How To Turn Plastic Bags Into Durable Totes | World Wide Waste
I've had bags like these for at least 7 years now. A crafty woman from the countryside figured out the same thing as he did, wove them and sold them at festivals. The big bag (the size of his) was 25$ I think. :P
"Those big corporations man, ya they're always polluting the earth and ripping us off"
"That'll be $100 for something that cost me $5 to make."
I honestly don't get how you can call something a luxury item and charge whatever for it. The only thing that's luxurious is the price.
People have done this at state fairs for decades and they still make atleast double.
@@djprogramer973 Yes, but I would venture that the reality is more complex. This type of weaving is time consuming. Typically, women's work is undervalued, so if a woman sells her bags for what they're worth just at minimum wage, they'll be upwards of $50. But nobody at fairs and festivals will pay that price for a plastic bag made of plastic bags made by a woman who does that as a hobby. (and women know that, so they price their stuff at a price that feels decent, not a price that reflects reality).
This guy here has premises to pay for, employees too. To pay for everything and make a little profit, unfortunately, the price tag has to be a bit high. But it's too high for "normal folks" and too low for "high end folks" so he chose to up the price and gratuitously claim it's a luxury item.
For my part, I'd keep to state fairs and let ppl with too much money bite the bait.
@@cloverhighfive true
Yup, some housewives on the country side do this with straws, plastics and old clothes they sell them locally
@@djprogramer973 Honestly, it's the manufacturing. They aren't using assembly line machines. It's near enough all done by hand. So the price reflects the actual labor cost. But I do agree, for his product to be viable to all but the most snobbiest. He needs to drive the labor cost WAY WAY down. Then he can market it to the masses.
The idea is nice, and I like that they're not outsourcing the work, but 130$ for a recycled plastic shopping tote is unfortunately inaccessible to regular working Joes. I wish them the best of luck.
No one besides hipsters and ultra liberals with deep pockets are going to spend that kind of money on totes. Especially when EVERY grocery store on the planet offers cheaper alternatives. Usually for less then $5. Food Lion, Walmart, Kroger, Publix, etc. They all have their own totes for like $2 to $5. Hell, paper bags are a much cheaper alternative. By a HUGE margin. So, while I appreciate his enthusiasm, he has to get that price tag down to say $20. I know that's still a steep price tag, but considering he's not a major corporation with billions in the bank, I highly doubt he could get his manufacturing costs down enough to compete with said major companies. So offering them at a "reduced premium" would be a better start. As consumers have proven, they'll gladly choose "green alternatives" at a small premium because they get all warm and fuzzy inside. But $130? That warm and fuzzy feeling doesn't even factor into the economic equation.
Or, if he truly believes in the CAUSE sell the product at a loss. But again, that's asking for quite a lot from a "small business." And in my personal opinion, especially in NYC is NOT a viable business model. Even with other products his company makes, making up for the loss.
As I said, I appreciate the enthusiasm. But let's be real honest, his customer base is like 1% of the actual market he's catering to. (Every human on the planet that goes grocery shopping.) And no cause in the world, is going to be practical at that price point. You absolutely HAVE to make it a viable alternative for very little extra money out of pocket, for people to subscribe to it end masse. As we all love causes, until they drain our wallets. Then we'll gladly continue choosing the polluting mainstream product.
Their look doesn't fit with the price in my opinion. At supermarkets, bags that look like this can be bought at the counter if you want to buy a lasting bag. And that's for just few dollars.
I agree! Eco-friendly products tend to be quite expensive.
0llllllmmm
And here we have the same people most likely to complain about being replaced by machines demanding a price point that can only be achieved by replacing them with machines....
My great aunt has been doing that in Brazil since the 1970’s. She would cut plastic into strips and make threads then crochet bags. There wasn’t a lot of money in the household. It was a way to reuse, keep her busy, and make her daughters some bags. She probably would make other things for the house too. The totes are pretty common here, you can find those for about US$5 anywhere around here.
Right people to think this is something new but it's not,I've been crocheting 7 years and started 5 years ago making bags and placemats.
Yeah, they're ripping people off
Yes they’re pricey, but they are paying employees a working wage hence the price. 😁
@@penny4849 of course
Exactly.... He is just fooling people
Just add a Gucci symbol and people will even buy it for 100 times the price
Yeah, why not?
but the price is still to high evebthough u pun gucci sign on it.
All he gotta do is ask Gucci for some wrappers 😂
Lol, in india bags like these go for 5 to 10 USD. There are also denim bags (made of old jeans and denim wears) which cost 8 to 20 USD.
Its already the price of Gucci,😁
The problem is NOT that people need to use less bags. Companies need to stop manufacturing them. But you'll never get them to agree so you blame the public for using what they're given 👎
What's the difference?
The first 'R' is reduce, but everyone forget that
In Austria it is common since many decades to bring your own bag to the grocery store. The plastic bags were pricy and there was raised an awareness for the problem. Since a couple of years plastic bags were banned, so now you can just buy paper bags if you forgot your own bag.
Very true. Though, Alternative materials come with their own issues so its difficult to say what is the “best” choice for our environment.
This has been a thing in the Philippines for decades now. Glad the west is catching up 😂
that's why it looked so familiar!! Hahahahaha get these for like $3
hahahaha I know right...
Its pretty common world wide. I guess the US found that out now haha
Do they have a specific name in Philippines? Or in general
@@alexflores4458 its just a bag.
In india we use them as door mats. 😂😂😂
Doormat is the last use, there's a thousands of uses before😂😂
🤣
And we can get them in less than 2 dollars.
You need to stop using those bags
but they are made up of cotton not plastic bags.
“$133 price point may sound steep, but Alex markets it as a luxury item”
Ohh, then in that case, take my money! 😂
What an absolute genius, I legit thought it was gonna be a Chanel bag, but nope... Lol literally just his own brand 🤣
@@deerfeet9524 at first I thought it was just a crappy bag made out of other crappy bags, but now that I know it’s a “luxury item” $133 doesn’t sound so bad 😉
lmfao🤣
Lol, in india bags like these go for 5 to 10 USD. There are also denim bags (made of old jeans and denim wears) which cost 8 to 20 USD.
@@ArjunSharma-gy1eq yeah but see, those aren’t “luxury items” marketed to western socialist who think they’re saving the planet by spending $150 on a plastic bag.
Great idea, but esthetic appeal needs improvement. Perhaps, instead of fabric tape they ought to try rough stitching to connect the pieces. I like the colors and the texture, but that fabric tape makes the bag look cheap for that price
Rough stitching alone would never work, the seams will blow out without the reinforcement of the tape
@@IunaIia The tape could be used inside, out of site. The handles also, could be done as braided plastic, marine knots ets.
Also, small wheels like they do it at Hulken for much less money
@@elibrod9981 having seams inside would work for something nonwoven, but this upcycled fabric is quite thick and would no longer lay flat with that design
@@IunaIia I wish I had the bag in front of me. Would have been easier to find a solution.
You know, I think it would be cool if they made a backpack. Such a cool company
remember! REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. Reduse use first, then reuse (like the video), then finally recycle if no option remains.
dont forget the fact that it is not worth it to recycle some types of plastics
Reduce, Reuse, Ecyce
The fabric they are creating with the plastic bags looks incredibly interesting. I would love to see them improve the design of the bag. They could turn it into a very desirable product!
Agenda is saving planet not design
Exactly.
@@shraddhajoshi1958 Well not everyone give a crap about “saving the planet”, but most people are vain and love beauty….so you do one by the apealing to the other…get it?
@@EtreTocsin I generally focus on reuse reduce and recycle. And we will focus on these three agenda we can save mother Earth
The plastic is still waste, these bags are just delaying the inevitable. Curbing consumption and holding industry accountable in a real way is the answer, not reuse and pretend feel good recycling programs.
I have better idea. It has multiple steps.
1. Ban usage and production of plastic bags.
2. Send all existing plastic bags and other plastic stuff that we don't need to venus. That planet is burning hot and atmosphere consists of toxic gases. And launching few more rockets wouldn't do a lot of harm considering that we launch them A LOT.
3. Use fabric bags. They are durable and can serve for a long time. They are pretty popular where I live and my fabric bag serves me for 2 years already.
@@artursgabrusevs5153 How do you LUNCH a rocket?
@@chinosantiago3252
Thousand apologies. My mistake.
@Lo V ban plastic all together, u ever think of that?
Tax plastic. Heavily. We overuse plastic cuz it's cheap. It should be expensive, not banned.
This is amazing! If Nike and many other companies are using recycled materials to make sneakers… why not make bags out of them. 🌎🌍🌏
This move will snatch investers shine in those companies.
Nike and Adidas slowly are in the sustainability via recycled plastics. In particular clothing and sports jersey's.
They are already into this reach recycling from ocean plastics
Nike does have shoes made from recycled plastic and they're FIRE
Help reducing waste by making rich people paying for garbage? Very nice
Rich people not buying a $133 dollar bag.. 😂😂😂 that’s cheap
@@kam5755 dont know what bags you are buying but $133 for a bag is pretty expensive in my eyes
@@muneebqureshi7747 I usually spoil my gf or my mom with designer bags. totes are becoming extremely popular as well. Designer brands usually I’m blessed enough where I can afford them tho without breaking the bank. To each is own tho
@@kam5755 I'm not buying no damn $133 bag
@@Arz2003 that’s good for you I guess
Well, this beats the $500 soda top bags. Still a little overpriced but if they pay the employees a decent wage I am okay with it.
I think he brings out a good point about up cycling instead of going fully on cotton based material. Just imagine how much more cotton production is needed if the world switched to it overnight. The upcycling should also apply to number of other materials including old clothing used for household cleaning. I also think that the price is high for these bags at the same time.
in the Philippines, you can also use plastic for stuffing in pillows. you can cut them into tiny pieces. It is soft but a bit noisy since you can hear the plastic
Love how his Dad still thinks he's a joke haha
TF!? I hope the 130$ price went into the employees.
Also, look up plastic recycle crafts. They've been making much better designed bags, sandals, caps, etc. And they sold for much cheaper price.
Still don't get who his target market is. Who would buy 133$ totebag made out of recycled plastic bag with standard design?
I feel like I seen these before, still very cool! However when it said “designer” I was expecting something more fashionable then a tote.
"They probably charging $10-$20 per tote" in my head while watching..
... "$144" ... *click*
Bye Felicia!
He will really be proud of his son. This show what a great father he is. And the son what a great idea we need more of him in this earth
Legit thought this was a giant sushi at first glance. I need to sleep 😂
My father did this work on the 30s in Los Angeles he ran his factory with his brothers..he loved his work
I love Hemp bags...like all plants they absorb C02 as they grow.
Australia has had film plastic bags banned for 5 years now. Ppl buy sturdy fabric bags for a dollar and they last a couple of years. Film plastic bags are used to wrap moist food. We can buy thicker plastic bags at checkouts for 15c. They last a fair while. It's very common to wash your fabric bags and buy some in designer patterns and colors.
You can get fancy fabric bags with internal pockets for $50...very strong. Those bags made by the NY company would be too pricey for us. But as floor rugs...hmmm!
This kinda bags is used in india for grocery shopping and sold by local shop , from many years I guess .
But m happy you guys also find this 👍
And also that is traditional weaving handloom 🇮🇳🇮🇳
Mainly used for weaving of textiles like saree
And that design is inspired from "DAARIS" which is a carpet made from old used clothes in every alternative small streets in my country .
That’s so cool we need more companies like this to up cycle what we already have
They should be able to dye the finished bags (all black, a deep blue, some darker type of color so the design over the top stands out) and then do a dramatic logo/limited edition designs of their own on them. Maybe a subtle marketing campaign that has people looking for them (everything's handmade, therefore, a short wait list should also be in order), build up some brand recognition, and really work the appeal to exclusivity angle, and *then* maybe they've got themselves a luxury product. The lining is awesome btw, I'd tie that into the color scheme of each design/logo.
Oh, $144 wasn't enough for you, eh?
@@kontro113dkhaoz2 These particular bags are not essential, so if you find them not affordable for you, you're more than free to choose another bag at a cash register that you might feel more comfortable with purchasing.

Good for the son to push past Dads "old school" thinking and achieve what Dad thought was impossible...
Unfortunately here in Washington the bags were banned but Safeway and Super One are still providing them by printing on them "reusable ", when they are the same crap
And producing a $133 recycled bag will surely help the environment a lot...
Yeap my first thought as well.
I am happy that Kenya cares about the Environment! Love my country ❤️
"Would you pay $133 for a tote made of garbage"
The answer is NO!
This is such an innovative way to give trash a new life!
You phrased this wrong let me correct you. "This is such an innovative way to sell a literal trash to people".
Designer and $133 don’t go together
What do you mean by that? Too cheap?
Technically anyone could label themselves as a designer lol
I've said this once and I will say it again. The reason plastic is such a problem now is because of how cheap it is.
Therefore you cannot expect to make a long lasting impact by hiking the price of recycled plastic by claiming it's "luxury" or "handmade".
Everyday people will not buy it because it's not affordable.
We need more companies like this
At the end we pay for the brand... Not the product
You pay for the labor
Both of you are wrong. You pay for the trash.
You mean the suckers dumb enough to buy these bags.
@@perplexingperceptions8888
Exactly
Everyone commenting about the price and how in developing countries is cheaper is definitely not taking into consideration the handwork cost, these people seem to have a good work environment and a respectful salary, super different for how they are made in other countries
I like how he guessed it could carry 50-75 lb without stress testing
I’ve been doing this with crocheting for years.
Hope they succeed and this catches on
I love it…wish they would get creative with designs as well…
One man's trash is another man's treasure
My solid waste management professor told this quotation in class😍
It's literally in this case.
I do this too. Except I crochet mine. And make all sorts of things and sale them from my homeschool farm business.
South Australia has had a ban on single use plastic bags for years. People just find other ways to liitter.
Swear they used to sell something similar to this in the hood, southside Chicago mid 90s. My grandma would use these bags...she got them from a Chinese owned beauty salon for a dollar or two.
While it's good to recycle, it just don't justify the expensive price for that boring design
Here in the UK they now charge you money for plastic bags have done for a couple of years and tbh I don't think it's done much except make the government more money. Very recently the Co-op have introduced biodegradable bags which is a step in the right direction I guess
THIS IS CALLED A PERFECT RESTORATION
Lol, in india bags like these go for 5 to 10 USD. There are also denim bags (made of old jeans and denim wears) which cost 8 to 20 USD.
I have to look at the energy cost of this reclamation and net product produced and really wonder how this could be called green. Just looking at the transform value set by the selling price, there's 100+ dollars of energy (including the human capital) spent making this. I view all of that as energy in. That's a huge transform cost 1000x of other choices. I also wonder how this operation and this product contributes or doesn't to the micro-plastic contamination problem.
Iant paying nobody $133 for trash 😂
Brilliant.. very inspiring
thanks for making the change
Excellent idea, keep it going!!!!
My Peruvian aunt came to the US to visit and she was like “why do you use plastic bags?” Apparently most of Peru people bring their own reusable bags. They also went so far as to label their food healthy or no healthy. So people will make a more conscious decision.
I would buy one so I can support his business and get a wonderful product! ❤️❤️❤️
This is awesome! My family is huge on recycling. My daughters would love this bag! 👍
Get her better looking ones with standard prices. No more than 15$.
They've made this since decades now and the designs you can choose in the market are loads. Qualities are pretty much the same. Don't fall for this scam. 133$ is very overpriced.
$133 LMAO!! I feel like lowering the price might help it sell more by volume.
I appreciate this so much! Thank you 😊
He is beaming after reinventing the wheel. It is a well known technique in India and these bags would cost just $10. the price he is quoting is just insane

Turning junk into an overpriced item, okay now.
If we repurposed more, there would be a lot less garbage. Although I use plastic grocery bags as trash bags, I might start making plarn to crochet for something practical. Are there even inexpensive biodegradable trash bags in America? The ones I see are expensive.
This is so clever!! I totally get the price too. I would love to see them make rugs and other things with this material.
These are not designer bags they are cheaper versions of it in India

In Aus we have to buy our bags at stores, any and all bags, reducing waste and the plastic bags in major food stores are made from recycled plastics.
It has been a great system and I endorse it fully.
I have even started to say when I am handed a bag with the stores that are exempt from the laws, I don't need from a store I say keep it for someone else, I brought my own.

instead of solving the plastic problem which it claims , this solution will further exacerbate it. it will lead to substantial increase in the amount of microplastics in emvironment, which indeed is more harmful
He uses heavier bags that come from factories? What kind of bags are those and what are they used for?
Seems that the plastic should be melted down at minimum melting point to minimize gases, and rolled into thick plastic sheets that can then be made into totes and other products. It would be faster, cheaper, and would possibly be able to process more products, like placemats, school notebook covers and others. Not exactly artisan, but....
Our ancestor used to make mats and chairs and what not with plactics long time ago with hands its hilarious theyre charging so much lol
$133 is not really that crazy for something this labor intensive. I’m honestly surprised they’re not more expensive.
its a gamble. He told his dad dont under estimate the stupidity and desperation of people with no personality.
@Louis Vanguard my thought's exactly. A lot of companies recycle plastic and turn it into clothes (and other things) that don't cost as much and are actually pretty
In ancient times Baltic people sold amber (for Balts it was useless rock) to Romans for metals. And romans payed a lot for a single piece of amber. Nowadays people sell trash to other people and charge them $133. Not much has changed.
@Louis Vanguard considering a normal bag and one not even necessarily a fashion house name that required this much labor and hours of work would usually be at least $200. Luxury brands your looking at a couple grand. People forget even picture brands can source materials affordably. The cost largely is in the process, and working with a plastic textile is not easy. Though I do also recognize that for a lot of people especially in developing countries, $133 could be someone’s entire monthly income. So I guess it’s all subjective
@Louis Vanguard
If to consider that amber is least valuable jewelry and romans paid 100 swords for a single pebble of amber. And considering that Balts themselves considered that amber is just an orange rock and valued a bronze necklace for 100 pebbles of amber then yes. I'm comparing amber to trash though it's more of a rock.
I've been making bed mats from plastic bags, for homless
Dude, all my local supermarkets make their shopping bags from recycled plastic and it costs 75 cents. No I won't pay 100 dollars for a bag made of garbage.
Great video of day 👌👍👏
Plastic starts disintegrate eventually in heat etc so I wonder if the way they tightly weave it stops this
Yes we need the entire world to ban articles and come up with an actual way to get rid of plastics without it harming our environment. Funding and science need to be put into that, but in the meantime we can't knock people who come up with innovative ways of reusing this horrible material. In this case I think they just need to reimagine the design of the bag. That tote won't sell well for $133, but another deign might, such as maybe a backpack, a laptop bag, a surf or boogie board bag, an instrument carrier. The options are endless because its basically for ANYTHING that requires a carrier/bag/container. It could also be made into hard plastics. They just need to think broader. Best of luck to them.
A very worthy idea dear good JOB
It’s actually kinda beautiful tbh
The idea is SUPERB but that price point is WAY OFF. $133 For garbage bag??
