I feel like there should be some sort of standardization for lunchboxes, bottles, etc. Because when I go with my half liter reusable bottle I can't pay for a small coffee for instance.. And I don't need that much coffee.. So it would be nice if I could have a smaller one (in a specific recognized size) that all cafés and cafeterias would recognize.

Note that this might look cool, but this also means that the delivery driver have to drive twice to your place; that extra fossil fuel burnt might as well just offset a large part of using reusable plates and bowls.
For this to make sense, the pick up should probably be from another company that picks from multiple houses in bulk, washes them, and then redistribute the clean plates and bowls back to restaurants; but leaving these plates and bowls longer at customer's place also increases the risks of contamination, it also means that most restaurants in the area would actually have to agree to use one common plates/bowls pick up service. Food delivery waste is a difficult balancing act between waste, hygiene, and convenience.

I work at a shoe store and about two weeks ago we ran out of bags. We’ve ordered more but they haven’t come in yet. Surprisingly, almost no one has complained. If someone is buying like 3 or more pairs of shoes at one time, I offer a trash bag. I like the trash bags better than our usual bags anyway because a single bag can hold 4 shoeboxes. But most of the time people are just buying 1 or 2 pairs of shoes and are perfectly happy carrying the boxes in their hands. A lot of people have even had positive reactions when I tell them we don’t have any bags at the moment. They go, “oh cool! Saving a bag!” Or “one less thing to throw away”

I work in a fruit smoothie shop and I am saddened by the amount of plastic we produce. Just recently a found out that usually when I don't ask people if they want the ice cream in a cone or a cup, they don't even expect it to come in a cup. Or when I just hand them the sandwich in the small paper box it's in, they usually just take it without asking for a bag. And I also started asking them if they really need the cap on their cup. A surprisingly large number of them realizes they, in fact, don't need the cap. Because why should it be a sure thing to get the whole set (cup, cap and straw)? Why not treat the last two things as items for special occasions (when driving etc.)? I just wish my manager wouldn't sabotage my efforts by handing bags and cups to everyone that enters...

I experience quite the opposite. In NYC they still hand you the plastic bags without asking in grocery stores and I need to repeat 3 times and almost yell at the cashier NO BAG PLEASE!!! One time a person said back to me "But it's free...". Omg, really? Also, Seamless checkbox almost never works. I check it and then duplicate in the delivery instructions but they still end up putting napkins and utensils... The struggle is real

My family owns an Italian restaurant and we offer takeout. Here are some of the things we do:
    - We only put plastic silverware and napkins if the person order requests them. (95% of people do not) And we don't even offer plastic bottles with our takeouts.
    - Yes, we do use plastic bags for our smaller orders. For larger orders, or orders with liquids (soup, side sauce), we put them in a cardboard box that we got kitchen supplies in order a paper bag. We can also manage to put things in a paper bag or cardboard box if someone requests.
    - We put bread in ALL our to-gos. Although we do package them in a plastic bag, we tie them with the ties that we get from produce like asparagus.
    - One of the things we don't do is just hand someone a single container when they order one meal. This is because of 1. The food is usually very hot and 2. All our meals come with bread and most come with a salad with a choice of dressing. (If they don't, it usually comes with a little container of grated cheese.) So it's NEVER really _one_ container.
    - 90% dinners are packaged in an aluminum container with the cover being one side aluminum and the other side a thick paper. The only time we use a plastic top is when we have a salad for 3 people or a medium antipasto. That's it.
    - None of our to-gos contain any styrofoam. (I don't think they ever have...)
    - We try not to over-package. The only time is when we have a paper bag that is poor quality, and we just "double bag" it, which is putting the paper bag in the plastic bag.
    - To separate each container in our takeout orders, we use cardboard from the boxes we get our supplies in.

Here in the UK we switched to pay for plastic bags (5p~) for large businesses (supermarkets & large stores). Critics were saying this will destroy the local business economies and be terrible for hygeine, plus people will keep buying bags.
But small businesses don't have to impose this, neither do meats/other hygeine essential shops. Our plastic bag consumption has dropped by like 80%!

It’s frustrating how automatically a store employee will put your item into plastic bag. When I bring my reusable bags, I have to remind them multiple times that I brought my own bag. In some cases, they’ll stick my items into a plastic bag and then into my reusable one. IMO, reducing overpacking and waste begins with training away employees’ instinct to immediately bag items.

My high school instituted the first composting system in my school system as a pilot program last year, and have since been expanding it across the district to other high schools. It was really tricky at first, but our environmental club has helped a lot. Recently the district switched to paper and/or cardboard trays, and don't package most meals. We installed a water bottle filling station in the cafeteria, and many of our students carry reusable water bottles out of sheer convenience. Though it isn't a perfect system, there's still far more plastic packaging than we as a school ever need, and the composting system is still young, it's shown a remarkable improvement. I'm really proud of my school and their club, which was the one that brought it to the district as a potential to save money.

It's also helped me reconsider some of my purchases, choosing items that are not individually wrapped or to reconsider sitting down at restaurants and cafes to eat my food. A lot of places have washable cutlery, plates, and glasses for people who want to stick around.

*Laughs in Norwegian and our bottle 'pant' system and obligatory trash sorting.*
A lot of places here (including starbucks) also give discounts for people bringing their own reusable container/cup
'Pant' is a sytem where you pay 1-3kr (NOK) ($0,1-0,3 USD) extra for any and all bottles and cans you buy like sodas and water, and you collect those bottles at home before bringing them back to the store to put them through a machine to pant them which gives you back the 1-3kr extra that you spent. Meaning if you collect a big bag of it you could be sitting with over 100kr (~$12 usd) extra for your shopping.
When you pant you also get the option to not get your money back and rather donate it to health organisations.
If you do choose to throw your bottle in the trash (or put on top of it if you're nice) because those 2kr isn't worth carrying your bottle around, there are constantly homeless or poor people picking through the trash to collect the bottles thrown away for extra money.
Aroundd 90% of all bottles and cans in Norway get recycled because of this system.
It's honestly such a good system and I don't understand why it's not more used in other countries.

Changing the food container design also helps reducing waste. In Germany many supermarkets are selling takeaway food not in foam containers, but in boxes which are actually thin plastic bags fixed into a paper carton base, glued only on 8 corner points. When you finish eating you can see at the bottom of the empty container the instruction to recycle the packaging: Rip the plastic off paper box and throw them away separately. Paper is much easier to recycle than plastic so this design minimizing plastic proportion really helps.
BTW in many roadside takeaway fast-food restaurants in Germany, food like wraps or sandwitches are just packed in paper or aluminium and handed over with a piece of napkin outside, no plastic bag given. Supermarkets also generally stopped offering plastic purchase bags, but paper bags for single use or durable farbic ones.

But I also have to say the US seems to bee the craziest example for producing waste. Here in Germany, the plastic bags cost 10-20 cents, and you will be asked if you need one. So people will bring their own bags or back packs with them.
There are still a lot of other areas where waste can be prevented. I hope more countries will see the oppurtunities and switch to more reuse.

Sadly It's not that simple regarding glass bottles. With the extra shrinkage (for obvious reasons), plus the extra weight during transportation, means that glass bottled soft drinks can actually emit more CO2 than plastic. You can just put a deposit on the plastic bottles, of course.

All the shopkeepers and major malls in country started handing out paper bags or cloth bags(customers are charged for that too). So people basically bought their own bags to shopping or eateries. Biodegradable material is mostly used and plastic consumption reduced a lot. Feels good man!
