had some coffe, and now i will put things in place again and take a test drive. the result comes later.
Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤
Please tell me the resistance of Bad VANOS Solenoid?
How many Ohms have Good and Bad Selenoide?
Hey how many centimeters is the extension tool ?
I know the video is a Year old, but coming across it since i am dealing with the same issue, but from what i have read, the issue most likely was a Stuck Actuator. So when you removed it and cleaned, you inadvertantly most likely fixed 90% of the problem. Cleaning the solenoid itself so you could hear it rattle definately helped, but cleaning the actuator and reinserting was the Actual Cure.
Good comment, in mine replacing the solenoid was the ultimate fix, just doing the cleanings did not get rid of my check engine light. But I wanted to show cleaning the solenoid and actuator so everybody can see what is going on in there and for some cars that may be all thats needed.
Any idea on part number?
Hello dude, do you have the part number ? I manage to find one really similar but it’s for an x5
I'm definitely doing this thank you! I also have a noise coming from the top front of the valve cover at around 2000 RPM. You think that has to do with Vanos also?
Could be timing chain
I have this exact car, and replaced the CCV system bc of it smoking, and when I put it back together it only clicked one but didnt turn on, and I looked up on google what the problem may be and it gave me the solenoid and the starter, but idk if it’s accurate
The starter does have its own solenoid, unrelated to the one in this video. If the car started fine prior to the intake/ccv work then I would make sure all of those little electrical connectors in the intake area are properly plugged back in, and verify your battery has the proper voltage to start the car.
bro does the intake sensor cause the e46 to go into limp mode cos mine a 330i it changes gear smoothly n all after skipping timing as it was fixed it shows the little limp mode next to P and it started a hard start issue
Do you know what caused the limp mode or Do you have any malfunctions that are coming up
Thanks. I will give it a try. Some commented that the socket does not fit. Is this a problem or true?
the socket does not completely cover it, but it fits over it enough to do the job.
Any idea on part number please and thank you and what exactly is the name of part? Thanks
Bmw e60 2004 2.5 petrol. I keep having cylinder 5 misfire, injectors are clean, sparks and coils changed, also manifold gasket and MAF sensor, you think it can be from the solenoid?
Seems very unlikely the solenoid would cause an individual cylinder misfire. I would check the wiring for the injector and ignition coil, then if that checks out, I would do a compression test to verify head gasket / cylinder health.
Check disa valve!
So I’m back with a different question , that thing that you cleaned I heard is important and can cause issues if it’s not working correctly, what did you clean it with brake cleaner ?
Yep, brake cleaner and the tooth brush
What kindf of camera 🤳 u got good quality
Hey thank you! Mostly my 6 year old Sony A6300, then some of the tighter shots are a galaxy S9.
What was the symptoms? Knocking and/or poor idling/performance?
@@borinpich7420 yep high idle/poor fuel economy. Could potentially cause knocking as well since the engine is no longer able to make auto timing adjustments properly.
Do you know about the code p1145 on a 2000 328i??
I do not, I would look on the E46Fanatics forum for help.
Hi, I want to make the change in my 2006 BMW X3 E83. My car have two Solenoids, one at the top and one at the bottom. Is it the same piece or are they different? Because I search on the internet and I don't get the answer.
The intake "top" and exhaust "bottom" solenoids are the same part. On your car though make sure you have the right part for your car because BMW changed the style of solenoid around that year.
Are these both exactly the same if I was to order 2 to replace both
Yes they are the same part
So both of these solenoids are the same part ? I can buy 2 of the same solenoids for this
They are the same, the junkyard one I pulled was up top, and I placed it on my lower vanos.
Hi, quick question. I have a code p1145 when i searched it shows me that part (vanos) my engine bogs down when i press gas pedal and as soon as it hits 2000rpm. It his back down. It wouldn’t go pass 2000. You think its the vanos? 😮 You can clean them?
I do not believe that code has to do with the vanos. But rather a fuel delivery issue, I would look on the forums for more help. It also might be a specific part/problem to California emissions cars.
I see, thank you for the reply. Btw the p1145 saying its valve solenoid. I red some thread in the forum. Some saying vanos saome saying its fuel solenoid
Hi, ok soni took off the vanos solenoid and cleaned it the way you did your proccedure. I shook the solenoid. And i hear it moving around in there. Is that normal?
So it shows the check engine light because of the vanos?
Yes, Vanos is one of the many things that can trigger the light.
Not always
I replace the solenoid but I'm still get the same error code
I would recomend making a post on E46fanatics and include lots of detail like specific codes and symptoms.
Can we see result on video after that solenoid been clean
Can these thing cause misfire with fuel cut off?
The most common cause of misfire w/fuel cutoff will be the ignition coils, that happened to me a few times before I replaced them. I wouldn't think the vanos would cause an individual cylinder misfire since it controls timing across all 6 cylinders, but if you are getting multiple cylinder misfires I suppose its possible.
@Chris's Toolbox I've changed the coils, sparks, I even moved the coils around and the coils seen to work. It's like the cylinders aren't firing. I even baught a new wire harness for the coils. All the coils literally work but the cylinders themselves don't lol. It's so weird. Fuel Injectors new, Exhaust camshaft sensor and 2 upstream oxygen sensors have been replaced I did alot of work that could point to the issue... only thing I haven't been able to change is the Intake camshaft sensor due to the vanos bolt being stripped.
@@LilHonda97 check engine light codes would be helpful clues. Without any of those to go off the next steps imo would be to check fuel pressure, then possibly the cps intake sensor and or crankshaft position sensor, along with verifying vanos & timing. If your not on the E46 fanatics forum I would highly recommend making a post on there.
@Chris's Toolbox p1341,p1345 and p1351 all misfire with fuel cut off. Only camshaft I have to replace is the one under the vanos. But it's so stripped not even a vice grip works. And I've posted there nobody is a help. I replaced this.

17-crankshaft sensor
@@LilHonda97 wow thats quite the list, you might want to take it to a shop for diagnoses before you keep throwing more money at parts, a smoke test for vacuum leaks, and even an engine compression test might be worth doing.
Hey man did my vanos today n I couldn’t get the exhaust side I got the 32 mm but it doesn’t sit right due to the connection
@@okayyoshie2155 where did you get your socket from, Is it the same one as the video?
@@Chris.activity yea bro
32mm from autozone
@@Chris.activity need your help solving this problem
The black OEMtools socket? I'm not sure why it wouldn't work unless your socket is slightly shorter. I would suggest measuring out your socket and comparing it to the one at 2:06 mark of the video then assess from there.
Benim e46 aracım motor sıcakken gazı kesip kesip bırakıyor arıza bundan olabilir mi
Bro are u in WA?
No but close, The thumbnail pic is of Mt Shasta
What was your symptoms
P0014 cel and slight power loss.
That socket does not fit all of the way lol
Yeah mine didn’t fit either
