- The Hi-Lift jack is one of the most valuable tools you can purchase to provide options should you ever get stuck or damage your vehicle to the point it's not driveable. It of course can be used to jack a vehicle up for the common purpose of changing a tire, but it has many other uses that can help your vehicle regain mobility in a pinch. It can be used as a hand winch, a clamp or vise for repair work, or a spreader to pull two pieces apart. We'll cover some of these uses more specifically in other videos. In this video, we simply explain the mechanics of it, a few safety points, and give you a visual of the various uses mentioned.

I love these jacks for more than changing tires and off-roading. They are called farm jacks as well because you can use them for so many different jobs. My dad and his brother changed a wrecked 69-72 Pontiac grand prix body with a good body on my uncle's car using 4 of these to lift the body up to put them on 55-gallon drums and roll the frame away
a good to thing to know about these jacks is that when they wear the holes in the main bar, you can flip and rotate the bar twice to get new wear surfaces. I have repaired these things many times at my work. good video brother.

I've worked a lot in the desert using these jacks. You must have the wide base for these. I've always made my own wide bases from 2x4s cut and BOLTED together. What this video left out is if that jack slips under load it can fly 50 feet through the air and kill someone. I have seen them slip many times and fly FIFTY feet through the air. I know of one occasion one slipped and broke a fellow Ranger's leg out in the bush. In talcum powder fine dust, sand, or wet talcum powder dust which becomes vasoline or other muds or on uneven ground you must have the wide base for these. They do slip! Great jacks if you know how to use them. Great video guys!

Outstanding presentation, gentlemen. Almost everything one needs to know about the Hi Lift and how to safely operate it. You even covered preemptive maintenance of the jack after it has been stowed in the elements and how to get it running (lube). Too, very few others will tell you about the shear bolt. Only thing I might add to your comprehensive list of every accessory available for the jack is the Hi Lift Jack Repair Kit, consisting of 2 climbing pins, 2 climbing pin springs, 2 cross pins, 1 shear bolt and nut and 1 tube of jack lubricant. Great vid, I never go anywhere off road without my Hi lift. Bought one for my daughter for her Jeep the entire kit.Showed her how to use it and the accessories.We watch your vids all the time.

Karl, great video as always. Also might want to do a video about the usage of traction boards. These can get you out of many situations of being stuck and are also not crazy expensive depending on what brand you buy. Keep up the awesome videos!!

Go with the Magnum version. I've used these for all sorts of tasks and there is even a sapling puller adaptor. These are great for changing tires/wheels on dually box trucks! I always carry a few different sizes of planking and a few chunks of 4 x 4 wood for bases in sand, mud, etc. Also cable tie the lever to the main shaft for storage, transport and get to Harbor Freight for at least 2 hard rubber chocks. Have a custom Hum Vee style rear swing away bumper on my Scout 2 with a locking mount for the jack, going to have the same on my current full size Bronco project

Got one of these for Christmas a few years ago. This video made my day.
Having grown up all my life on a farm around this style of jack, it never occurred to me that some people would need a tutorial on them haha funny how different your background can make you.
Another Great, educational video. Doing some offroading, me and my son, got stuck in a mudhole, tried digging, hammering wood under tires, nothing worked, lucky for us, someone came along and pulled us out. I will have to purchase this tool, jacking the truck up, and getting something under the tires for traction, would have worked.

Great video, Great tool. Growing up on a ranch around tractors we used them a lot. Never had the extra base but we used a board for extra stability in the mud or sand. I had one slip one time and my head was in that "triangle", split my cheek wide open enough to stick my tongue through! You definitely got to watch what your doing with them
Well done! We just bolted 3/4" or thicker plywood to the base of the jack, the factory wide base is too tall sometimes ( like when you really get it buried!). Also we pack (ed) pieces of carpet, chicken wire and board to jam under the wheels and/or jack. Good, useful knowledge as usual guys, carry on!

Great video, a hi-lift jack and ratcheting cable puller are two of the most useful tools that most people have never learn to use. Used both for everything from fencing to logging to axle pulling. This video is second only to the flat repair one from some time ago.
Good shit I bought a Ford raptor and a good friend of mine gave me a 4ft jack as a gift. I never thought to research how to use it so thanks for the vid possibly saved me embarrassment in the future

It would be great to show demos on various trucks and also ones that don't have step rail as shown on this video. I know most jacks that come with vehicles are suppose to be placed somewhere underneath.

What's old is NEW again!! I remember my grandfather's 67 Pontiac had a 3' bumper jack, (same concept pretty much) My dad used that and the jack from his '76 Chevelle Station Wagon to lift each end of our front porch and pour new, concrete footings...

Tactical rifleman the lift mate accessory or any strap can be used to lift the wheel, then block the axle itself on a stand before removing the hi lift to change a tire. Its a lot safer than relying on the hi lift to not fall over.

I was out on a backwoods camping trip in the Shenandoah when we got a Silverado 2500 stuck in a muddy, rutted road. Pulled out the hi-lift come-along trick and were laughin'. Easy day.

They are like a firearm - Heaps of extra capability but can be dangerous.
Another section (Squad) in our FOB tried to change the tyre on their 6x6 Land Rover. It (The Hi-lift jack) had been stored on the bumper open to the weather and was rusty. It jacked up and the tyre change was done but wouldn't go back down. Most were pretty unfamiliar with these jacks but correctly guessed I would have one at home. There was a rush due to operational requirements and too many people too eager to get things moving. Too many cooks spoilt the broth.
I gave instructions, and a guy hit the right part as instructed, but about five seconds too early. Aside from timing the jack did exactly what I intended. Due to the timing the handle flew up hitting my head. The result was five fractures to three different bones in my face and skull and a four month black eye (Including the eyeball). Amazingly, it didn't knock me out or knock me down. An unwanted early trip home to Australia. Plenty of titanium plates there now...
Like any great tool, great capability to be used with caution.
One of my favourite uses is on deeply rutted trails when the axles are stuck high and dry. Lift up the back of the vehicle as high as you safely can, then push it sideways causing the tyres to land on solid ground. The jack will jump out sideways so be mindful of the likely direction. Then do the other end of the vehicle, and drive off.

That lift is very handy especially with the attachments. I must say that toyota truck is sweet.
I've used these for years in farm ranch environment they can be dangerous to use. I've know people to be wacked in jaw with handle rebound and broken arms and hands. We once jacked a garage up to move with one.

Pro Tip: Drill holes in the corner of the pad so you can stake it down. Throw some 9" nails in the zipper bag.

Ah, the Hi-Lift Jack...some call them a Handyman Jack. I call them The Widowmaker. I grew up on a farm and have a few scars from using them. They're awesome! Keep them lubed up and they'll get you out of trouble.
I have used blood as lubrication on my high lift, works fine and is available in huge quantities wherever I come

Christian Sams It's tricky the first time you do it but it works well. Practice with it a little to make sure you have a good way to hook everything up. Some tasks are done best and safest with certain additional equipment.

I made me custom double sissor 5000lb hydrolic system.
I use a cordless drill or hand crank.
I have 34" of safe lifting and I carry 2 of these.
If need be I've rigged it to compress or expand to pull or push.
My next idea is to be able to free spin the screw without moving the sissors so I can run like a block and tackle idea using the hydrolic force for my extra winch rope.
But I'm not so smart so it might be a while.
From the days of my dad's 69 Chevy standing jack to my 60$ hi-lift I bought in the 90s I've just never had luck, to dangerous around groups of people and always ran the risk of slipping in bad conditions .
But I still like most of your vids thx.😃
The only potential safety issue I saw was with the first high lift jack when he demonstrated the transition from elevating to lowering. When he grips the crank handle to the locking bar his entire hand is in between the jack and the vehicle. I understand if it was conducted for demonstration purposes but I'd rather perform that measure with the back of my hand facing away from the vehicle with just my fingertips at risk for getting pinched between the vehicle and the jack as opposed to my whole hand.

When I lived in NH and VT I would off road with a samuri. Great 4X4, usually sandbags were enough for weight and traction on ice. I used a come-along only once to lure the nose out of a spot. I was wondering, if you are jacking on trail with a laden vehicle do you need to unburden or is the extra weight better for wheel bite? Also, Bill you are the only other dude I’ve seen with the optic fold on your hat brim. Choice.

Little tarp bag slip over the jack may discourage people not to steal it , out of sight out of mind . Any equipment always practice before you have that time you have to use it.
Put a wire brush in your bag and WD-40 and Rags for your hands and gloves
There are a number of really nice 4WD trucks and SUVs available outside the US that aren't imported here for a variety of reasons. Most of them have diesel engines that allow them to get much better fuel economy than the gas models sold here. Besides the Toyota vehicles, VW also made diesel 4WD trucks that weren't imported into the US. I had the opportunity to operate a nice Toyota Landcruiser diesel that came with a winch bumper and a twin set of radios for coms. It was a nice ride and far superior to my Suburban off road. Back in the US I contacted the local Toyota dealer with the model info and was told that unfortunately it wasn't importable into the US.

I would just use a mechanical bottle jack or a hydraulic bottle jack if a LandCruiser has any sort of suspension mods whatsoever you'll need to check the thing 3 feet in the air just to get the wheel off the ground I put in a Jack directly under the diff just a couple of Wines and you're up and safe I hate hi lift Jacks just a heads up
Can you not use ordinary jacks if you have hunks of wood to place the jack up higher?
Not really. The Hi-lift locks into the bumper and the ground. A standard Jack would only be balanced on the blocks of wood. Better than nothing, but still not safe
You might want to tell your viewers to tilt the base inwards towards the Truck by about 2 to 3 inches so the base is closer to the Truck than the top because once you start lifting the Vehicle these jacks always tilt forward which makes the vehicle slide/move and it can also crack the Base, But most important, "Do Not" drop the jack on the side where the up and down lever is because they Crack/Snap off very easily, I ordered the Hi-Lift Extreme and when it arrived all wrapped up in Bubble Wrap the Lever was snapped in half, That part is made out of cast and breaks very easily, So Be Warned,

I noticed you didn't even try to lift the cruiser up you would have to lift at 3 feet in the air and the wheels would still possibly be on the ground

You could have asked any farmer how these work. Used them often.
their is a new designed jack out now that is 10X better and the best is a winch w/land anchor.
There are few other options on the market for sure. The the high lift being the primary one used in the military made us want to focus the video on that specific type. Which one do you like?
ARB jack
David, assuming that you are talking about the ARB Hydraulic Jack... It fine and safer for straight lifts. However, it doesn't have the versatility of a hi-lift. Clamping & Spreading are two features that I thought I would never need, but have had to do 4 times in my last 5 years of Off-Road Driving. Again, I agree the ARB Hydraulic Jack is nice, but not better. Thanks for watching, TR

MexicanBagpiper96 Oboz...really good boots IMO....the ones I'm wearing are waterproof and the tread is great. Comfortable for all day wear too and still easy to move around in. I don't like tall boots much. Got these at REI.
Sweet, thanks. I got a pair of Merrells a while back, super comfortable, but they started falling apart rather quickly. I was looking for a replacement, so I was thinking either asolos or Salomon Forces, but then I saw yours and figure some more options wouldn't hurt.
